SUMMARY:Structural Geology training course by Prof. Ken McClay
DESCRIPTION:The PESA SA-NT Branch will be hosting a 5-day structural geology training course by Professor Ken McClay from Monday 21st to Friday 25th of August. Bookings are now OPEN!! \nThis five-day classroom course consists of lectures\, seismic interpretation exercises and case histories. The course presents modern concepts of structural geology focused on fault and fold systems that form hydrocarbon traps in sedimentary basins. Emphasis is placed on the integration of data in order to determine the 4D evolution of structures\, their seismic expressions as well as utilising case histories and natural examples that can be analogues for sub-surface hydrocarbon traps. \nThe lectures are extensively illustrated with field examples\, remote sensing examples\, seismic sections\, conceptual models and in particular analogue models of fault systems – many models are shown as movies that demonstrate the progressive evolution of fault and fold systems. Practical exercises and examples are excellent seismic examples of structural styles in a large format A3 workbook. \nKey Themes of the training are given below\, and more details are in the attached Programme: \n1. Fault systems in sedimentary basins – Tectonic regimes; fault mechanics; fault geometries; fault growth & segmentation patterns\n2. Once registered with the webinar software you will receive a reminder e-mail 1 hour beforehand. \nMachine Learning and Intelligent Augmentation Applied to Legacy Subsurface Data \nPresented by Jess Kozman (Katalyst Data Management) \nAbstract \n\nRecent emphasis on low carbon energy projects in Australia  means large volumes of unstructured subsurface data become valuable to operators. . The need to  evaluate reservoirs for energy or carbon storage or light gas extraction means a requirement to de-risk geographic search and  make machine-readable text available for advanced data science algorithms. Companies with access to data gain a competitive advantage in licensing activities. Exisiting data management workflows may be too costly and resource intensive to support these emerging requirements. \nWe highlight how a  workflow using Machine Learning (ML) and Intelligence Augmentation (IA) can improve the efficiency of a typical data management workflow. Our example involves manually identifying relevant well logs in images from collection of tens of thousands of file types\, a typical task for an operator using open-file data in Australia. The current process may involve downloading from multiple state and federal repositories and manually entering indexing metadata into internal data repositories. \nWe have developed internal ML/AI data extraction workflows that that streamline automatically separating well log image files\, extracting mandatory indexing meta-data\, and presenting model-trained choices to end-users for adjustment and verification. The full solution involves image classification\, enhanced Optical Character Recognition(OCR)\, Natural Language Processing (NLP) for keyword labels and values\, and a User Interface (UI) that delivers and documents increased data quality and confidence metrics.

DESCRIPTION:Critical Minerals in SA – The road to net zero\nPresented by: Bronwyn A Camac (Geological Survey of South Australia)\n\n  \nAbstract \n\nFor about 150 years\, the use of petroleum products has driven world economies and is the greatest influence on quality-of-life improvement.\nBefore then\, we burned whatever we could find\, to keep us warm\, to fuel our emerging technologies\, and to cook our food. But most of these fuels could not keep up with population growth. Our forests were being pillaged\, our health declined due to coal pollution and our oceans stripped of whales.\nOur societies turned to the emerging new fuel – oil and its cleaner partner\, natural gas. We found its value more than just a fuel – we could make things from it – plastic\, clothes\, medicines\, fertilisers\, cosmetics\, and the list goes on and on. So\, dependent upon these products\, it becomes difficult to imagine that we can ever do without them.\nBut that time has come\, just as with wood\, coal and whales\, the market has outgrown us\, demanding cleaner fuels and products which has no effect on the earth and its climate.\nThis single most disruptive event of the last 150 years is being addressed in all countries to drive our economies toward net-zero carbon emission. To support net-zero targets\, the market is moving towards new technologies\, such as electric vehicles\, renewable technologies\, space technology\, telecommunication and defence. All of these technologies need critical minerals.\nThis is space where the mineral resource industry and the energy resource industry collide!\nCritical minerals are described by Geoscience Australia as “minerals that are essential to our modern technologies\, economies and national security\, and whose supply chains are vulnerable to disruption.”\nSouth Australia is well-endowed with many of the minerals and metals projected to be in short supply as this energy transition progresses. SA is rich in copper and currently holds 69% of Australia’s copper resource. It is a major producer of mineral sands\, with their associated rare earth elements and is rich in graphite. While CCS “looks like” a familiar oil and gas operation\, the rationale\, business case\, regulation and social license environment are very different. While these differences are crucial\, there are many less obvious but equally important technical differences in how CCS is implemented\, compared to the oil and gas paradigm. This course of seminars will explore what’s different about CCS. \nSite Selection and Characterisation – What’s Different About CCS? – Tess Dance (CSIRO) \nAbstract \n\nThe goal for carbon dioxide storage site selection and characterisation is to find a suitable location where an effective reservoir exists\, matched to a CO2 source in both volume and injection rate. To ensure the CO2 is safely contained\, the relative contribution of key trapping mechanisms need to be defined\, thus reducing adverse risks to natural resources or the community. In Australia\, the framework for offshore CO2 storage has been adapted from petroleum legislation. The tools\, processes\, and methodologies also mirror those developed in the search for oil and gas\, and one might think it’s simpler since factors like establishing there has been sufficient charge can be bypassed. Indeed\, to avert conflicts over resources\, locations where hydrocarbons are less likely to be found are preferred. However\, this preference leads to a quandary: how do we ascertain storage potential in areas lacking prior exploration data? Given this situation\, many assume that depleted fields are attractive options\, with minimal risk and uncertainty due to their history of retaining hydrocarbons and the extensive characterization by prior operators. But these sites bring their own unique set of challenges. In this first talk of the series we will introduce screening criteria required to find prospective CCS sites and some Australian examples where we show “what’s different about CCS”? \nSpeaker Biography \nDr Tess Dance has a PhD from the University of Adelaide in Petroleum Geoscience\, and over twenty years of experience in basin analysis and reservoir characterisation for geological storage of Carbon Dioxide. Dr Dance is the author of numerous high impact publications in the field of CO2 geological storage\, monitoring and verification\, and has specialised knowledge of sedimentology\, sequence stratigraphy and geological depositional environmental analysis. In her role as geo-modeller for the CO2CRC Otway Project\, she has been involved in well planning\, core logging\, data analysis\, seismic interpretation\, modelling\, and simulation for Australia’s first CCS demonstration pilot site. She currently leads the Reservoir Simulation team in CSIRO Energy Resources.

With a pipeline of major resource projects and considerable yet to find exploration potential this highly prospective region is attracting considerable attention. \nEffective solutions to sub-surface technical challenges facing successful field development and production\, as well as future exploration success\, will ensure cost-effective and timely project delivery\, but choosing the best technologies to deploy is critical to this goal. \nVendors from the service industry\, Academia and R&D organisations are invited to pitch technology solutions addressing a range of sub-surface issues that represent potential barriers to project success across themes of Geology\, Geophysics\, Petrophysics and Reservoir Engineering. SUMMARY:PESA ACT/NSW September Technical Lunch
DESCRIPTION:Tony Allan – The Darai Limestone\, T-Letter stages and strontium with everything: exploration stratigraphy in the Papuan Basin\, a lab and field perspective.\nNotice: Date change to Tuesday 19th September \nThe Oligo-Miocene Darai Limestone crops out over much of the Papuan Fold Belt in the western Papuan Basin\, so its stratigraphy is critical in developing structural models to target Mesozoic reservoirs. Since its first application in the Muller Range in 1990 by Mobil\, strontium (Sr) dating has been used extensively throughout the Papuan Fold to map the base Darai surface. Most of the isotopic analysis was done at the CSIRO labs in Sydney\, in conjunction with petrographic study of limestones as a QC on Sr ages. Without name-dropping too many species\, the talk will outline how the petrographic and field research revitalised the conventional “T-Letter” foram biostratigraphy and Darai microfacies stratigraphy through its calibation to the Sr data. This has been a close collaborative effort with many exploration companies – so some industry geologists might be named. \nExploration for Tertiary limestone reservoirs in the eastern Papuan Basin was revived by InterOil in the early 2000s\, resulting in the 2009 Antelope gas discovery in a Miocene “reef”. By contrast with the Darai “platform”\, in the east sedimentation in a more rifted margin is reflected in the Tertiary sequence; with localised shallow carbonate deposition contiguous with deeper water carbonate and clastic sedimentation\, and the tectonic overprint from the middle Miocene of foreland  Aure  volcanigenic sediments. Within this setting the stratigraphic record of marker forams (& other calacreous microfssils) is complicated by geological factors including reworking and condensation/non-deposition. As a result\, the “noise free” T-Letter scheme and broader microfacies sequence in the Darai has been important to the exploration search for carbonate reservoirs in the east. \nThis account will touch on lessons relevant to ongoing exploration; (1) some findings on Sr age anomalies and their geological and diagenetic causes that have emerged\, particularly in the search for “reef reservoirs in the eastern Papuan basin\, and (2) potential to refine Tertiary sedimentaion models with the large basinwide petrographic and Sr dataset that captures time-facies information. And some concluding remarks on the Darai exploration legacy for current and future Tertiary basin research on the Australian Margin.

DESCRIPTION:Casting a Bigger Shadow: Big new opportunities in Australian Basins revealed by regional fluid inclusion data\n \nEnhanced hydrocarbon exploration\, Reduced development risk\, Improved geological storage of CO2 \n\nMark Lisk (Ascendience Geoscience) \n\n\nAustralia boasts the largest resource of fluid inclusion data in the world\, with more than 800 wells\,\nleading the way in application by the oil and gas industry. For exploration\, where constraining the\ntiming\, origin and phases of fluid migration is crucial\, the contribution to improved understanding of\nprocesses that produce\, alter\, or destroy hydrocarbon systems has been profound. These data\nrevolutionise the mitigation of risk in modern petroleum systems analysis\, improve understanding of\nproven systems for better appraisal and development planning and reveal pathfinders to new\npetroleum systems that will yield future discoveries. \nIn field development these data are especially valuable\, predicting down-dip oil rims in gas fields\,\noffering constraint on reservoir quality\, and by constraining water saturation in fields where formation\nwater samples are contaminated these unique data augment conventional measurements and yield\nsuperior control on the accuracy of field reserve calculations. \nAs geological storage of CO2 emerges as a vital climate mitigation strategy fluid inclusion data provides\ncrucial insights for effective screening of storage sites. Historically\, the understanding of plays in this region were largely model driven and therefore the ground-truthing of depositional environments (DE) and gross depositional environments (GDE) are critical. This aspect has been investigated for the Sherbrook Supersequence (SS) by the integration of legacy wireline and core data\, with regional 2D seismic facies mapping of new and reprocessed data from Geoscience Australia’s 2020 Otway Basin seismic program. Core observations were matched to wireline logs and seismic facies with resulting well based DE interpretations calibrated to seismic resolution Regional GDE intervals. Integration of well and seismic observations lead to the compilation of a basin-wide Regional GDE map for the Sherbrook SS. We will highlight key differences\, in terms of phase behaviour\, between CO2 and other fluids more typically encountered in oil and gas operations\, and the implications these have on multiphase flow in the reservoir. The main flow mechanisms\, as well as physical scaling laws incorporating capillarity\, buoyancy and viscosity will be discussed and used to analyse the flow regimes typically encountered in the field. The talk will end with discussion on dissolution\, residual\, and mineral trapping mechanisms.

DESCRIPTION:Seismic in the 60s\nTwo clapped out vessels\nOne drunken skipper\n100 ton of Nitramon \nAn explosive combination!\nPlus Discussion Forum: The future of the PESA NSW Branch\nPlease complete the membership survey by clicking here \nSummary:\nSet in the early days of marine seismic in Australia\, December 1966 to February 1967 \nI spent 3 months as a summer student. It was a 2 boat survey – both clapped out coastal freighters MV Merino and MV Paul Markson. \nAn incident filled trip. \nBallasting the kerosene filled streamer with lead and gaffer tape at midnight on a pitching deck 30ft above the water with no rails whatsoever (OHS was an unknown acronym). Deck awash with kero which rotted all our footwear (and feet). \nSkipper was a drunk\, Party Chief was an idiot. \n8500 foot streamer cut in half by a freighter because the skipper couldn’t signal properly with his Aldis lamp (he could hardly hold it!). \nStreamer sections blown up because the shooting boat couldn’t keep position. \nStreamer sections bitten by sharks. \nSpanish deckhand almost dead from carbon tetrachloride poisoning because he couldn’t tell anyone what was wrong. \nDrunk found down in the hull complete with wine flagon just before we headed to sea. \nHeading back to Portland in a Force 10 gale knowing that the Sedco 135G had slipped its tow and was somewhere out in front of us. \nAnd to cap it all\, we found that 50% of our powder (about 25 tons) would sometimes not explode so it was jettisoned overboard – 1\,000 yellow canisters bobbing off into the Tasman Sea.

To understand fluid flow\, pressure must be expressed as over-pressure variation\, the variation in potential\, equating to over-pressure above hydrostatic gradient or head (the height a water column would rise above MSL in a pipe intersecting the point of measurement).  Variation in fluid potential within the aquifer beneath a hydrocarbon field results in a variation in FWL over a field (tilted or stepped contacts).  This is not evident in most fields due to the small size of fields relative to the small variations in potential which are routinely interpreted as measurement error.  However\, when the variation is higher\nthese tilts or steps can be very significant\, due to: \n\nLarge field areas\nFaults causing baffling\nLower permeabilities\nHigher water flows\nHigh density hydrocarbons where minor variation in potential causes\nsignificant tilting.\n\nIn this talk concepts such as overpressure\, potentiometric maps and sections and compartmentalised reservoirs are discussed.  Examples from all over the world are presented along with the impact on failed exploration wells and sub-optimum development plans.  Vertical variation in potential within fields is also discussed. The concept of an Enviro-Pad 3D is to provide 3D imaging over a proposed lateral well path faster and cheaper than traditional 3D surface seismic.
