PESA NSW December 2019 Christmas Party

Tuesday, 10 December, 2019 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm (Australia/Sydney time)

$20.00 – $70.00

Guest Speaker(s): Max Williamson

Max is an unusual Chartered Accountant type in that he loves resources with over 40 years hands on experience, tries to understand science and has his own way of thinking on anything to do with how resources will fit into the Australian way of life over the next ten to twenty years. Max has been involved with PESA NSW for over 30 years, been Federal President and Treasurer, NSW President and Branch Councillor for around 20 years and is a Distinguished Member of PESA. His interest in electric vehicles grew from his underground exploits with haulpaks and his trips to Europe where there are so many hybrid cars. This interest has today festered into a continuous questioning over the place of electric vehicles in the world markets and more particularly in the Australian market.

PESA NSW Christmas Technical Meeting Tuesday 10th December 2019

Electric vehicles, the resources industry and us

Talk Description:

One cannot look at electric vehicles without addressing their underlying key technology meaning electricity generation and storage. Electric vehicles themselves have their own design features and manufacturing quirks that are unique to their power source, each of which impact performance and running distance.

In 30 minutes we are going to run through:

The likely size of the electric cars market overseas and in Australia over the next five years, then ten years and post. Each will have its own particular matters of relevance;

Technical aspects of electric cars compared to combustion engine vehicles;

Contents of batteries and their alternatives;

Aspects of charging cars at home, on the road and in office blocks. The various connectors, council restrictions and the differences between charging times all being very important;

The source of the electricity is equally important as the usage, so how enough power can be sourced and its impact on power stations and regional grids like local substations and building power-boards will become critical;

Costs of power, commodity pricing and the available vehicles will be indicative, albeit at best approximate.

A final assessment will be if you were going to but a SUV, car, ute, station wagon or workhorse in the next few months, what would you buy and what are going to be your key indicators for that decision.

Questions will be welcome.
