SUMMARY:PESA SA/NT March Luncheon- Hydrogen Gas Storage Prospects in South Australian Petroleum Basins
DESCRIPTION:Hydrogen Gas Storage Prospects in South Australian Petroleum Basins\nMarch Bunch\,University of Adelaide \n  \nAbstract\n\nSouth Australia hosts two petroleum production basins that are also expected to play a role in Geological Carbon Sequestration (GCS).  Each hosts CO2 disposal operations at differing scales.  Previous studies have demonstrated sealing capacities bounding structural closures to viable reservoir beneath the threshold depth for sustaining supercritical CO2 sufficient to accommodate millions of tonnes of CO2 annually.  Another prospective use for these reservoir systems has emerged: Underground Hydrogen Storage (UHS).  UHS will provide a secure\, scalable way to accommodate excess hydrogen production and fill temporary supply shortfall\, thereby stabilising the price of energy as the transition unfolds.  Hydrogen is a gas under all viable subsurface conditions so is invasive\, mobile and of low mass density.  Sealing capacity to hydrogen gas is approximately equivalent to that of methane meaning closures to natural gas fields should be viable for temporary hydrogen storage.  However\, there are other considerations such as how prone a containment system would be to hydrogen losses by degraded integrity under injection-production stress\, dissolution\, chemical reactions or microbial consumption.  This study evaluates viable UHS fairways within each basin at the helicopter-view scale.  The following factors are considered: hydrodynamic modification of closure; sealing unit thickness and capacity; a threshold depth that is both as shallow as possible but deep enough to limit microbial hydrogen consumption whilst ensuring a competitive hydrogen mass density.  When these factors are considered together\, the most prospective fairways are revealed that correspond with a subset of known petroleum field closures to proven reservoir intervals. \n\n  \n  \nEvent Details:\nThursday\,  March 21st\, 2024\nLuncheon: 12 pm for a 12:30 pm start \nPlace: Ayer’s House\, 288 North Tce\, Adelaide \nIncludes a 2-course lunch and drinks \nBookings close 1 pm Monday\, 18th March 2024 \nAny late bookings will incur an additional $20 fee. Strictly no walk-ins.

SUMMARY:PESA WA March 21st Evening Talk: Perth Basin Technical Evening Event
DESCRIPTION:PESA WA invites you to a Perth Basin technical Evening Event Tuesday 21st March.\nL7 / EP 437 – Pushing the (Allanooka) Boundary – how far North is far enough?\nPresented by Mike Collins (NED Triangle Energy) \nThe onshore Perth basin (south of the Allanooka Fault) has been the focus of some significant successful exploration drilling and appraisal since the serendipitous discovery of Waitsia in 2014. Since then\, a whole tranche of further discoveries at Beharra Springs Deep\, West Erregulla\, Lockyer Deep\, South Erregulla\, North Erregulla Deep\, Trigg NW and Tarantula Deep have proven the extent of the Permian Kingia Fm play. \nFollowing Triangle’s acquisition of the Bookara 3D seismic over the L7 and EP 437 permits in 2022 and with the application of the latest interpretative software in relation to reservoir and structural analysis\, Triangle Energy is about to embark on an exciting drilling campaign (north of the Allanooka Fault). \nIt has been over 30 years since any wells have been drilled in the L7 acreage area. Triangle’s upcoming exploration drilling campaign aims to extend the prospective northern boundary of the Permian Kingia Fm gas play whilst at the same time “rediscovering” areas of known oil propspectivity. \nThis talk will take you on the journey to date………….. \nDiversification is the only free lunch.\nPresented by Stuart Nicholls (Strike Energy) \nThis is the notion that holding a broader range of assets can result in better returns without assuming more risk. Whilst completely exposed to the WA gas and energy markets and constrained to the Perth Basin\, Strike’s acreage is actually heavily diversified across two completely independent play types in the Permian (north) and the Jurassic (south) which have unique characteristics\, challenges\, and benefits. Stuart will go through these plays and how Strike is approaching project development and capital allocation using its geological diversity to drive shareholder returns. \n  \nTimings for the event: \nDate: Thursday 21st March\, 2024 \nVenue: Parmelia Hilton\, Mill St\, Perth \nTime: 6pm – 8pm (Perth time) \n  \n\nPESA Members:                                $25.00 (PESA Members must Log on to the PESA website to purchase) \nNon-members:                                 $50.00 \nPESA Students Members:              Free (registration is essential)

SUMMARY:PESA Sedimentology and Stratigraphy Interest Group (SSIG) Meeting - March 2024
DESCRIPTION:PESA Sedimentology and Stratigraphy Interest Group meeting \n22nd of March\, 1 – 4pm Carlisle Core Library\n4pm Balmoral Hotel\, Victoria Park\nCores from the Mungaroo\nThe Mungaroo Formation gas reserves have underpinned the WA gas export industry for decades and will for many more. The Mungaroo Formation is a Norian mega delta grading from fluvial to delta front both vertically and laterally. Depofacies include fluvial channel fill\, distributary channel fill\, paleosols\, crevasse splays\, flood plain lacustrine\, mouth bar\, interdistributary bay\, shoreface\, delta front and offshore transition. Cores have been chosen to cover the early TR20 through to TR27 inboard at Goodwyn to display the vertical variability in the system and the outboard system displayed in Kentish Knock-1. Come and review the facies variations\, the diagenetic variability and the controls on production that are evident in the core. See if you can identify the climatic indicators in this system as well. \nCores cover vertical age distribution for vertical variability plus an outboard distal core for lateral variation: \n\nGoodwyn-5\,\nGooodwyn-6\,\nYodel-2\,\nKentish Knock-1\n\nOrganisers: Rob Seggie and Darren Ferdinando \nAs is tradition\, the SSIG workshop will be followed by drinks at 4.00 pm at the Balmoral Hotel\, Victoria Park.  PESA supplies nibbles\, but drinks are at your own expense. \nHard limit of 35 attendees and every previous SSIG meeting has been fully booked out.  \n  \nCost:  \nMember:  $10 \nStudent members:  Free \n  \nRegistrations close Thursday 21st March at 5pm. \nThis event is for members only. This is for insurance purposes. Please do not book on behalf of non-members. Please do not attend if you do not have a ticket. \nIf there are any questions please don’t hesitate to contact your host:  Rob Seggie (seggiegeoscience@gmail.com)
