SUMMARY:2023 PESA WEBINAR SERIES: CCS Knowledge Transfer Series: Installment 1
DESCRIPTION:  \nETSIG/CSIRO CCS Knowledge Transfer Series: Installment 1 \nThe PESA Energy Transition Special Interest Group (ETSIG)\, in conjunction with CSIRO\, is running the “CCS Knowledge Transfer Series” which aims to cover geological and geophysical aspects of CCS\, focusing on the differences from oil and gas operations. \nFurther information about the series can be found here: \nhttps://pesa.com.au/events/etsig-csiro-ccs-knowledge-transfer-series/2023-09-05/ \n  \nKindly supported by: \n \n  \nThis live webinar will take place at: \n11am              – Perth \n12.30pm       – Darwin\, Adelaide \n1pm                – Brisbane\, Canberra\, Hobart\, Melbourne\, Sydney \n  \nUse the calendar link on this page to add this event in to your own calendar at the correct local time for your location. \nTickets are free for PESA members (please log in to see this)\, free for members of the AGA\, SPE\, AAPG (Asia-Pacific) and the EAGE (Asia-Pacific).  Tickets for non-members are $10. \nPlease buy your tickets and immediately follow the link in the ticket e-mail (not the calendar invite or this webpage\, which is just generic and not event specific) to set up your registration with the webinar software well in advance of the time of the talk. Once registered with the webinar software you will receive a reminder e-mail 1 hour beforehand. \n  \n  \nCCS Knowledge Transfer Series: Installment 1 \n  \nWelcome to the CCS Knowledge Transfer Series – ETSIG \nIntroduction to the CCS Knowledge Transfer Series – Themes\, Framing Remarks and the Challenges of CCS – Charles Jenkins (CSIRO) \nCCS\, and its cousins CCUS\, BECCS and DAC are all aspects of the same technology and are becoming increasingly vital to control and reverse atmospheric concentrations of CO2. While CCS “looks like” a familiar oil and gas operation\, the rationale\, business case\, regulation and social license environment are very different. While these differences are crucial\, there are many less obvious but equally important technical differences in how CCS is implemented\, compared to the oil and gas paradigm. This course of seminars will explore what’s different about CCS. \nSite Selection and Characterisation – What’s Different About CCS? – Tess Dance (CSIRO) \nAbstract \n\nThe goal for carbon dioxide storage site selection and characterisation is to find a suitable location where an effective reservoir exists\, matched to a CO2 source in both volume and injection rate. To ensure the CO2 is safely contained\, the relative contribution of key trapping mechanisms need to be defined\, thus reducing adverse risks to natural resources or the community. In Australia\, the framework for offshore CO2 storage has been adapted from petroleum legislation. The tools\, processes\, and methodologies also mirror those developed in the search for oil and gas\, and one might think it’s simpler since factors like establishing there has been sufficient charge can be bypassed. Indeed\, to avert conflicts over resources\, locations where hydrocarbons are less likely to be found are preferred. However\, this preference leads to a quandary: how do we ascertain storage potential in areas lacking prior exploration data? Given this situation\, many assume that depleted fields are attractive options\, with minimal risk and uncertainty due to their history of retaining hydrocarbons and the extensive characterization by prior operators. But these sites bring their own unique set of challenges. In this first talk of the series we will introduce screening criteria required to find prospective CCS sites and some Australian examples where we show “what’s different about CCS”? \nSpeaker Biography \nDr Tess Dance has a PhD from the University of Adelaide in Petroleum Geoscience\, and over twenty years of experience in basin analysis and reservoir characterisation for geological storage of Carbon Dioxide. Dr Dance is the author of numerous high impact publications in the field of CO2 geological storage\, monitoring and verification\, and has specialised knowledge of sedimentology\, sequence stratigraphy and geological depositional environmental analysis. In her role as geo-modeller for the CO2CRC Otway Project\, she has been involved in well planning\, core logging\, data analysis\, seismic interpretation\, modelling\, and simulation for Australia’s first CCS demonstration pilot site. She currently leads the Reservoir Simulation team in CSIRO Energy Resources.

Once registered with the webinar software you will receive a reminder e-mail 1 hour beforehand. \nOptimizing Data-Driven Resource Exploration: Unveiling the Power of the LithoSurfer Data Platform \nPresented by Fabian Kohlmann (Lithodat) \nAbstract \n\nWell managed\, standardised data is vital for the resource industry as it currently undergoes an intense digitalisation phase. As most available geoscientific datasets are regionally bound and have bespoke implementations\, it is challenging to merge all data into a consistent global framework.  Lithodat’s vision is to provide explorationists with global geoscientific databases and analytics to decrease the time taken to gain professional exploration insights to simplify and de-risk resource discoveries. LithoSurfer\, Lithodat’s unique browser-based exploration data platform offers the most detailed global\, standardised geochemistry and the largest thermochronology data repository and digital analytical tools available. Very detailed analytical data and advanced analytical tools including integrated paleogeographic reconstruction functionality of all metadata\, on-the-fly dashboards and automated heatmap integration\, enables the user to query and visualise data through deep-time and easily access and download all available data. No matter if you are looking for detailed geochemistry functionality for on-the-fly analysis of Li in brines or a tool to quickly test maturity or advanced source to sink investigations\, LithoSurfer provides you with the perfect platform to do so. It’s simple and easy to understand user interface makes all those tools easy to understand and use for every level. \nLithoSurfer is a secure online data platform for storing\, viewing\, analysing and extracting data in a geological and geospatial context. LithoSurfer provides quick access to a wealth of information (analytical details including all metadata\, machine parameters\, lab information\, persons involved\, references etc.) across multiple analytical techniques and localities. LithoSurfer harvests its power from being built on a unique relational database with a modular architecture of very fine-grained data models for each data type. Lithodat’s team of experts together with our partner institutions extract\, validate\, standardise and integrate all publicly available analytical data into our cloud-hosted database. Proprietary data can be securely integrated and normalised into LithoSurfer and analysed together with all public data. This consolidation opens up the full potential that spatial geoscience data has to offer and is a vast improvement on storing data in separate spreadsheets and folders as often happens within teams and exploration projects. LithoSurfer makes dispersed and complicated geoscience datasets understandable and usable for any explorationist. \nHaving data and analytical tools at your fingertips for systems such as geochronology\, thermochronology\, inorganic and organic geochemistry\, vitrinite reflectance and thermal histories helps increase exploration insights and workflow efficiency. However\, LithoSurfer does not constrain the explorationist to its tools\, clean and standardised data can be extracted in multiple formats to take full advantage of new techniques such as machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) and LithoSurfer also offers a secure REST API to connect directly to other software if required.

SUMMARY:PESA ACT/NSW September Technical Lunch
DESCRIPTION:Tony Allan – The Darai Limestone\, T-Letter stages and strontium with everything: exploration stratigraphy in the Papuan Basin\, a lab and field perspective.\nNotice: Date change to Tuesday 19th September \nThe Oligo-Miocene Darai Limestone crops out over much of the Papuan Fold Belt in the western Papuan Basin\, so its stratigraphy is critical in developing structural models to target Mesozoic reservoirs. Since its first application in the Muller Range in 1990 by Mobil\, strontium (Sr) dating has been used extensively throughout the Papuan Fold to map the base Darai surface. Most of the isotopic analysis was done at the CSIRO labs in Sydney\, in conjunction with petrographic study of limestones as a QC on Sr ages. Without name-dropping too many species\, the talk will outline how the petrographic and field research revitalised the conventional “T-Letter” foram biostratigraphy and Darai microfacies stratigraphy through its calibation to the Sr data. This has been a close collaborative effort with many exploration companies – so some industry geologists might be named. \nExploration for Tertiary limestone reservoirs in the eastern Papuan Basin was revived by InterOil in the early 2000s\, resulting in the 2009 Antelope gas discovery in a Miocene “reef”. By contrast with the Darai “platform”\, in the east sedimentation in a more rifted margin is reflected in the Tertiary sequence; with localised shallow carbonate deposition contiguous with deeper water carbonate and clastic sedimentation\, and the tectonic overprint from the middle Miocene of foreland  Aure  volcanigenic sediments. Within this setting the stratigraphic record of marker forams (& other calacreous microfssils) is complicated by geological factors including reworking and condensation/non-deposition. As a result\, the “noise free” T-Letter scheme and broader microfacies sequence in the Darai has been important to the exploration search for carbonate reservoirs in the east. \nThis account will touch on lessons relevant to ongoing exploration; (1) some findings on Sr age anomalies and their geological and diagenetic causes that have emerged\, particularly in the search for “reef reservoirs in the eastern Papuan basin\, and (2) potential to refine Tertiary sedimentaion models with the large basinwide petrographic and Sr dataset that captures time-facies information. And some concluding remarks on the Darai exploration legacy for current and future Tertiary basin research on the Australian Margin.

SUMMARY:PESA WA September Evening talk: Casting a Bigger Shadow: Big New Opportunities in Australian Basins revealed by Regional Fluid Inclusion Data
DESCRIPTION:Casting a Bigger Shadow: Big new opportunities in Australian Basins revealed by regional fluid inclusion data\n \nEnhanced hydrocarbon exploration\, Reduced development risk\, Improved geological storage of CO2 \n\nMark Lisk (Ascendience Geoscience) \n\n\nAustralia boasts the largest resource of fluid inclusion data in the world\, with more than 800 wells\,\nleading the way in application by the oil and gas industry. For exploration\, where constraining the\ntiming\, origin and phases of fluid migration is crucial\, the contribution to improved understanding of\nprocesses that produce\, alter\, or destroy hydrocarbon systems has been profound. These data\nrevolutionise the mitigation of risk in modern petroleum systems analysis\, improve understanding of\nproven systems for better appraisal and development planning and reveal pathfinders to new\npetroleum systems that will yield future discoveries. \nIn field development these data are especially valuable\, predicting down-dip oil rims in gas fields\,\noffering constraint on reservoir quality\, and by constraining water saturation in fields where formation\nwater samples are contaminated these unique data augment conventional measurements and yield\nsuperior control on the accuracy of field reserve calculations. \nAs geological storage of CO2 emerges as a vital climate mitigation strategy fluid inclusion data provides\ncrucial insights for effective screening of storage sites. From demonstrating the absence of viable\npetroleum systems to avoid contamination of yet to find petroleum resources to constraining the\nthermal conditions in wells with poor or no data and providing crucial constraint on the nature of\naquifer systems especially for migration assisted storage sites where salinity looms as a critical\, but\npoorly constrained\, factor. \nThis whistle stop tour examines a diverse range of Australian Basins and beyond to demonstrate the\nutility of these methods\, highlight areas where application directly contributed to discoveries or an\nimproved understanding of existing oil and gas fields and reveal those areas with good potential for\nfuture discoveries. Early application to identifying suitable sites for the geological storage of CO2 will\nalso be discussed where fluid inclusions can literally help to save the world! \n\nEvent Sponsors: \n \nThursday 21st September 6pm (for talk starting at 6.45pm)\, The Shoe Bar (Yagan Square) \nCost: \nPESA Members:                                $25.00 (Members must Log on to the PESA website to see the member prices) \nNon-members:                                 $50.00 \nPESA Students Members:               Free (registration is essential) \nBookings close Wednesday 20th September at 12 noon for venue and catering purposes.

SUMMARY:PESA SA/NT September Technical Luncheon "Cretaceous depositional environment interpretation of offshore Otway Basin cores and wireline logs"
DESCRIPTION:Cretaceous depositional environment interpretation of offshore Otway Basin cores and wireline logs; application to the generation of basin-scale gross depositional environment maps\nPresented by: Chris Cubitt\nDeputy Director Geoscience & Exploration \nGeoscience and Exploration Branch | Energy Resources Division – DEM \nChris.Cubitt@sa.gov.au \n  \n  \nAbstract\n\nGas production from the Inner Otway Basin commenced in the early 2000s but the deep-water part of this basin remains an exploration frontier. Historically\, the understanding of plays in this region were largely model driven and therefore the ground-truthing of depositional environments (DE) and gross depositional environments (GDE) are critical. This aspect has been investigated for the Sherbrook Supersequence (SS) by the integration of legacy wireline and core data\, with regional 2D seismic facies mapping of new and reprocessed data from Geoscience Australia’s 2020 Otway Basin seismic program. Core observations were matched to wireline logs and seismic facies with resulting well based DE interpretations calibrated to seismic resolution Regional GDE intervals. Integration of well and seismic observations lead to the compilation of a basin-wide Regional GDE map for the Sherbrook SS. This GDE map indicates the distribution of Sherbrook SS play elements such as source rock\, seal and reservoir\, especially across the Deep Water Otway Basin where well data is sparse. \n\n\nEvent Details:\nThursday\,  September 28th\, 2023\nLuncheon: 12 pm for a 12:30 pm start \nPlace: Ayer’s House\, 288 North Tce\, Adelaide \nIncludes a 2-course lunch and drinks \nBookings close 1 pm Monday\, 25th August\nAny late bookings will incur an additional $20 fee. SUMMARY:PESA ACT/NSW October Technical Lunch
DESCRIPTION:Seismic in the 60s\nTwo clapped out vessels\nOne drunken skipper\n100 ton of Nitramon \nAn explosive combination!\nPlus Discussion Forum: The future of the PESA NSW Branch\nPlease complete the membership survey by clicking here \nSummary:\nSet in the early days of marine seismic in Australia\, December 1966 to February 1967 \nI spent 3 months as a summer student. It was a 2 boat survey – both clapped out coastal freighters MV Merino and MV Paul Markson. \nAn incident filled trip. \nBallasting the kerosene filled streamer with lead and gaffer tape at midnight on a pitching deck 30ft above the water with no rails whatsoever (OHS was an unknown acronym). Deck awash with kero which rotted all our footwear (and feet). \nSkipper was a drunk\, Party Chief was an idiot. \n8500 foot streamer cut in half by a freighter because the skipper couldn’t signal properly with his Aldis lamp (he could hardly hold it!). \nStreamer sections blown up because the shooting boat couldn’t keep position. \nStreamer sections bitten by sharks. \nSpanish deckhand almost dead from carbon tetrachloride poisoning because he couldn’t tell anyone what was wrong. \nDrunk found down in the hull complete with wine flagon just before we headed to sea. \nHeading back to Portland in a Force 10 gale knowing that the Sedco 135G had slipped its tow and was somewhere out in front of us. \nAnd to cap it all\, we found that 50% of our powder (about 25 tons) would sometimes not explode so it was jettisoned overboard – 1\,000 yellow canisters bobbing off into the Tasman Sea.

To understand fluid flow\, pressure must be expressed as over-pressure variation\, the variation in potential\, equating to over-pressure above hydrostatic gradient or head (the height a water column would rise above MSL in a pipe intersecting the point of measurement).  Variation in fluid potential within the aquifer beneath a hydrocarbon field results in a variation in FWL over a field (tilted or stepped contacts).  This is not evident in most fields due to the small size of fields relative to the small variations in potential which are routinely interpreted as measurement error.  However\, when the variation is higher\nthese tilts or steps can be very significant\, due to: \n\nLarge field areas\nFaults causing baffling\nLower permeabilities\nHigher water flows\nHigh density hydrocarbons where minor variation in potential causes\nsignificant tilting.\n\nIn this talk concepts such as overpressure\, potentiometric maps and sections and compartmentalised reservoirs are discussed.  Examples from all over the world are presented along with the impact on failed exploration wells and sub-optimum development plans.  Vertical variation in potential within fields is also discussed. Finally\, publicly available pressure data from the Perth Basin is reviewed and discussed to consider whether Perth Basin Fields are compartmentalised\, or have complexly stepped contacts. \nEvent Sponsors: \n  \nTicket Prices: \nMember (Early Bird): $69.00 \nConcession Member [Retired\, Graduate or Hardship] (Early Bird): $59.00 \nStudent Member (Early Bird): $39.00 \nNon-Member: $99.00 \nMember (Non-Early Bird): $79.00 \nEarly bird pricing ends Thursday (1 week prior) at 5pm (AWST). All ticket sales close at 5pm Tuesday (2 days prior). \n

SUMMARY:PESA SA/NT October Technical Luncheon The CO2 Storage Resources Management System
DESCRIPTION:The CO2 Storage Resources Management System (SRMS): what it is and how it was applied at Moomba\nJohn Kaldi\nEmeritus Professor & CO2CRC Distinguished Scientist\nUniversity of Adelaide \nPaul Lyford\nReserves & Resources Manager\nSantos Limited \n  \nAbstract\n\nThis talk aims to create awareness of the recently published Guidelines for Applications of the CO2 Storage Resources Management System (SRMS). The SRMS was first published in 2017 and is now sponsored by the world’s foremost industry-focused professional societies\, including SPE\, AAPG\, SEG\, SPWLA\, EAGE\, SPEE and WPC. The Guidelines were released in June 2022 and are available from the SPE bookstore. Although a voluntary system\, the intent is that regulators\, government departments\, and financiers will be able to draw upon the experience of managing petroleum resources to advise on the management of carbon dioxide storage resources. \nThe SRMS is modelled on the Petroleum Resource Management System (PRMS). This was a deliberate choice aimed at making the development of storage resources clearer by drawing parallels with the well-known and well-understood process of maturing petroleum resources. The need to show that injected CO2 can be contained in a geologic formation is the key difference between exploring for CO2 storage resources and exploring for petroleum accumulations. \nAccording to the SRMS\, a CO2 storage resource is defined as the quantity (mass or volume) of CO2 that can be stored in a geologic formation. This storage can be in geologic structures (e.g.\, an anticline) or in regionally extensive dipping geologic formations. The storage mechanisms are geologic (structural and stratigraphic)\, residual\, solubility\, and mineral trapping\, and an inherent consideration in any storage resources is that displaced fluids (e.g.\, brine or hydrocarbons) are managed. \nA significant case study from Santos’ Moomba CCS project in the Cooper Basin is provided to demonstrate incorporation of SRMS in storage resource assessments. The Moomba project is the world’s first commercial CCS project to incorporate the SRMS system and to include the CO2 resource in a company’s annual report.   As more experience is gained through the development of commercial projects such as Moomba\, the SRMS and Guidelines undoubtedly will be updated. \n  \n\nEvent Details:\nThursday\,  October 26th\, 2023\nLuncheon: 12 pm for a 12:30 pm start \nPlace: Ayer’s House\, 288 North Tce\, Adelaide \nIncludes a 2-course lunch and drinks \nBookings close 1 pm Monday\, 23rd August\nAny late bookings will incur an additional $20 fee. SUMMARY:PESA ETSIG/CSIRO CCS Knowledge Transfer Series: Installment 3
DESCRIPTION:PESA ETSIG/CSIRO CCS Knowledge Transfer Series: Installment 3 \nThe PESA Energy Transition Special Interest Group (ETSIG)\, in conjunction with CSIRO\, is running the “CCS Knowledge Transfer Series” which aims to cover geological and geophysical aspects of CCS\, focusing on the differences from oil and gas operations. \nFurther information about the series can be found here: \nhttps://pesa.com.au/events/etsig-csiro-ccs-knowledge-transfer-series/2023-09-05/ \n  \nKindly supported by: \n \n  \nThis live webinar will take place at: \n11am              – Perth\n12.30pm       – Darwin\n1pm                – Brisbane\n1:30pm          – Adelaide\n2pm                – Canberra\, Hobart\, Melbourne\, Sydney \n  \nUse the calendar link on this page to add this event in to your own calendar at the correct local time for your location. \nTickets are free for PESA members (please log in to see this)\, free for members of the AGA\, SPE\, AAPG (Asia-Pacific) and the EAGE (Asia-Pacific).  Tickets for non-members are $10 per episode. \n  \n  \nCCS Knowledge Transfer Series: Installment 3 \nReservoir Engineering and Simulation for CCS – Jonathan Ennis-King (CSIRO) \nAbstract \n\nThe practice of reservoir engineering and simulation in CCS begins with the standard physics of multiphase flow in porous media\, but with CO2-specific properties to be represented\, especially the solubility of CO2 in brine and the matching changes in brine density\, and relative permeability effects. Four major code comparison studies have been carried out over the last twenty years\, mostly to cross-validate simulator performance (of both people and software)\, as well as the most recent comparison with laboratory experiments. \nThe questions addressed by CCS simulation are quite distinct from most hydrocarbon recovery work: one is modelling large volumes of CO2 injection (millions of tonnes) into saline formations\, where the resulting CO2 plume migrates laterally over distances of kilometres\, and in timeframes of up to a thousand years after injection ceases. Feasibility studies need to address the range of uncertainties in the plume footprint\, which stem from the uncertainties in geological characterisation of surface topography\, sub-seismic faults\, and permeability heterogeneity both laterally and vertically. The pressures increase due to injection may necessitate the design of relief wells. Simulations are needed to design monitoring and verification plans\, and to interpret the data which is gathered. Regulatory compliance requires forward predictions of plume evolution\, which can be checked against monitoring results to ensure the CO2 is ‘behaving as predicted’. It may also be necessary to assess the risk of CO2 injection affecting other resources\, such as groundwater\, hydrocarbons\, geothermal or storage projects (for natural gas or hydrogen). \nThe least conventional aspects of CCS simulation involve the coupling of fluid flow to additional physics. Thermal effects are important in the wellbore and the near-well environment\, with the cooling effects of injection reducing the maximum allowable injection pressure. Geochemical interactions with the reservoir rock or seal can potentially aid storage by mineralising CO2\, and this is the focus of in-situ carbonation research. Injection can also induce seismicity\, and this potential can be modelled as well as monitored during operations. Finally\, the rise of artificial intelligence and machine learning has prompted research into ways to accelerate the modelling process and allow fast history-matching. \nOverall\, CCS provides many fascinating challenges for subsurface modelling\, and the scope for this work is likely to expand significantly in Australia as more projects progress through feasibility studies towards implementation.

SUMMARY:PESA ACT/NSW Melbourne Cup Lunch
DESCRIPTION:Melbourne Cup and oil price prediction lunch\nJoin us in watching the race that stops the nation! A Calcutta and raffle will be held followed by a presentation on future oil price trends. See you there! \nMELBOURNE CUP SWEEP AND CALCUTTA PROCESS \nDue to the smaller groups of attendees and in an effort to increase interest in the Calcutta aspects of our price Prediction Day/Melbourne Cup our auctioneer\, Andy Rigg and the team have come up with an amended set of Rules to make the day more competitive and fun. The new rules of the front end of the Calcutta are as follows: \nEvery person registered and attending on the day of the meeting (including speakers) receives an option to purchase a ticket in the PESA Melbourne Cup (Sweep);\nEvery person above then has the choice to either exercise the option and purchase a ticket in the sweep for $40 or sell the option to the highest bidder\, who must then exercise the option (i.e. and pay the $40 to the auction team);\nThe price paid to buy an option goes to the original option holder;\nThe $40 goes to auction team as a pot for the race to the distributed between first\, second and third horses;\nWith 24 horses the pot should be $960;\nThe names of the persons exercising the options will be inserted into a hat and then drawn against horses drawn out of another hat;\n1/ If the number of exercised options is equal to the number of starters in the Melbourne Cup\, then every exercised option will receive a horse in the sweep;\n2/ If the number of exercised options is less than the number of starters\, then all the names of the registered persons attending will go back into the draw for the remaining horses;\n3/ If the number of exercised options is greater than the number of starters\, then not all exercised option owners will receive a horse in the sweep;\nOnce the owners of all the horses in the field are known\, then the call of the card and the normal Calcutta bidding process can begin as usual based on the declared pot. \nBest advice is to bring along some cash (no credit card facilities available in the Adams Room)\, a willingness to have a lot of fun and front up at the Masonic Club (also known as the Castlereagh Boutique Hotel) on Tuesday 7 November 2023 and get together with all your old friends for a great days entertainment.

This myth was finally busted in 2022 when Shell and Total Energies respectively announced the giant Graff and Venus discoveries in the Orange Basin offshore Namibia. This was the grand finale of a long-standing debate in which model and data fought a hard battle. On the one hand\, there was a model that did not support the presence\, quality and maturity of source rocks over oceanic crust. On the other hand\, the novel approach of applying seismic source rock characterization in a frontier basin was pointing to the presence of a world class source rock generating hydrocarbons migrating into large traps (Rodriguez et al.\, 2023 EAGE Uruguay) \nIn the Loseth et al.\, 2011 publication“Can hydrocarbon source rocks be identified on seismic data?” compelling evidence using a significant amount of North Sea seismic and well data indicated that seismic data can be used to identify source rocks. \nUsing a full source rock de-risking methodology and access to a large global seismic dataset has enabled identification of source rocks on seismic. This presentation will be a guided tour around the seismic expression of source rocks in frontier basins around the world.

SUMMARY:PESA WA November Evening talk: Natural Hydrogen Exploration - applying familiar tools in new ways
DESCRIPTION:Natural Hydrogen Exploration: Applying Familiar Tools in New Ways \n\nKrista Davies: Edith Cowan University\, School of Engineering\, Centre for Sustainable Energy Resources \n\n\nThe field of natural hydrogen exploration is currently experiencing a surge in global interest\, with a notable focus on Australia\, where recent legislative changes have created opportunities for exploration initiatives. But how can we effectively pursue this non-petroleum gas resource? \nIn recent years\, the international dialogue has revolved around the concepts of play fairway mapping and soil gas sampling. However\, the path to harnessing natural hydrogen is not as straightforward as merely marking serpentinites on a map\, assembling drilling equipment\, and venturing into the field. It’s important to acknowledge that natural hydrogen exploration presents distinct challenges that differ from conventional petroleum exploration\, necessitating tailored methodological adjustments. \nThe complex chemical interactions between hydrogen\, water\, and minerals within rocks are contingent upon various factors\, including the original mineral composition\, temperature\, pressure\, salinity and the redox conditions of the system. \nDuring this presentation\, we will delve into a selection of emerging techniques spanning fieldwork\, laboratory analysis\, and desktop methodologies that are currently being developed within the natural hydrogen industry. Many of these techniques share common ground with established practices in oil and gas exploration\, enabling a seamless and practical adaptation to the unique demands of natural hydrogen. \nIn light of the escalating importance of sustainable energy sources\, the exploration of natural hydrogen via the refinement of petroleum techniques assumes a pivotal role in safeguarding our future energy security. Our research underscores the significance of an efficient and pragmatic approach to unlocking the potential of natural hydrogen. SUMMARY:PESA SA/NT November Technical Luncheon Coorikiana Sandstone Play\, Cooper Basin region
DESCRIPTION:Coorikiana Sandstone Play\, Cooper Basin region\nCarmine Grasso \nSouth Australia’s Department for Energy and Mining (DEM) \n  \nAbstract\n\nPetroleum exploration of the Cooper/Eromanga basin commenced in 1954 with the granting of an exploration licence to Santos\, the dominant focus for operators being gas resources of the deeper Permian reservoirs of the Cooper Basin\, which are overlain by the younger shallower Eromanga Basin. However\, a recent industry focus to specifically target the shallower reservoirs\, viz.\, Coorikiana Sandstone of the Eromanga Basin\, has yielded rewarding outcomes\, thus adding to the Cooper/Eromanga basin reputation as Australia’s most prolific onshore oil and gas basin. \nThe early Cretaceous Coorikiana Sandstone has been proven to be a bona fide exploration\, appraisal and development target in the South Australian sector of the Cooper/Eromanga basin. This presentation of the play is aimed at providing explorers with a better understanding of the geology and potential importance of these regressive marine shoreface sandstone reservoirs. Recent activity in the South Australian portion of the Cooper/Eromanga basin has proven successful via low-cost shallow drilling campaigns\, focusing on delivering additional production rate and reserves for both oil and gas. These positive results in the Coorikiana Sandstone have not only placed the spotlight on this formation as a legitimate hydrocarbon target but it has also increased our knowledge on the importance of understanding the value of shallow hydrocarbon plays in the Eromanga Basin. \n  \n\nEvent Details:\nThursday\,  November 23rd\, 2023\nLuncheon: 12 pm for a 12:30 pm start \nPlace: Ayer’s House\, 288 North Tce\, Adelaide \nIncludes a 2-course lunch and drinks \nBookings close 1 pm Monday\, 20th November\nAny late bookings will incur an additional $20 fee. Strictly no walk-ins.
