These dipping stratal surfaces are ubiquitous in the stratigraphic record but often ignored with regard to their potential significant influence on fluid flow in the subsurface. Whether you are interested in hydrocarbon or groundwater extraction\, carbon sequestration\, or sediment hosted uranium\, you need to know if you are dealing with clinoforms. Clinoforms can have significant impacts on resource recovery and emplacement. Ignoring them or simply not recognising them can have profound (usually) negative impacts on project value. Key to making clinoforms your best friend are three steps; 1) recognition\, 2) uncertainty management\, and 3) targetted modelling. DESCRIPTION:PESA SA/NT April Luncheon\nJoint meeting with ASEG SA-NT\nCooper Basin – seismic processing & where it leads …\nPeter Strauss\n  \nAbstract:\nProcessing and interpretation work on the Western Flank of the Cooper Basin indicate that modern land 3D seismic datasets are often not fit-for-purpose when targeting smaller-scale structures. One of the primary objective in this region\, the Namur horizon\, is typically a strong and easily identifiable seismic event. Exploration success therefore depends less on horizon picking and more on accurately positioning wells on genuine structural highs. However\, deeper targets beneath the Namur present greater challenges. In these intervals\, seismic events are often discontinuous and geologically inconsistent\, making both structural interpretation and imaging problematic. \nThis talk highlights two key issues: \nThe structural problem is not new—it was identified in 2D seismic data approximately 30 years ago\, where structural “corrections” were applied. These corrections have not been consistently carried through into modern 3D datasets.\nImaging quality in onshore seismic data is being compromised by the application of processing workflows originally developed for marine 3D seismic. These methods are poorly suited to land data\, where targets are significantly smaller and geological complexity is higher. DESCRIPTION:PESA SA/NT May Luncheon\n“Update on Gold Hydrogen’s drilling on the Yorke Peninsula”\n Peter Bubendorfer\nGold Hydrogen\n  \nAbstract:\nGold Hydrogen was started by its founders in 2021 with applications lodged over historic hydrogen shows on Yorke Peninsula and Kangaroo Island. Applications were also lodged over areas of the Adelaide Geosyncline and Murray Basin as well as blocks on the Gawler Craton south of Whyalla. The company listed on the ASX in early 2023 and following the grant of PEL 687 has been a very active pioneering explorer. After flying airborne gravity and magnetics\, in 2023 the company twinned the original Ramsay Oil Bore hydrogen show with Ramsay 1 and 2\, intersecting up to 96% hydrogen and 37% helium\, some of the highest purities ever seen in underground wells. Post drilling\, a 2D seismic survey was carried out and at the end of 2025 two further wells were drilled which confirmed continuity of reservoir. While the largest gas fields in the Cooper Basin were found early\, this pattern does not hold for oil in the Eromanga Basin. The Western Flank oil discoveries followed the entry of new operators and new licences. Despite the basins’ maturity\, some areas remain underexplored\, for example\, the Nappamerri Trough has no dedicated oil wells despite being similar in size to the Western Flank. WHY DIDN’T ANYONE\nTELL ME!?\nled by David Grybowski\n  \nSunday 19th July 2026\n9am to ~3pm\n(Rescheduled from May 24th)\n\nFrustrated driving through the Adelaide Hills and still not understanding the Geology?\nThis excursion will familiarize participants with the geological formations\, folds and faults of the Adelaide Hills by orientating the outcrop and faults with the road network and geomorphology. DESCRIPTION:PESA SA/NT Workshop\n\nInterpreting Three-Dimensional Fluvial and Shoreline Architecture from Core\, Depositional Analogues\, and Forward Stratigraphic Models\n  \nThrough a combination of lectures and hands-on examination of selected Permian and Mesozoic cores\, this workshop will cover: \n•            Using hierarchical frameworks to address geological questions at the appropriate architectural scale. \n•            Identifying depositional environments in core\, with a primary focus on active depositional processes. \n•            Examining typical 3D architectures in shallow marine and fluvial environments under different process regimes and their impact on subsurface fluid flow. \n•            Leveraging depositional analogues\, 3D conceptual models\, and realistic forward stratigraphic models to improve subsurface architectural predictions. \nLearning Outcomes: \n•            Gain practical experience using physical structures and ichnology to interpret local depositional environments within cores. \n•            Improve your understanding of the three-dimensional aspects of depositional systems through extensive analogue databases\, 3D conceptual models\, and forward stratigraphic models. \n•            Gain insight into how these tools can improve inter-well predictions while accounting for appropriate levels of depositional uncertainty. \nWho Should Attend: Exploration and development geologists\, petrophysicists\, reservoir engineers\, academics\, and geoscience students. \nAnalogue Database Access: All participants will be granted complimentary access to the Sedbase web-based platform for the duration of the workshop. \nCost: $250 for members\, $350* for non-members and $50 for students. \nLocation: The South Australia Drill Core Reference Library is located at 5 Tonsley Boulevard\, Clovelly Park SA 5042. SUMMARY:Constrained by Geology: Reducing Sub-Seismic Uncertainty with Depositional Analogues and Synthetic Data
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: Boyan Vakarelov (Founder SEDBASE) \nAbstract: Many critical subsurface decisions depend on predicting fluid flow through stratigraphic architectures that occur below typical seismic resolution\, or in areas with sparse well control. This sub-seismic uncertainty can be meaningfully reduced through following a geology-first approach\, where depositional variability is constrained by process understanding and calibrated against natural analogues. Such an approach should embrace multiple geologically valid solutions and focus on the architectural scale most relevant to the decision at hand. \nThis presentation draws on insights from an extensive depositional analogue database compiled over the past two decades\, highlighting how process regime and system type control the architecture of shallow marine and fluvial successions. We will then demonstrate how forward stratigraphic and object-based modelling workflows can generate geologically realistic scenarios in data-limited settings. DESCRIPTION:PESA SA/NT August Luncheon\n“Petroleum geoscience and the energy transition: \na personal historical perspective and predictions for the future”\nDr Peter Moore\n\n  \nAbstract:\nThe petroleum industry was technologically advanced by the mid 1900s\, but a number of developments over the last half century stand out in the areas of seismic\, sequence stratigraphy\, assessment technologies\, deepwater plays\, drilling\, offshore developments\, CSG and shale\, which will be discussed\, including from a personal perspective. These developments have served to maintain the competitiveness of the petroleum industry and have satisfied an increasing demand over time. \nHowever\, a key question for the industry is its future role in the evolving energy transition. Analysis is difficult because there are multiple competing narratives and strong vested interests. \nToday we sit at a pivot point\, with a growing divergence of possible energy futures\, depending on how the world balances economic growth\, energy poverty\, geopolitics\, and great power competition against emissions reduction\, fossil fuel elimination and climate change concerns. \nIn the decade since the Paris agreement and despite significant progress\, the 1.5oC goal is lost and fossil fuel’s contribution to energy consumption remains at 80%. \nWhile both sides (fossil fuel supporters and renewable proponents) argue their case\, the next 15 years at least is becoming clearer – a US/China energy and manufacturing divide\, huge growth of renewables but matched by overall energy growth\, the emergence of nuclear\, and the persistence of petroleum\, especially gas. \nDespite trillions of dollars spent on the energy transition\, we have underestimated the difficulty in speedily transitioning the world’s energy and industrial infrastructure\, and have underestimated global growth\, including overall energy consumption. This can be seen by comparing predictions and model outcomes published over the last decade. \nFor today’s petroleum geoscientists\, technology and jobs will continue to evolve while new areas are likely to include advanced geothermal\, CCS\, and potentially natural hydrogen. DESCRIPTION:PESA SA/NT October Luncheon\n“Geological CO₂ Storage: Familiar Subsurface\, Different Questions”\nDr. Katherine Romanak\nThe University of Texas at Austin’s Bureau of Economic Geology \n  \nAbstract \nGeological CO₂ Storage: Familiar Subsurface\, Different Questions \nPetroleum geoscientists come to CO₂ storage with a powerful advantage: the rocks\, wells\, fluids and subsurface tools are familiar. But CCS can change the meaning of familiar observations—and sometimes reverse the questions we are accustomed to asking. Injection is not simply production done backwards. When is migration expected\, and when is it a containment concern? Does movement outside a predicted plume represent failure? Can there be environmental impact without CO₂ leakage? And when does a storage issue become a reportable emission? This presentation will explore where petroleum experience transfers directly to geological CO₂ storage and where familiar concepts need to be reconsidered. Drawing on examples from storage projects\, monitoring research\, and controlled-release experiments\, it will distinguish three objectives that are often unintentionally conflated: demonstrating containment\, protecting the environment\, and accounting for emissions. The central argument is simple: before deciding what to monitor\, we must first be clear about the question the monitoring is meant to answer.
