DESCRIPTION:PESA SA/NT February Luncheon\nSeismic interpretation of the Petrel Sub-basin CO2 Storage Opportunity \nJames Komenza\nAbstract: \nAn integrated geologic and geophysical study of the Mesozoic storage resource in the Petrel Sub-basin (Bonaparte Basin). This study includes regional petrophysics\, geomechanics\, rock physics\, seismic reprocessing and inversion in an area of sparse well and seismic data. \nAlthough numerous wells have been drilled in the Petrel Sub-basin\, their focus has been the underlying Palaeozoic petroleum system\, resulting in scant or compromised data quality in the overburden. This often limits data utility for reservoir characterization\, field appraisal and development planning for the primary Mesozoic storage targets. Seismic reprocessing and quantitative interpretation supported by a model-based rock physics workflow have been used to fill in some of the gaps. This new data has been used to interpret depositional trends of both reservoir and seal\, reservoir quality\, heterogeneity and clay content\, seal presence and thickness\, and interval velocity away from well control. DESCRIPTION:Wadjemup (Rottnest) Field Trip – Carbonate systems\, sea level change and Quokkas– by bike\nLed by Dr Moyra Wilson (University of Western Australia) \nThough some 18 km offshore at the present day\, during previous glacial lowstands Wadjemup (Rottnest Island) was joined to the mainland. Evidence of fluctuating sea-levels and environmental change is preserved both in the oral histories of the Whadjuk Noongar people but also the rocks and landforms of the island. Wadjemup offers excellent opportunity to explore classic carbonate aeolianites\, coral reef\, lacustrine and lagoonal deposits and marine features that are a conspicuous feature of the Pleistocene Tamala Limestone and associated units that outcrop over some 1000 km of WA’s coastline. \nThe trip\, led by Moyra Wilson\, will also facilitate broader discussions of approaches to palaeosea-level reconstructions\, climate change and the coastal dynamics of WA’s younger geological evolution. \nPlease note that for insurance reasons this trip is only open to members. Recent studies in Australia have documented hydrogen in natural gas samples in both sedimentary basins and cratonic settings. Study of open file data at the Geological Survey of Western Australia (GSWA) focused on historical occurrences of hydrogen primarily within the onshore sedimentary basins. Petroleum wells were the primary data source\, but natural hydrogen has also been detected in mineral exploration drillholes\, shallow gas seep drilling and water bores in Western Australia. The GSWA has investigated soil gas spot sampling and continuous soil gas measurements for natural hydrogen in the Canning and Perth Basins. Additional studies include the use of Fluid Inclusion Stratigraphy (FIS) from well cuttings and core demonstrating anomalous zones of both hydrogen and helium in petroleum wells. \nLegislation for exploration of natural hydrogen in Western Australia was passed in May 2024 by adding hydrogen as a prescribed regulated substance to the Petroleum Legislation Amendment Act 2024. DESCRIPTION:PESA WA invites you to a technical Evening Event Thursday 13th February.\nNew Tricks for Old Dogs: Modelling for the Energy Transition\nPresented by Mark Bentley (Langdale Geoscience) \nSo\, the plan is to store CO2 … \nIf we’re involved in making reservoir and simulation models for oil and gas production\, what do we have to do differently now for the world of storage?  On the face of it\, these are just gas disposal schemes (simple).  On closer inspection\, it’s not quite like that\, and it turns out it’s much more interesting (harder). \nThis short talk looks at some areas of change and the aspects we need to get right if our forecasts are to be meaningful at all.  There’s a clear shift from sedimentary to more structural themes (which we have to be much better at)\, a replacement of familiar concepts such as in-place resource volumes and recovery factor to less familiar ideas of storativity and storage efficiency and a rethink of the importance of heterogeneity in the face of different fluids and in a non-isothermal world. \nThe scales we model at will need to be different\, and so will the timescales.  There’s also the over-arching issue that best solutions are likely to lie in aquifers\, yet most projects on the drawing board are for depleted gas fields. Once registered with the webinar software you will receive a reminder e-mail 1 hour beforehand. \nForward Modelling for Stratigraphic and Structural Analysis in Complex Mini-Basins\, Offshore Sureste Basin\, Mexico \nPresented by Donald Christie (Fugro) \nAbstract \n\nStructurally active mini-basins characterize continental margins such as deep-water Angola\, Brazil\, North Borneo\, and the Gulf of Mexico\, and the stratal architecture of these mini-basins is dominantly controlled by the interplay of structural growth and sediment supply. We simulate and reproduce the observed stratal geometry using a reduced-complexity\, fast computational model (Onlapse-2D)\, and through a process of iteration the model output is matched to available subsurface control (well logs\, 3D seismic data). \nFocusing on the late Miocene tectonostratigraphic evolution of a complex mini-basin in the offshore Sureste Basin\, Mexico. Two cross-sections were chosen to intersect the existing well\, one parallel to the axis of the minibasin and the other perpendicular to it\, and two Onlapse models were generated from each. A good first-pass match between model output and geological observations was obtained\, which allowed us to identify and separate the effects of two distinct phases of compressional folding and a longer-lasting episode of salt withdrawal/diapirism\, and to determine the timing of these events.\nReduced-complexity simulation is an efficient and effective approach to understand the tectonostratigraphic evolution of complex deep-water minibasins. Onlapse models use real seismic interpretations of real active structures and by matching the forward model to the existing well data\, it can provide insight into the geometry and timing of the controlling structural processes; demonstrate the changing proportion of background vs. sediment-gravity-flow deposits; and aid in the identification of key erosional or constructional surfaces within the stratigraphy.

DESCRIPTION:PESA NSW & SPE NSW Christmas Party\nPHILIPPINES GEOLOGY AND PETROLEUM POTENTIAL \nThe petroleum potential of the Philippines has long been regarded by “industry experts” as average at best. The Philippines is a country with active crustal plate movements\, subduction zones\, regional wrench faults and active volcanoes located on the western edge of the Circum-Pacific “Ring of Fire”. \nGeologically\, the Philippines is the eastern rifted edge of Asia\, which was initially separated by rifting and the development of the South China Sea commencing in the Eocene. Initial rifting resulted in the deposition of an Eocene clastic section\, dominantly non-marine with extensive coal development. \nThe appearance of oceanic crust in the late Oligocene initiated the drift phase with development of extensive barrier and pinnacle limestone reefs on the upthrown sides of the large normal faults created by rifting. These Oligocene to Early Miocene reefs created the reservoir for many of the large gas fields discovered to date\, eg Malampaya\, which largely sourced the gas from the underlying coal measures. About 10 million years ago the Asian\, Pacific and Australian crustal plates collided creating compression\, subduction\, regional wrench faults and volcanism. This tectonic activity caused regional uplift\, particularly in the west of the Philippines centred on east Palawan and deposition of Early-Mid Miocene sedimentary deposits\, dominated by an extensive deep water marine clastic section with excellent quality sandstone reservoirs. Waxy oils waxy with associated gas are the main hydrocarbon discoveries. These hydrocarbons have been sourced by both marine and non-marine organic matter. \nThe Late Miocene to present day sedimentary section is dominated by a thick section of marine marls and limestone reefs with associated volcanism adjacent areas of plate to subduction. The Tertiary to Recent geology of the Philippines is very similar to that recorded in Indonesia\, Thailand\, Vietnam and parts of offshore China. The Philippines experienced extensive petroleum exploration in the 1960s but concerted exploration efforts since then have been patchy. Whilst trap integrity is considered the main exploration risk\, there is still excellent potential for oil and gas discoveries of significant size. Gas2Grid Limited has been active with onshore petroleum exploration in the Philippines since 2005 and the author since 1981.

Encompassing concept\, pre-FEED\, FEED execution and operation stages across the entire CCS value chain\, our studies covered capture from traditional oil and gas operators\, power generation\, refineries\, and hard-to-abate industries\, as well as conditioning processes such as dehydration\, liquefaction\, and temporary storage\, and transportation via pipeline or ship to storage sites.  In this presentation\, Stephen Stokes and Katarina Van Der Haar will cover a selection of the latest technological insights and lessons learned from Wood’s involvement in over 200 CCS studies worldwide.  The presentation will cover a range of topics\, including CCS multi-emitter hubs and the use of common pipelines\, the importance of impurities in CO2 streams and alignment of CO2 specifications\, repurposing of existing infrastructure\, and insights from cross-border liquefied CO2 shipping into Australian storage locations.  Through case studies from several state-of-the-art CCS projects from around the world\, Stephen and Katarina will highlight the critical importance of information sharing\, collaboration\, and alignment across the entire value chain for all CCS proponents.

We would like to thank our friends from SPE who are have organised this event and are subsidising it by opening it to our PESA memebrs we well as for all ASEG members. \n  \nBefore our lunch there will be a technical talk by SPE distinguished lecturer Juliane Heiland (SLB)\, titled: \nGeomechanics for Field Development and Production Management – experience from two decades of reservoir geomechancis studies\nAbstract: \nModern numerical 3D Geomechanical models can provide detailed subsurface geological understanding to predict failure events impacting reservoir engineering and production management. \nGeomechanical models have become a standard input for drilling engineering and well planning and in many companies geomechanical teams today work closely with drilling teams. The same integrated modeling and engineering approach has not taken hold yet when considering reservoir engineering and production management\, where the use of geomechanics models and close cooperation between geomechanics and engineering teams can still be improved. \nMy presentation shows how modern models provide the geomechanical tools to analyse potential wellbore and reservoir failures that can impact production. I will show the useful characteristics a geomechanics model should have to solve production challenges and influence reservoir management decisions. \nSpeaker’s Bio: \nJuliane Heiland is a Geomechanics Advisor at SLB focussing on rock and soil mechanics applied to a wide range of engineering domains. Her first degree in Engineering Geology from the Technical University Munich gave her a solid geological sciences foundation applied to civil engineering and tunneling. A PhD (from 1994 to 1998) focussed on landslide research in Italy\, Germany and the Czech Republic. Academic post-doc research at the GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam focussed on laboratory solutions through high-pressure rock mechanics experiments applied to problems in tunneling and geothermal well productivity. \nShe joined SLB (formerly Schlumberger) as a research scientist in 2001 and worked six years in geomechanical research towards sanding and perforating. In 2007\, Juliane moved into field consulting services providing geomechanics engineering solutions to SLB clients in Africa and Europe. After a brief move to the operator side of the industry with Maersk Oil\, providing wellbore stability analysis for drilling planning\, she returned to SLB in 2015. Following on from this\, seven companies have lodged over 40 applications for PELs targeting natural hydrogen over the State?s basins and crystalline basement provinces. PEL 687 is the first licence in Australia targeting natural hydrogen and was granted to first movers Gold Hydrogen Pty Ltd in July 2021 over Yorke Peninsula and Kangaroo Island. The second licence (PEL 691) was granted to H2EX in June 2022 over eastern Eyre Peninsula. DESCRIPTION:PESA WA invites you to a technical Evening Event Thursday 21st November.\nTop Seal and Compartmentalisation in the Kingia Play\, implications for porosity preserving Plays. \nPresented by Alex Fuerst (Molyneux Advisors) \nIn the Kingia play of the North Perth Basin\, significant compartmentalisation is observed across the basin and within individual fields\, despite the sand-on-sand juxtaposition. This compartmentalisation manifests in both pressure and phase (gas/water) variations. Cemented fractures are observed near fault zones in Perth Basin wells. This results in decreased permeability near faults\, as evidenced by local wells in the Perth Basin. \nSEM images show fractures within grains of grain coated sands are sufficient to serve as nucleation sites for quartz cementation. In contrast\, within the Irwin River Coal Measures (IRCM)\, the grain surfaces alone provide sufficient sites for cementation. The IRCM sands exhibit permeabilities that are characteristic of seals\, with samples displaying quartz cementation\, kaolin cementation\, or a combination of both. \nThe implications for play risk / play maps are significant. Shallower Kingia penetrations face an unproven top seal due to the less cemented IRCM\, potentially explaining the multiple shallower exploration failures. At greater depths\, the presence of more complex faulting may enhance fault seal integrity and lead to more intricate trap configurations. However\, this also likely increases development complexity due to reservoir compartmentalization. DESCRIPTION:PESA SA FieldTrip\nFrom a carbonate ramp to siliciclastic fluvio-deltaics in a tectonically active Delamerian Cambrian rift. Seismic-scale depositional systems in outcrop\n  \n\nSaturday 16th and Sunday 17th November 2024\n\nAn opportunity to investigate the Cambrian evolution of South Australia through spectacular seismic scale coastal exposures in the Fleurieu peninsula.\nThe field trip will be led by Rhodri Johns and Elinor Alexander. The full excursion will be two days but participants will have the option of participating in either or both days. Participants intending\nParticipating in both days is encouraged to overnight at Break Free Wirrina Cove for R & R.\nThe first day will be spent examining the carbonate ramp deposits of the Sellick Hill Formation and the clastic turbidites of the Carrickalinga Head Formation at Myponga and Carrickalinga. Here signs of the early evolution of the Delamerian rift will be viewed. The second day will be spent viewing the spectacular outcrops of the Fishery Beach section on the south coast near Cape Jervis. Here a magnificently exposed prograding clastic sequence\, including Carrickalinga Head turbidites and the shallow marine deltaics of the Backstairs Passage Formation.\n\nItinerary \nSaturday 16th November 2024.\nSelf-drive to meet at the south Myponga Beach car park at 10am (76km from Adelaide). Once we’ve examined shallow marine Sellick Hill Fm exposures\, it’s a short drive to Carrickalinga Head to spend time looking at the overlying deep water turbidite facies. Once registered with the webinar software you will receive a reminder e-mail 1 hour beforehand. \nWA Carbon Dioxide Geological Storage Atlas \nPresented by Julie Cass (GSWA) \nAbstract \n\nIn May 2021\, the Ministerial Taskforce on Climate Action identified CO2 sequestration as a key priority\, leading GSWA to receive funding in July 2022 to develop a CO2 Storage Atlas for Western Australia. The atlas incorporates updated geological datasets and new interpretations to assess CO2 storage potential across the onshore and State waters of the Perth\, Southern Carnarvon\, Northern Carnarvon\, Canning\, and Officer Basins. \nKey to this project is regional subsurface mapping\, which involves interpreting seismic data collected by petroleum companies over the past 70 years. The interpretation workflow includes loading digital seismic (SEGY) and well (LAS) data into Kingdom software. Since most available seismic data is in two-way time\, mapping is first conducted in time before converting it to depth using various techniques. Mappable horizons identified on seismic data are tied to formation boundaries penetrated by petroleum wells and drillholes with downhole velocity data. As a byproduct\, this project also involves capturing and cleaning up velocity survey data from well reports. \nDepth mapping for the Officer and Perth Basins has been completed\, and interpretation work continues for the Canning\, Northern\, and Southern Carnarvon Basins. Key features noted in the Perth and Officer Basin maps regarding CO2 storage potential include fault location and density\, reservoir formation depths and thickness\, and\, in the Officer Basin\, the presence of salt bodies. \nTo support the regional assessment of reservoir quality for the CO2 Storage Atlas project\, 8\,070 well log LAS files were standardized into a uniform format using Python. This standardization ensures consistent depth references\, mnemonics\, units\, coordinates\, and well names\, enabling AI-based analysis. Furthermore\, routine core analysis (RCA) data has been quality-checked and reformatted to enhance accessibility. \nA subset of petrophysical interpretations have been completed for the Perth and Canning Bains. Storage targets were identified using a shale volume cutoff of 30% and an effective porosity cutoff of 10%\, revealing the Perth Basin’s sand-prone nature. Given the highly faulted nature of the Perth Basin\, the impact of faulting was evaluated through the interpretation of apparent formation water salinity. Significant intervals of Archie-quality sand are present in most wells\, allowing for accurate assessments of apparent water resistivity. Water salinity changes frequently in each well but does not follow normal shale dewatering trends. This implies that vertical heterogeneity is significant but lateral movement of water across faults is expected\, most likely through sand-on-sand juxtaposition. This evaluation also highlights which formations act as competent and reliable seals. \nIn summary\, the petrophysical interpretation indicates that the Perth Basin is highly sand-prone. While structural containers are likely to be small\, the presence of reservoir heterogeneity will enhance unstructured containment. \nAll datasets and results are available for download from WAPIMS via the CO2 Storage Atlas tile.

These gas fields are naturally high in CO2 and may present a good opportunity from a geological perspective for CO2 storage. In support of this an updated interpretation of the depositional environment at Merivale\, Westgrove\, Yellowbank and Punchbowl Gully has been developed to examine changes in depositional environment along the Aldebaran Sandstone paleocoastline. Comparison of the production history of Merivale to the variability in the depositional environment shows that there is strong contribution from the depositional environment to production behaviour. \nSandstones and coal seams in the upper Reids Dome beds may present a secondary target to depleted gas field storage in the southern Denison Trough. Gas distribution in the Reids Dome beds coals shows that the Hutton-Wallumbillla Fault may be a migration pathway for magmatic CO2 into the unit. High CO2 concentrations and saturations within these coals demonstrate a natural analogue for storage within this system. DESCRIPTION:An emerging new Petroleum System with world-class plays in the \nTorres Sub-Basin\, Offshore Papua New Guinea \nTim Rady1 and John Chambers2  \n1 Geomorph Energy \n2Larus Energy Limited \n\nABSTRACT\nThe Papuan Basin is the only basin with production in Papua New Guinea but is relatively unexplored for a typical Australian Continental Margin Mesozoic basin. It hosts the Kutubu Oil Field Developments and the PNG LNG project\, as well as several gas fields that are planned to be developed in the coming years\, but its southeastern extension\, the Torres Sub-Basin\, remains undrilled. Modern proprietary and regional multi-client seismic data in the offshore Torres Sub-Basin is now revealing an active Petroleum system with a generating Late Cretaceous Source rock and three main identified play types: \n\nMiocene deep-water clastics in a large submarine Miocene to Pliocene foldbelt\nPinch-out plays of Miocene to Pliocene age against a basement high\nPalaeogene carbonate build-ups on basement highs\n\nThis presentation will focus on the Miocene to Pliocene submarine foldbelt plays within the Larus Energy-operated PPL579 license area that was covered by the Nanamarope 3D broadband PSDM seismic survey (acquired in 2023 by Larus Energy and Searcher). The pinch-out play is within the recently awarded Larus Energy-operated PPL695 license in the foreland basin south of the foldbelt\, while TotalEnergies is proposing to test the Palaeogene carbonate play with the Mailu-1 well in 2025. \nThe Nanamarope 3D seismic provides high-resolution images of large-scale submarine fan complexes\, deposited during the Mid-Miocene\, linked to active tectonism and the formation of the proto–Owen Stanley Range. The images suggest significant reworking of these turbidite systems by bottom currents into likely high reservoir quality contourite deposits with a wide spectrum of features formed during synchronous and asynchronous interaction of turbidity flows and bottom current activity. It is observed that bottom currents provide a mechanism to redistribute coarser-grained material up-slope and beyond the limits of the traditional turbidite fairway. \nThe new 3D seismic has allowed Larus to complete detailed structural mapping\, update GDE interpretations\, identify evidence for hydrocarbon migration and integrate petroleum systems and seismic synthetic forward modelling to derisk the prospectivity. However\, although well data is lacking\, there is a wealth of geotechnical data covering the Gulf\, allowing for detailed studies to be undertaken\, challenging long-held paradigms about the crustal nature\, regional architecture and hydrocarbon prospectivity. The basin-scale studies can also be integrated into more detailed prospect-level evaluations as new geophysical technologies allow for high-resolution 3D seismic to aid in de-risking perceived risks in source development and reservoir facies\, as observed with the Nanamarope 3D MSS.

SUMMARY:PESA ACT/NSW October Technical Lunch
DESCRIPTION:PESA NSW September Technical Meeting\nMelbana in Cuba: the Amistad-1 success story\nMelbana Energy drilled the Alameda-1 discovery well in onshore Cuba in 2021.  By 2022 the discovery was independently certified by McDaniel (A Canadian based Reserves Certifier with extensive experience in Cuba) to contain over 5 billion barrels of oil in place (best estimate) and 267 million barrels of recoverable oil (best estimate). \nIn 2023 Melbana followed up the Alameda-1 well with the successful Amistad-1 appraisal well which was designed to test the uppermost sheet of reservoirs in the Alameda field (Unit 1A\, 1B\, 2 and 3). \n\nUnit 1A recovered 11.7° API oil with 3\,783 cP viscosity at surface from a 63 metre MD interval starting from 445 metres MD. Although flow rates at surface were not established 40 barrels of oil flowed unassisted to surface (through a 32/64” choke)\, exceeding expectations.\nUnit 3 intercepted 200 metres updip and 500 metres to the south of the Alameda-1 intercept and confirmed moveable oil of a similar quality to Unit 1A. Testing indicated the potential to flow at ~750 bopd. The Unit 2 DST did not demonstrate moveable hydrocarbons to surface at the location tested.\nUnit 1B recovered 19.4° API oil with 5.7 cP viscosity at surface from a 70 metre TVD perforated section – less than 20% of the total Net Pay for Unit 1B (when incorporating fractures). Stabilised unassisted flow rate to surface of 1\,235 bopd measured over 12 hours on a 36/64” choke\, peaking at 1\,903 bopd.\n\nLogged Net Pay for the entire Amistad Formation is 346 metres TVD using 9% porosity\, 50% Sw and 40% VSh cutoffs this  net pay increases to 615 metres when the highly fractured limestones are incorporated (45% of the gross interval). Flow from the fractured interval has been proven by acquisition of production logs validating the incorporation of fractures into the net pay equation. \nUnit 1B has now been completed for future production\, whilst Units 1A and 3 have been suspended for potential future development and production. \nIn March 2024 McDaniel provided a resource update on the Unit 1B; \n\n46 MMbbls (P50) Contingent Resources – Development Pending in the eastern section of the greater Alameda field in the vicinity of the existing wells.\n90 MMbbls (P50) Prospective Resources of assigned in the western part of the field to reflect the uncertainty associated with being away from the existing wells. However\, McDaniels assigned a 70% chance of discovery to the prospective resource reflecting the low- risk nature of this area (given it is updip from the existing discoveries within the field). The risk associated with this area is based on reservoir deliverability.\n\nA preliminary field development plan is being developed for exploitation of Unit1B and an additional two wells focussing purely on production from Unit1B are being planned with the aim of initiating international oil export from Cuba.
