DESCRIPTION:PESA SA/NT August Luncheon\n“Petroleum geoscience and the energy transition: \na personal historical perspective and predictions for the future”\nDr Peter Moore\n\n  \nAbstract:\nThe petroleum industry was technologically advanced by the mid 1900s\, but a number of developments over the last half century stand out in the areas of seismic\, sequence stratigraphy\, assessment technologies\, deepwater plays\, drilling\, offshore developments\, CSG and shale\, which will be discussed\, including from a personal perspective. These developments have served to maintain the competitiveness of the petroleum industry and have satisfied an increasing demand over time. \nHowever\, a key question for the industry is its future role in the evolving energy transition. Analysis is difficult because there are multiple competing narratives and strong vested interests. \nToday we sit at a pivot point\, with a growing divergence of possible energy futures\, depending on how the world balances economic growth\, energy poverty\, geopolitics\, and great power competition against emissions reduction\, fossil fuel elimination and climate change concerns. \nIn the decade since the Paris agreement and despite significant progress\, the 1.5oC goal is lost and fossil fuel’s contribution to energy consumption remains at 80%. \nWhile both sides (fossil fuel supporters and renewable proponents) argue their case\, the next 15 years at least is becoming clearer – a US/China energy and manufacturing divide\, huge growth of renewables but matched by overall energy growth\, the emergence of nuclear\, and the persistence of petroleum\, especially gas. \nDespite trillions of dollars spent on the energy transition\, we have underestimated the difficulty in speedily transitioning the world’s energy and industrial infrastructure\, and have underestimated global growth\, including overall energy consumption. This can be seen by comparing predictions and model outcomes published over the last decade. \nFor today’s petroleum geoscientists\, technology and jobs will continue to evolve while new areas are likely to include advanced geothermal\, CCS\, and potentially natural hydrogen. DESCRIPTION:PESA SA/NT October Luncheon\n“Geological CO₂ Storage: Familiar Subsurface\, Different Questions”\nDr. Katherine Romanak\nThe University of Texas at Austin’s Bureau of Economic Geology \n  \nAbstract \nGeological CO₂ Storage: Familiar Subsurface\, Different Questions \nPetroleum geoscientists come to CO₂ storage with a powerful advantage: the rocks\, wells\, fluids and subsurface tools are familiar. But CCS can change the meaning of familiar observations—and sometimes reverse the questions we are accustomed to asking. Injection is not simply production done backwards. When is migration expected\, and when is it a containment concern? Does movement outside a predicted plume represent failure? Can there be environmental impact without CO₂ leakage? And when does a storage issue become a reportable emission? This presentation will explore where petroleum experience transfers directly to geological CO₂ storage and where familiar concepts need to be reconsidered. Drawing on examples from storage projects\, monitoring research\, and controlled-release experiments\, it will distinguish three objectives that are often unintentionally conflated: demonstrating containment\, protecting the environment\, and accounting for emissions. The central argument is simple: before deciding what to monitor\, we must first be clear about the question the monitoring is meant to answer. This study presents a pedagogical framework that integrates technical\, environmental\, and policy perspectives to support interdisciplinary sustainability education. Focusing on case studies from the United Kingdom and Türkiye\, it explores how different lithium extraction pathways influence water consumption\, water scarcity\, and overall environmental sustainability across contrasting geological and regulatory contexts. \nIn the UK\, lithium extraction is derived from both primary hard rock sources\, such as lepidolite-bearing granites in Cornwall\, and secondary geothermal brines. In Türkiye\, the emphasis is on geothermal lithium production using Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) methods\, including adsorption\, ion exchange\, and membrane technologies. These approaches are compared with conventional evaporation-based techniques\, which involve prolonged processing times and significant water loss. \nUsing water footprint assessment\, the study evaluates total and freshwater use\, brine abstraction\, and associated environmental risks. By integrating insights from literature\, industry\, and policy sources\, the project highlights trade-offs between extraction efficiency and water impacts. The resulting framework supports the development of interdisciplinary skills and aligns sustainability education with emerging industrial and policy needs. \nBuilding on outputs from a Global Engagement Fund project and associated student research\, This work provides an adaptable\, practice‑oriented approach for strengthening sustainability‑focused education. It highlights opportunities for aligning curricula with emerging industrial\, environmental\, and societal needs.

SUMMARY:PESA WA: Alice Springs Field Trip and Core Viewing
DESCRIPTION:PESA WA ALICE SPRINGS FIELD TRIP\nPESA WA is hosting a field trip to Alice Springs in September 2026.  This is a fantastic opportunity to explore the region\, engage directly with field activities\, and deepen your understanding of the area’s geological context. \nStarting in Alice Springs\, the field trip includes three nights of 4-star accommodation\, with breakfast and lunch provided\, along with transport to and from the field. Expert guidance and commentary will be provided by Peter Haines with contributions from Fiona Burns and Simon Lang. The itinerary covers four days of Amadeus Basin geology\, split evenly between two half days viewing cores and two full days in the field. \nDuring the core workshops\, Fiona Burns (Task Fronterra) will lead participants through the Tent Hill-1 core. This well provides a near-complete section through the Lower to Middle Ordovician stratigraphy\, including the Pacoota Sandstone and overlying units. The Pacoota interval is represented by sub-units P3 to P1\, and recent work suggests deposition in a high-energy\, wave- and storm-dominated shoreface to shelf environment\, with a clear influence from nearby river systems. Simon Lang (GeoSed Consulting) will complement this by guiding the group through cores from the Mereenie Field\, including the P4 sub-unit of the Pacoota Sandstone\, offering a broader view of the full stratigraphic succession. \nIn the field\, Peter Haines (DMPE) will lead the group through the Ellery Creek section\, located approximately 90 km west of Alice Springs. This outcrop provides an exceptional\, near-continuous record of northern Amadeus Basin stratigraphy from the Tonian through to the Devonian. The field component will focus on the Larapinta Group\, comprising the Pacoota Sandstone\, Horn Valley Siltstone\, and Stairway Sandstone\, which represent the primary reservoir and source intervals for key regional accumulations such as the Palm Valley gas field\, Mereenie oil and gas field\, and the Surprise oil field. Participants can expect to see well-exposed sedimentary facies\, trace fossils\, and clear expressions of basin evolution\, with a possible extension into Devonian units depending on access conditions. \nBy combining detailed core analysis with regionally significant outcrop observations\, the trip is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the stratigraphy and to highlight how depositional environments and systems have evolved. \nThere will also be the opportunity to hunt for fossils\, including trilobites\, within the Horn Valley Siltstone. \nFieldtrip Leader: Peter Haines. \nContributors: Fiona Burns\, Simon Lang\, Charlie Verdel. \n \nItinerary: \nDay 1: PM: Core Store (0.5 day): Tent Hill-1 Pacoota and Stairway sandstone cores led by Fiona Burns. \nDay 2: Field Day: Ellery Creek\, Pacoota Sandstone section (shallow marine/deltaic) led by Peter Haines. \nDay 3: Field Day: Ellery Creek section (revisited) and other outcrops (stromatolites\, Dalmatian Rock) by Peter Haines and Charlie Verdel. \nDay 4: AM: Core Store (0.5 day): Mereenie Field core led by Simon Lang \n  \nCost: \n\nAttendance is open only to PESA members\, including interstate and international members.  Non-members must join PESA to attend.\n$1500.00 per person (includes accommodation\, transport to field areas\, breakfast\, lunch and digital field guide).\n\nPlease note that flights are not included in the above\, and places are limited.

SUMMARY:PESA NSW September 2026 Technical Lunch: Bass Oil
DESCRIPTION:Bass Oil Kiwi-1 Triassic Gas Discovery \nAt the September meeting I will give an overview of Bass Oil\, its operations and its growth strategies. Importantly\, I will be focusing on presenting some of the initial results from the Company’s Triassic gas study in the northern Cooper Basin in South Australia following up the Kiwi gas discovery in the Triassic aged Callamurra formation. The liquids rich Kiwi gas field continues to be one of Bass’s most exciting assets. \nKiwi Gas Project \nKiwi 1 was drilled in 2003 as a Jurassic oil exploration well. It was not successful however is discovered gas in the Triassic Callamurra section. Although the well tested almost 9 million cubic feet per day on a short DST\, the discovery was never completed and properly tested. Back then it was thought to be too small with a high CO2 content. \nBass acquired the property in 2022 and completed and flow tested in 2024. Following the successful 2024 flow test\, which recorded 4.1 mmcfd of gas and 988 barrels of condensate per day\, Bass has progressed the project toward development. \nIn February 2026\, the South Australian Government awarded Bass $3.5 million in funding to support connection of Kiwi to the Cooper Basin gas network. Bass has advanced technical work on Kiwi\, including interpretation of the reprocessed Kiwi 3D seismic dataset. The results have been encouraging and continue to support the quality of the discovery and surrounding prospectivity. \nThe Kiwi hydrocarbons are extremely liquids rich and low in impurities\, with less than 5% CO₂ and over 200 barrels of condensate per million cubic feet of gas\, as previously disclosed. These characteristics make Kiwi one of the most attractive undeveloped gas discoveries in the Basin. Kiwi’s liquids yield positions it as a high value development opportunity in a market where condensate-rich gas is increasingly sought after.
