Posamentier\, PhD\nConsultant\n(PESA Distinguished Lecturer)\nThis PESA Distinguished Lecture is made possible with the generous support of Santos Ltd. \n  \nObjectives\nThis course is designed to enhance interpretation skill sets with regard to geologic interpretation of seismic data. The overall objective is to present seismic interpretation methods/workflows focused on seismic stratigraphy integrated with seismic geomorphology\, aimed at reducing risk with regard to prediction of lithology\, reservoir compartmentalization\, and stratigraphic trapping potential in exploration and production. Specifically\, the participant will be shown: \n\nworkflows designed to facilitate extraction of stratigraphic insights from 3D seismic data\ntechniques for 3D seismic geomorphologic/stratigraphic analyses\nnumerous examples of various depositional systems in various depositional settings (i.e.\, fluvial\, marginal marine\, deep-water\, shallow-water carbonates)\nintegration of sequence stratigraphic concepts\ndiscussion\, with examples\, of pitfalls in interpretation\n\nContent\nThe application of seismic geomorphology and seismic stratigraphy to exploration and field development is a natural consequence of the advent of high-quality and increasingly more affordable and widespread 3D seismic data currently available. Integrating analyses of plan view (geomorphologic) and section view (stratigraphic) images can significantly enhance predictions of the spatial and temporal distribution of subsurface lithology (reservoir\, source\, and seal)\, compartmentalization\, and stratigraphic trapping capabilities\, as well as enhanced understanding of process sedimentology and sequence stratigraphy. \nParticipants in the course will be exposed to seismic geomorphologic/stratigraphic workflows\, which involve 1) initial reconnaissance through 3D volumes with various slicing techniques using a variety of different seismic attribute volumes including full stack reflection amplitudes\, near and far stacked amplitude volumes\, and coherence volumes\, as well as opacity rendering\, 2) focus on features of geologic interest and further investigate through a combination of detailed slicing\, interval attributes\, horizon picking and amplitude extraction\, horizon illumination\, etc.\, and 3) comprehensive integration of seismic geomorphologic analyses with seismic stratigraphic analyses\, whereby the plan view is integrated with the section view to ensure a consistent interpretation. 4) integration and application of sequence stratigraphic concepts to facilitate data interpretation. \nCourse lectures will involve both PowerPoint presentations as well as interactive demonstrations of the interpretation of 3D seismic data. DESCRIPTION:PESA SA/NT  November Luncheon\nRecent applications of seismic geomorphology/stratigraphy: Deep-water deposits of the Bay of Bengal and the Norwegian Sea\nHenry Posamentier\n(PESA Distinguished Lecturer)\n  \nAbstract:\nThis presentation will document the seismic stratigraphic and seismic geomorphologic expressions of deep-water deposits of the Bay of Bengal and the Norwegian Sea. They comprise both turbidites as well as mass transport deposits. The turbidite deposits from the Bay of Bengal include leveed channel complexes\, terminal fans\, and overbank sediment waves. With respect to terminal fans\, there are those that terminate basinward of leveed channel systems and are relatively large\, and those that are deposited late within a lowstand cycle of deposition and are confined between the levees of precursor larger channels\, and are relatively small. Intra-basinal channels (i.e.\, channels that start and end on the basin floor) are observed within abandoned meander loops as well as interchannel overbank terrains. These intra-basinal channels are characterized by low sinuosity and likely are mud-filled with no exploration potential. \nMass transport deposits from the Norwegian Sea include flows\, slumps\, and slides\, as well as isolated outrunner blocks. These deposits are associated with significant substate erosion up to 250m. The outrunner blocks are observed in clusters\, generally in radiating patterns down-system. Some of the outrunner blocks at the termini of erosional furrows are associated with sediment tails orthogonal to the direction of transport\, indicating bottom current direction from southwest to northeast. In addition\, volcanic intrusive deposits will be documented. These intrusives comprise both dikes and sills. Once registered with the webinar software you will receive a reminder e-mail 1 hour beforehand. \nNew Insights into Depositional Modelling of the Permian Kingia Sandstone in the Perth Basin Using Ichnology\nPresented by Dr Fiona Burns (Task Fronterra) \nAbstract \n\nHistorically\, sedimentological interpretations of the Kingia Sandstone in the northern Perth Basin have relied heavily upon conventional sedimentary facies analysis of a limited dataset integrating core with well-log data. This paper however provides invaluable insights into the high-resolution depositional modelling of the Kingia Sandstone using sedimentary facies analysis integrated with detailed ichnological studies. Historic cored wells have also been re-evaluated utilising an ichnological approach\, while newly released cored wells have been interpreted\, also using this integrated approach. Cores from a variety of wells including but not limited to West Erreguella-4\, South Erreguella-1\, Mountain Bridge-1\, Corybas-1\, Waitsia-1\, Waitsia-2 and Waitsia-3 have been included in this study. \nThe results allow the subdivision of the Kinga Sandstone into numerous sub-environments reflecting marginal to fully marine  sub-environments. The Kinga sandstone is interpreted to represent deposition in a wave-dominated deltaic system\, with trace-fossil assemblages key to the evaluation of stress levels (e.g. freshwater dilution) in the system. Local sharp-based shoreface packages\, abruptly overlying shelfal deposits\, are interpreted to represent forced regressive events during overall highstand progradation of the Kingia shoreface system.

DESCRIPTION:Australia is endowed with abundant\, high-quality energy commodity resources\, which provide reliable energy for domestic use and underpin our status as a major global energy provider. \nThese resources make a substantial contribution to the nation’s gross domestic product and export earnings. Geoscience Australia (GA) has a long history of supporting the nation’s energy sector\, delivering independent geoscientific advice and data to underpin informed decision-making regarding Australia’s energy resources across government\, industry\, and the community. \nA key piece of work than informs this function is the annual publication Australia’s Energy Commodity Resources (AECR). To set the scene\, this talk will introduce the recently published AECR2025 publication before presenting an overview of GA’s current energy program. \nUnder the Resourcing Australia’s Prosperity initiative\, GA is focusing on low carbon energy resources that will help Australia achieve net zero. The forward program includes mapping and assessing geological capacity for CO₂ storage (both onshore and offshore)\, identifying potential hydrogen storage sites\, and evaluating natural hydrogen resources. These activities draw on GA’s expertise and existing data to provide new insights and lower investment risk in new resource developments.

Posamentier\nThis presentation will document the seismic stratigraphic and seismic geomorphologic expressions of deep-water deposits of the Bay of Bengal and the Norwegian Sea. They comprise both turbidites as well as mass transport deposits. The turbidite deposits from the Bay of Bengal include leveed channel complexes\, terminal fans\, and overbank sediment waves. With respect to terminal fans\, there are those that terminate basinward of leveed channel systems and are relatively large\, and those that are deposited late within a lowstand cycle of deposition and are confined between the levees of precursor larger channels\, and are relatively small. Intra-basinal channels (i.e.\, channels that start and end on the basin floor) are observed within abandoned meander loops as well as interchannel overbank terrains. These intra-basinal channels are characterized by low sinuosity and likely are mud-filled with no exploration potential.  \nMass transport deposits from the Norwegian Sea include flows\, slumps\, and slides\, as well as isolated outrunner blocks. These deposits are associated with significant substate erosion up to 250m. The outrunner blocks are observed in clusters\, generally in radiating patterns down-system. Some of the outrunner blocks at the termini of erosional furrows are associated with sediment tails orthogonal to the direction of transport\, indicating bottom current direction from southwest to northeast. In addition\, volcanic intrusive deposits will be documented. These intrusives comprise both dikes and sills. SUMMARY:PESA SA/NT November Luncheon : Moomba CCS
DESCRIPTION:PESA SA/NT  November Luncheon\nMoomba CCS – delivering a world leading CO2 storage project\nAnthony Western (Santos)\n  \nAbstract:\nThe Moomba Carbon Capture and Storage project is a large-scale CCS project at the Moomba Gas Plant in the Cooper Basin\, South Australia. New facilities were constructed to capture\, dehydrate\, transport and permanently store CO2 emissions that were previously vented to atmosphere and depleted gas fields were selected as the initial storage reservoirs. Five new injection wells were drilled\, and existing wells were re-purposed as monitoring wells to enable the Monitoring and Verification (M&V) plan including environmental assurance monitoring. \nThe Moomba CCS project commenced operations in September 2024 and by June 2025 had safely captured and permanently stored more than 1.0 million tonnes of CO2 emissions. The wells and storage reservoir are performing as expected and monitoring wells are seeing signs of CO2 injection in line with reservoir model predictions. At 1.7 Mtpa CO2e\, it is one of the largest CCS projects in the world and its successful startup and early performance has enabled future CCS growth in the Cooper Basin. \nThis presentation will give an overview of the Moomba CCS project and share some of the results to date\, with a focus on subsurface scope. \n\nEvent Details:\nThursday 20th November 2025 \nLuncheon: 12 pm for a 12:30 pm start \nPlace: Ayer’s House\, 288 North Tce\, Adelaide \nThe luncheon will consist of 2 courses and drinks \nBookings close 5 pm Monday\, 17th Nov 2025 \nAny late bookings will incur an additional $20 fee. DESCRIPTION:PESA (SA/NT) Core/GDE Mapping Workshop:\nA fresh look at South Australia’s Warburton Basin\, Daralingie Shelf Area\nChris Cubitt\nSA Drill Core Reference Library\, Tonsley\n  \nNovember 21st 2025 (Friday)\n8:30am – 4pm\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n  \nFollowing the success of previous core workshop\, PESA SA/NT is pleased to announce this year’s full-day core workshop at the South Australia Drill Core Reference Library in Tonsley on Friday 21st November 08.30am – 4.00pm. \nThis year’s workshop takes a quick look at a diverse set of cores from the Warburton Basin\, Daralingie Shelf area\, focusing on generating gross depositional environment (GDE) concepts and prospectivity. \nChris Cubitt will host the workshop with participants first gaining an understanding of key cores with focus on defining depositional concepts. Subsequently\, in the afternoon teams will be encouraged to start building GDE concepts to guide seismic-based GDE mapping seismic. A final discussion on prospectivity and play concepts will wrap up the day. \nThe workshop will finish around 4.00pm\, with an optional stop at the Mantra Tonsley Hotel. \nWho should attend? Once registered with the webinar software you will receive a reminder e-mail 1 hour beforehand. \nKenmore: A Case Study for Static Modelling in a Mature Oil Field\nPresented by Talline Zarzavatjian \nAbstract \n\nThe Kenmore field\, located in the Cooper-Eromanga Basin\, has been producing oil since 1985 and is moving into late field life. At the time of the project several work-over opportunities existed in the field\, with Kenmore-43\, a previously cased and suspended but yet to be completed well\, identified as one of the best candidates to potentially improve field production. Focusing on the Jurassic Basal Birkhead and Hutton intervals\, a geological model was built to capture a range of possible static outcomes\, test each case dynamically and once matched\, forecast the potential production if Kenmore-43 were to be perforated. The modelling work was closely integrated with the simulation results and was continuously refined to obtain the best possible history match. In all cases that achieved a match\, Kenmore-43 was identified as a viable economic opportunity which followed through with a very successful workover. The project highlighted the value of integrated static and dynamic modelling and how this not only improves understanding of the field but also has wider implications for other opportunities both within Kenmore and analogous fields in the basin.

DESCRIPTION:Hosted with thanks to our Platinum Sponsor: \n \nand Gold Sponsor: \n \nand Silver Sponsors: \n \n \n \nand Bronze Sponsor: \n \n\nPESA WA invites you to our technical evening event on Tuesday 17 March at the Shoe Bar:\nStretching or Flexing – A Review of the Triassic from the Northern Carnarvon and Roebuck Basins\nPresented by Alex Maftei (Curtin University)\nIn this technical session\, Alex Maftei will present the results of his giant interpretation effort\, which includes Triassic formation tops for 442 wells within a sequence stratigraphic framework\, at least four key Triassic horizons\, and more than 2300 faults interpreted in an extremely large seismic dataset. This study also incorporates basin-wide structural and isochron maps of the main Triassic sequences\, depth conversion\, and a velocity model that resulted in isopach maps\, establishing the enormous thickness of the Triassic (up to 16 km). Forty wells were backstripped\, and the total and tectonic subsidence were determined. The backstripped thickness at the beginning of the Jurassic was used to evaluate the flexural component of the subsidence (46–73% of the total subsidence). The elastic lithosphere thickness that best fits the data is between 20 and 30 km. The presentation will include notes on the wider development of Triassic volcanism\, stratigraphic observations on the Triassic from the western Exmouth Plateau\, such as a prograding deltaic system and incised valleys at the Ladinian-Carnian boundary\, multi-erosional surfaces\, and canyons in the Norian\, and the earlier development of reefs in the Late Norian. \nTicket Prices: \nMember (Early Bird until 5pm Tuesday 10 March): $40.00 \nMember: $50.00 \nStudent Member: $20.00 \nNon-Member: $60.00 \nEarly bird pricing ends Tuesday 10 March (1 week prior) at 5pm (AWST). The Branch AGM will also be held before the lunch. \nIntroduction\nNet Zero (aka Net Zero Emissions) is a widely used and abused term in today’s environment conscious world. The term has been grabbed by many professions in our developed society to mean many things\, but all about justifying their actions\, pronouncements and member requirements. Industries have been created based on the simple two words. \nQuoting from Wikipedia:\n“The idea of NET ZERO came out f research in the late 2000s into how the atmosphere\, oceans and carbon cycle were reacting to CO2 emissions. This research found that global warming will significantly slow down only if CO2 emissions are reduced to net zero\, although existing greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere will still contribute to continued warming. Net zero was basic to the goals of the Paris Agreement. This stated that the world must “achieve a balance between anthropogenic emissions by sources and removals by sinks of greenhouse gasses in the second half of this century”. The term “net zero” gained popularity after the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change published its Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5 degrees Celsius (SR15). This report stated that “Reaching and sustaining net zero global anthropogenic (human caused) CO2 emissions and declining net non-CO2 radiative forcing would halt anthropogenic global warming on multi-decadal time scales (high confidence).”\nTodays realities \nIn Australia alone\, there are copious seminar papers\, technical journals\, comprehensive books etc written by members of various technical\, legal\, accounting\, engineering and environmental bodies including scientists\, professors\, barristers\, lawyers\, chartered accountants and of course journalists. So much is self-promoting care has to be taken to recognise bias and the need to ensure the individuals remain in paid employment or keep their consulting roles. Having said that it is also fair to say there are some seriously well written and technically supported items that deserve attention from members of bodies such as PESA and SPE. \nMeaning it is important to make up your own mind on the correctness and reasonableness of anything out there meant to be influencing or causing changes in society reactions\, laws and investments. \nQuoting from Wikipedia\n“Net Zero claims vary enormously in how credible they are\, but most have low credibility despite the increasing number of commitments and targets. While 61% of global carbon dioxide emissions are covered by some sort of net zero target\, credible targets cover only 7% of emissions. This low credibility reflects a lack of binding regulation. It is also due to the need for continued innovation and investment to make decarbonisation possible.” \nPESA Presentation \nThis PESA presentation about looking at:\n1/ what really is meant by NET ZERO in a legal\, accounting and recording sense for oil and gas operators.
