DESCRIPTION:Hosted with thanks to our Platinum Sponsor: \n \nand Gold Sponsor: \n \nand Silver Sponsors: \n \n \n \nand Bronze Sponsor: \n \n\nPESA WA invites you to our technical evening event on Tuesday 17 March at the Shoe Bar:\nStretching or Flexing – A Review of the Triassic from the Northern Carnarvon and Roebuck Basins\nPresented by Alex Maftei (Curtin University)\nIn this technical session\, Alex Maftei will present the results of his giant interpretation effort\, which includes Triassic formation tops for 442 wells within a sequence stratigraphic framework\, at least four key Triassic horizons\, and more than 2300 faults interpreted in an extremely large seismic dataset. This study also incorporates basin-wide structural and isochron maps of the main Triassic sequences\, depth conversion\, and a velocity model that resulted in isopach maps\, establishing the enormous thickness of the Triassic (up to 16 km). Forty wells were backstripped\, and the total and tectonic subsidence were determined. The backstripped thickness at the beginning of the Jurassic was used to evaluate the flexural component of the subsidence (46–73% of the total subsidence). The elastic lithosphere thickness that best fits the data is between 20 and 30 km. The presentation will include notes on the wider development of Triassic volcanism\, stratigraphic observations on the Triassic from the western Exmouth Plateau\, such as a prograding deltaic system and incised valleys at the Ladinian-Carnian boundary\, multi-erosional surfaces\, and canyons in the Norian\, and the earlier development of reefs in the Late Norian. \nTicket Prices: \nMember (Early Bird until 5pm Tuesday 10 March): $40.00 \nMember: $50.00 \nStudent Member: $20.00 \nNon-Member: $60.00 \nEarly bird pricing ends Tuesday 10 March (1 week prior) at 5pm (AWST). The Branch AGM will also be held before the lunch. \nIntroduction\nNet Zero (aka Net Zero Emissions) is a widely used and abused term in today’s environment conscious world. The term has been grabbed by many professions in our developed society to mean many things\, but all about justifying their actions\, pronouncements and member requirements. Industries have been created based on the simple two words. \nQuoting from Wikipedia:\n“The idea of NET ZERO came out f research in the late 2000s into how the atmosphere\, oceans and carbon cycle were reacting to CO2 emissions. This research found that global warming will significantly slow down only if CO2 emissions are reduced to net zero\, although existing greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere will still contribute to continued warming. Net zero was basic to the goals of the Paris Agreement. This stated that the world must “achieve a balance between anthropogenic emissions by sources and removals by sinks of greenhouse gasses in the second half of this century”. The term “net zero” gained popularity after the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change published its Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5 degrees Celsius (SR15). This report stated that “Reaching and sustaining net zero global anthropogenic (human caused) CO2 emissions and declining net non-CO2 radiative forcing would halt anthropogenic global warming on multi-decadal time scales (high confidence).”\nTodays realities \nIn Australia alone\, there are copious seminar papers\, technical journals\, comprehensive books etc written by members of various technical\, legal\, accounting\, engineering and environmental bodies including scientists\, professors\, barristers\, lawyers\, chartered accountants and of course journalists. So much is self-promoting care has to be taken to recognise bias and the need to ensure the individuals remain in paid employment or keep their consulting roles. Having said that it is also fair to say there are some seriously well written and technically supported items that deserve attention from members of bodies such as PESA and SPE. \nMeaning it is important to make up your own mind on the correctness and reasonableness of anything out there meant to be influencing or causing changes in society reactions\, laws and investments. \nQuoting from Wikipedia\n“Net Zero claims vary enormously in how credible they are\, but most have low credibility despite the increasing number of commitments and targets. While 61% of global carbon dioxide emissions are covered by some sort of net zero target\, credible targets cover only 7% of emissions. This low credibility reflects a lack of binding regulation. It is also due to the need for continued innovation and investment to make decarbonisation possible.” \nPESA Presentation \nThis PESA presentation about looking at:\n1/ what really is meant by NET ZERO in a legal\, accounting and recording sense for oil and gas operators. The International Energy Agency has warned that new development of fossil fuels is incompatible with limiting warming to 1.5 Celsius degrees above pre-industrial level\, which was the strongest target that countries signed up to in the 2015 Paris Agreement. \nHowever\, President Donald Trump rejects the evidence for climate change as a “hoax” and has withdrawn the United States from international action on climate change. He is attempting to thwart domestic action and encouraging fossil fuel companies to “drill baby drill”. Should PESA members also pretend that climate change does not exist\, and support President Trump’s goal of American Energy Dominance? Or is there a better option by supporting the development of carbon capture and storage?

DESCRIPTION:PESA SA/NT April Luncheon\nJoint meeting with ASEG SA-NT\nCooper Basin – seismic processing & where it leads …\nPeter Strauss\n  \nAbstract:\nProcessing and interpretation work on the Western Flank of the Cooper Basin indicate that modern land 3D seismic datasets are often not fit-for-purpose when targeting smaller-scale structures. One of the primary objective in this region\, the Namur horizon\, is typically a strong and easily identifiable seismic event. Exploration success therefore depends less on horizon picking and more on accurately positioning wells on genuine structural highs. However\, deeper targets beneath the Namur present greater challenges. In these intervals\, seismic events are often discontinuous and geologically inconsistent\, making both structural interpretation and imaging problematic. \nThis talk highlights two key issues: \nThe structural problem is not new—it was identified in 2D seismic data approximately 30 years ago\, where structural “corrections” were applied. These corrections have not been consistently carried through into modern 3D datasets.\nImaging quality in onshore seismic data is being compromised by the application of processing workflows originally developed for marine 3D seismic. These methods are poorly suited to land data\, where targets are significantly smaller and geological complexity is higher. DESCRIPTION:Joint PESA and SPE Evening Event\nThursday 14 May 2026 (5pm-8pm)\n\n\nThe Bonaparte CCS Project – Mathieu Muller & Paul Froydenlund (INPEX)\nAs part of its Vision 2035\, INPEX is progressing carbon capture and storage (CCS) initiatives to support lower-carbon energy solutions. This presentation will provide an overview of INPEX’s global CCS strategy. It will also highlight the company’s efforts to decarbonise its upstream operations\, including proposed development of the Bonaparte CCS Project – an initiative aimed at providing safe\, permanent offshore CO₂ storage to support emissions reduction. \nThe Integration of Core and FMI Borehole Image Data in Understanding Reservoir Heterogeneity for CCS Studies: West Peron-1 and West Peron-2\, Bonaparte Basin – Fiona Burns (Task Fronterra)\nCore and FMI borehole image data from wells West Peron-1 and West Peron -2 provide a remarkable dataset for gaining insights into reservoir architecture and heterogeneity in the Jurassic to Cretaceous successions of the Bonaparte Basin. Such information is critical in the assessment of suitable sites for the long-term storage of CO2 in the Bonaparte Basin in terms of injectivity potential and movement of the CO2 plume (porosity\, permeability\, lateral and vertical heterogeneity). \nThis talk will focus on the Elang and Frigate formations\, which comprise exceptionally thick successions of deltaic and shallow marine sediments with highly complex depositional histories. The high-resolution FMI data\, calibrated with core\, provides precise information on lithofacies\, depositional environments and sediment-dispersal trends. The FMI data also assists in the interpretation of bedform architecture and channel-fill style. Integrated core and FMI data aids evaluation of the key controls on deposition i.e. river-\, wave & and storm\, – and tidal influences. This talk will summarise the evolution of both the Elang and Frigate formations\, highlighting the dominant controls on deposition of these formations. This approach also provides an invaluable framework in which small-scale features that can cause baffles/barriers to fluid flow can be assessed e.g. tidal clay drapes\, fluid-mud deposits\, types and degrees of bioturbation\, the presence of cemented layers and concretions. \n\nGeomechanical Modelling of Hydrogen Storage at the CO2CRC Otway International Test Centre – Ratih Puspitasari (SLB) with an introduction by Dr Eric Tenthorey (Geoscience Australia)\nAustralia’s emerging hydrogen economy depends on the ability to safely store large quantities of hydrogen underground. As part of the national Exploring for the Future program\, this study assesses the suitability of depleted gas fields for hydrogen storage\, using the CO2CRC Otway International Test Centre as a representative site. \nWith natural gas and CO₂ storage far more extensively characterised\, these systems provide essential reference points for understanding subsurface hydrogen storage behaviour. However\, hydrogen’s distinct density\, viscosity\, compressibility\, and thermal properties mean that established injection and storage practices from these gases cannot be assumed to apply directly. To investigate these differences\, this study presents the first like‑for‑like comparison of hydrogen\, methane\, and carbon dioxide behaviour under identical reservoir conditions. A fully coupled reservoir–geomechanics–thermal model was developed for this purpose\, incorporating high‑resolution wellbore grids to quantify pressure\, temperature\, and stress evolution. \nResults show that hydrogen injection generates significantly lower thermal perturbations than methane or CO₂\, reducing the likelihood of thermally induced fault reactivation and wellbore fracturing. Simulations also demonstrate that moderated injection rates further minimise thermal and pressure impacts\, providing additional operational safeguards. WHY DIDN’T ANYONE\nTELL ME!?\nled by David Grybowski\nSunday 24th May 2026 9am to ~3pm\nFrustrated driving through the Adelaide Hills and still not understanding the Geology?\nThis excursion will familiarize participants with the geological formations\, folds and faults of the Adelaide Hills by orientating the outcrop and faults with the road network and geomorphology. We will go up gullies and gorges from Montecute Road to Morialta to Chambers Gully via Mt Lofty\, where we’ll have a BYO lunch.\n\nLogistics \nThis is a self-drive field trip (carpooling required). There will be 6 stops and 8 drive-by points of interest where stopping is not possible due to limited parking. We will meet at 9:00 am at Morialta Conservation Park (Stradbroke Road car park) and return at approximately 3:00 pm. Optional post-trip drinks (self-funded) at the Tower Hotel. DESCRIPTION:PESA SA/NT May Luncheon\n“Update on Gold Hydrogen’s drilling on the Yorke Peninsula”\n Peter Bubendorfer\nGold Hydrogen\n  \nAbstract:\nGold Hydrogen was started by its founders in 2021 with applications lodged over historic hydrogen shows on Yorke Peninsula and Kangaroo Island. Applications were also lodged over areas of the Adelaide Geosyncline and Murray Basin as well as blocks on the Gawler Craton south of Whyalla. The company listed on the ASX in early 2023 and following the grant of PEL 687 has been a very active pioneering explorer. After flying airborne gravity and magnetics\, in 2023 the company twinned the original Ramsay Oil Bore hydrogen show with Ramsay 1 and 2\, intersecting up to 96% hydrogen and 37% helium\, some of the highest purities ever seen in underground wells. Post drilling\, a 2D seismic survey was carried out and at the end of 2025 two further wells were drilled which confirmed continuity of reservoir. DESCRIPTION:PESA VIC/TAS invites you to our technical luncheon on Tuesday 2nd June at Henry and the Fox\, Melbourne\n“Petroleum geoscience and the energy transition: a personal historical perspective and predictions for the future“\nPresented by Peter Moore (AGC/PESA National Geoscience Champion Lecture Tour 2026)\nThe petroleum industry was technologically advanced by the mid 1900s\, but a number of developments over the last half century stand out in the areas of seismic\, sequence stratigraphy\, assessment technologies\, deepwater plays\, drilling\, offshore developments\, CSG and shale\, which will be discussed\, including from a personal perspective. These developments have served to maintain the competitiveness of the petroleum industry and have satisfied an increasing demand over time. \nHowever\, a key question for the industry is its future role in the evolving energy transition. Analysis is difficult because there are multiple competing narratives and strong vested interests: \nToday we sit at a pivot point\, with a growing divergence of possible energy futures\, depending on how the world balances economic growth\, energy poverty\, geopolitics\, and great power competition against emissions reduction\, fossil fuel elimination and climate change concerns. \nIn the decade since the Paris agreement and despite significant progress\, the 1.5oC goal is lost and fossil fuel’s contribution to energy consumption remains at 80%. \nWhile both sides (fossil fuel supporters and renewable proponents) argue their case\, the next 15 years at least is becoming clearer – a US/China energy and manufacturing divide\, huge growth of renewables but matched by overall energy growth\, the emergence of nuclear\, and the persistence of petroleum\, especially gas. \nDespite trillions of dollars spent on the energy transition\, we have underestimated the difficulty in speedily transitioning the world’s energy and industrial infrastructure\, and have underestimated global growth\, including overall energy consumption. SUMMARY:PESA NSW: June 2026 Technical Lunch
DESCRIPTION:New opportunities for gas exploration in NSW – acreage available first time in a decade \nOn 29 April 2026 the NSW Minister for Natural Resources announced the release of new areas for exploration in the North West of NSW near the South Australian and Queensland borders. They are inviting companies to apply for the grant of exploration tenements over two specific areas (the Bancannia and Pondie Range Troughs) that have previously been identified as prospective for oil and gas. \nPESA has approached the Executive Team for the Minister and we are negotiating the details of the person in that Team to come and provide us updated information on the areas involved\, their prospectivity\, the conditions for the grants and the administrative details required for interested entities. More information on the speaker will be released closer to June 9. \nMeanwhile\, full details of the contents of the Minister’s Press Release are available on the NSW Ministerial media releases website and published on 29 April 2026. One of the key conditions for applicants will be the areas involved will be subject to requirements any gas produced from the areas covered by these newly released EL’s will be reserved for domestic consumption. \nThis is an exciting development and shows the NSW Government are aware of and are taking positive steps to relieve the coming gas shortage in NSW. Recent television interviews have also shown the Minister willingly talking over the Santos Narrabri Project and its progress through the Regulatory Regime\, so discussions at our June 9 meeting are likely to expand beyond the newly released areas for exploration.

DESCRIPTION:PESA WA invites you to a two-day course on Wednesday 10 June and Thursday 11 June at the Shoe Bar\, Yagan Square\, Perth\nIntroduction to Play Mapping\nPresented by: Dr Darren Ferdinando (Basin Science)\n\nObjectives\nThis course is designed to introduce geological play mapping for oil and gas exploration. It is aimed at geoscientists who are interested in applying the concepts of hydrocarbon play mapping to identify areas of high and low prospectivity in terms of the key play elements –\nreservoir\, seal\, trap and charge and using these to identify hydrocarbon potential across scales from permit to basin-wide assessments for quick-screening of new ventures opportunities through to detailed play assessments of core areas. Over two days participants will be shown: \n\nMethodologies for breaking a stratigraphic succession into a series of meaningful and manageable plays with emphasis on using sequence stratigraphic concepts\nWhat comprises the key play elements in a play and how to characterise them\nPost-Drill Assessment of petroleum wells for play mapping\nMapping out Gross Depositional Environments across a play\nVarious styles of play mapping from simple ‘Traffic Light’ mapping through to detailed split risk maps and the scenarios in which they are used\nIntegration of play maps with Prospects and Leads and how to apply various risking schemes (e.g. 4-factor risking\, 5-factor risking etc) to the play mapping\nBasin-wide assessment of multiple plays\nDiscussion of examples of play mapping across several onshore and offshore Australian Basins and the benefits and pitfalls of a variety of play mapping methodologies\n\nContent\nThe process of play mapping incorporates assimilating data from petroleum wells\, seismic data\, sequence stratigraphy\, remoting sensing (magnetic and gravity) data and other sources and combining this data into a spatially meaningful and consistent set of maps that highlight areas of high\, medium and low prospectivity as an aid for exploration. Play mapping can be used in a range of ways from screening large areas for new ventures or gazettal assessments\, determination of areas with lower potential to relinquish in a permit renewal\, or even to identify frontier areas with the high potential to acquire new data across.
