Presentation Abstract:

Climate Change Queensland Style

A geologist’s view of Climate Change using data mainly from Queensland and Australia.

Climate change has been in effect since the planet developed an atmosphere as by one definition, stratigraphy is but a record of  those climate change effects preserved in the sedimentary record. The talk will examine data connecting rising atmospheric CO2 with bushfires, local rainfall and temperature records, sea level rise, dust storm frequency and other related phenomena, and will examine how they can be misinterpreted. It will briefly explore aspects of the history of climate change in Eastern Australia as recorded in a sedimentary core from a crater lake in FNQ, and will show how such events, including changes in the Great Barrier Reef, are linked to global climate changes. Focus will then switch to fluctuations in atmospheric CO2, the effects on this record of ENSO type activity and the reasons for the surprisingly large inter-hemispheric variations in CO2 concentrations, fluxes and phase, and the validity of the claims that rising CO2 is leading to acidization of the oceans. It will conclude with a brief analysis of the contribution of human CO2 emissions in this story.

Tickets for the Technical Luncheon can be purchased below.
