This study presents a pedagogical framework that integrates technical\, environmental\, and policy perspectives to support interdisciplinary sustainability education. Focusing on case studies from the United Kingdom and Türkiye\, it explores how different lithium extraction pathways influence water consumption\, water scarcity\, and overall environmental sustainability across contrasting geological and regulatory contexts. \nIn the UK\, lithium extraction is derived from both primary hard rock sources\, such as lepidolite-bearing granites in Cornwall\, and secondary geothermal brines. In Türkiye\, the emphasis is on geothermal lithium production using Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) methods\, including adsorption\, ion exchange\, and membrane technologies. These approaches are compared with conventional evaporation-based techniques\, which involve prolonged processing times and significant water loss. \nUsing water footprint assessment\, the study evaluates total and freshwater use\, brine abstraction\, and associated environmental risks. By integrating insights from literature\, industry\, and policy sources\, the project highlights trade-offs between extraction efficiency and water impacts. The resulting framework supports the development of interdisciplinary skills and aligns sustainability education with emerging industrial and policy needs. \nBuilding on outputs from a Global Engagement Fund project and associated student research\, This work provides an adaptable\, practice‑oriented approach for strengthening sustainability‑focused education. It highlights opportunities for aligning curricula with emerging industrial\, environmental\, and societal needs.

DESCRIPTION:PESA SA/NT October Luncheon\n“Geological CO₂ Storage: Familiar Subsurface\, Different Questions”\nDr. Katherine Romanak\nThe University of Texas at Austin’s Bureau of Economic Geology \n  \nAbstract \nGeological CO₂ Storage: Familiar Subsurface\, Different Questions \nPetroleum geoscientists come to CO₂ storage with a powerful advantage: the rocks\, wells\, fluids and subsurface tools are familiar. But CCS can change the meaning of familiar observations—and sometimes reverse the questions we are accustomed to asking. Injection is not simply production done backwards. When is migration expected\, and when is it a containment concern? Does movement outside a predicted plume represent failure? Can there be environmental impact without CO₂ leakage? And when does a storage issue become a reportable emission? This presentation will explore where petroleum experience transfers directly to geological CO₂ storage and where familiar concepts need to be reconsidered. Drawing on examples from storage projects\, monitoring research\, and controlled-release experiments\, it will distinguish three objectives that are often unintentionally conflated: demonstrating containment\, protecting the environment\, and accounting for emissions. The central argument is simple: before deciding what to monitor\, we must first be clear about the question the monitoring is meant to answer. DESCRIPTION:PESA SA/NT August Luncheon\n“Petroleum geoscience and the energy transition: \na personal historical perspective and predictions for the future”\nDr Peter Moore\n\n  \nAbstract:\nThe petroleum industry was technologically advanced by the mid 1900s\, but a number of developments over the last half century stand out in the areas of seismic\, sequence stratigraphy\, assessment technologies\, deepwater plays\, drilling\, offshore developments\, CSG and shale\, which will be discussed\, including from a personal perspective. These developments have served to maintain the competitiveness of the petroleum industry and have satisfied an increasing demand over time. \nHowever\, a key question for the industry is its future role in the evolving energy transition. Analysis is difficult because there are multiple competing narratives and strong vested interests. \nToday we sit at a pivot point\, with a growing divergence of possible energy futures\, depending on how the world balances economic growth\, energy poverty\, geopolitics\, and great power competition against emissions reduction\, fossil fuel elimination and climate change concerns. \nIn the decade since the Paris agreement and despite significant progress\, the 1.5oC goal is lost and fossil fuel’s contribution to energy consumption remains at 80%. \nWhile both sides (fossil fuel supporters and renewable proponents) argue their case\, the next 15 years at least is becoming clearer – a US/China energy and manufacturing divide\, huge growth of renewables but matched by overall energy growth\, the emergence of nuclear\, and the persistence of petroleum\, especially gas. \nDespite trillions of dollars spent on the energy transition\, we have underestimated the difficulty in speedily transitioning the world’s energy and industrial infrastructure\, and have underestimated global growth\, including overall energy consumption. This can be seen by comparing predictions and model outcomes published over the last decade. \nFor today’s petroleum geoscientists\, technology and jobs will continue to evolve while new areas are likely to include advanced geothermal\, CCS\, and potentially natural hydrogen. DESCRIPTION:D3 Energy is a natural gas and helium developer listed on the Australian Securities Exchange on 13 May 2024. \nIts cornerstone asset is Exploration Right ER315 in South Africa’s Free State Province\, a major onshore permit covering approximately 811 km²\, and situated immediately east of Renergen Limited’s producing Virginia Gas Project. \nInitial drilling across ER315 has delivered world-class helium concentrations exceeding 5%\, confirming the Company’s geological model and establishing the region as a globally significant helium province. \nThis exploration success has since been reinforced by substantial regulatory and technical progress. The Company has completed a maiden reserve certification over part of ER315\, defining 1P reserves of 7.21 BCF and supporting its Production Right Application\, which has now been formally accepted by South Africa’s Petroleum Agency (PASA). \nIn addition to ER315\, D3 holds multiple permits in South Africa\, including ER386\, TCP 273\, ER391\, ER392 and ER393 bringing its total landholding in the region to just under 2000 km². These assets are defined by their low-cost nature and high prospectivity\, making exploration and development economically competitive. \nIn June 2025\, D3 Energy expanded into Australia\, securing PEL 121 and PEL 122 in the Arckaringa Basin\, South Australia. These permits\, covering ~5\,865 km²\, mark a strategic entry into a frontier basin with growing interest in helium and clean hydrogen exploration. Since acquisition\, the Company has also commenced farm-out discussions for the Hydrohelix prospect to support future drilling activity. \nD3 Energy now operates in two geographies\, South Africa and Australia\, with a dual-hemisphere portfolio targeting critical energy and industrial gases. \nIn South Africa\, the Company’s work is vital in a region facing severe energy shortages. Generated naturally by geological processes within the Earth\, hydrogen may migrate through the subsurface and accumulate in geological reservoirs. Growing exploration activity\, new drilling programs and evolving regulatory frameworks have attracted increasing interest from the energy\, resources and investment communities. \nThis webinar will provide a general introduction to natural hydrogen and an overview of the current state of this emerging industry. Once registered with the webinar software you will receive a reminder e-mail 1 hour beforehand. \nHybrid Contourite-Turbidite Systems from the Guyana-Suriname & Cote d’Ivoire-Ghana Deep Water Margins: Impact on Slope Channel Complex Stacking\, Frontal Splay Stacking\, Mass-Wasting\, Stratigraphic Trapping\, and Field Development and Planning\nPresented by Bryan Cronin \nAbstract: \n\nDeep-water slope and proximal basin floor turbidite systems along both the Guyana-Suriname and Cote d’Ivoire-Ghanaian margins have been strongly affected by contour currents since the latest Lower Cretaceous. These contour currents were (and are) usually counter-directional to surface ocean currents and longshore drift patterns that so strongly affect the distribution and movement of sand on the modern and geological pene-contemporaneous shelf areas. The latter longshore vector of sediment transport has thought to be the principal agent for sediment reworking\, sorting by mechanical segregation and movement towards the heads of deep-water systems in both areas\, with the wider shelfal areas contributing more to the reservoir-grade material going through the ‘spin cycle’ that ultimately controls primary fabric when it is resedimented through channels onto the slope and into deeper water. In the northern Gulf of Guinea\, the sediment transport is and was to the east\, whereas offshore Guyana and Suriname it was primarily to the west. \nContour currents\, however\, move in the opposite direction in slope and proximal basin floor settings. These currents impact on the down-slope moving turbidity currents by dislocating the fine suspended load from the flows and depositing them as sediment drifts or enlarged levees or sediment wave fields (or a combination of both) on the western sides of deep-water systems in the northern Gulf of Guinea\, and the eastern parts of deep-water systems on the Guyana-Suriname margin. The impact is profound. Slope channel complexes that are the principal feeder systems to lobe systems outboard on both margins have highly asymmetrical constructional levees in the contour current direction\, and subdued levees in the opposite direction. This impacts on slope channel complex behaviour by showing a steady westward or eastward stacking of the complexes (only one is active at any one time)\, in the direction of the subdued levee. Channel stacking patterns also reflect this asymmetry\, with systematic high-angle lateral offset stack of reservoir channel elements towards the subdued levee. The second impact of the contour current generated asymmetric levee/flanking sediment drift fields is to increase local slope gradients at and near the levee crests\, and this generates lateral channel complex margin collapse into the channel beltways (the highest gradient in the area\, higher than the background slope gradient). It also promotes largescale MTD wasting of the outer levee flanks\, and all slope channel complexes have associated MTDs on the same levee flanks (eastern on the Guyana-Suriname channel complexes for example). \nThe third impact of this channel complex asymmetry because of progressive stacking of channel elements within the beltway\, and progressive stacking of the entire channel complexes in the same direction\, is a mirrored progressive stacking of the outboard lobe complexes\, both on intra slope terraces and on the basin floor. The overall behaviour is completely contour to notions of accommodation space controlling systematic stacking of deep-water channels and lobe complexes. \nExploration\, development and production from a range of prospects and operating fields along both conjugate margins has yielded a fascinating repository of these types of behaviour from mixed turbidite-contourite settings that extend the observations seen on lobe shifting in the Rovuma Basin offshore Mozambique\, and indeed outboard towards the Comoros. Designing line-developed injector-producer wells has necessitated very high angle well design predicated by the channel or lobe element stacking direction to maximise the sand face along hole\, and this has been entirely as a result of the mixed turbidite-contourite influenced behaviour of the slope channel complexes and both intraslope and basin floor lobe complexes. The subsea infrastructure architecture: location of manifolds and the like\, again controlled by the original geology\, needs early alignment to capture the program and reduce cost of facility design and well trajectory complexity.

DESCRIPTION:Petroleum Geoscience and the Energy Transition: A Personal Historical Perspective and Predictions for the Future \nAn historical perspective on important advances that Dr Peter Moore has been witness to\, and continuation of the story into the future around the emergence of non-fossil-fuel energy sources and the likely ongoing roles of geoscientists. \nThe petroleum industry was technologically advanced by the mid 1900s\, but a number of developments over the last half century stand out in the areas of seismic\, sequence stratigraphy\, assessment technologies\, deepwater plays\, drilling\, offshore developments\, CSG and shale\, which will be discussed\, including from a personal perspective. These developments have served to maintain the competitiveness of the petroleum industry and have satisfied an increasing demand over time. \nHowever\, a key question for the industry is its future role in the evolving energy transition. Analysis is difficult because there are multiple competing narratives and strong vested interests. \nToday we sit at a pivot point\, with a growing divergence of possible energy futures\, depending on how the world balances economic growth\, energy poverty\, geopolitics\, and great power competition against emissions reduction\, fossil fuel elimination and climate change concerns. \nIn the decade since the Paris agreement and despite significant progress\, the 1.5oC goal is lost and fossil fuel’s contribution to energy consumption remains at 80%. \nWhile both sides (fossil fuel supporters and renewable proponents) argue their case\, the next 15 years at least is becoming clearer – a US/China energy and manufacturing divide\, huge growth of renewables but matched by overall energy growth\, the emergence of nuclear\, and the persistence of petroleum\, especially gas. \nDespite trillions of dollars spent on the energy transition\, we have underestimated the difficulty in speedily transitioning the world’s energy and industrial infrastructure\, and have underestimated global growth\, including overall energy consumption. This can be seen by comparing predictions and model outcomes published over the last decade. \nFor today’s petroleum geoscientists\, technology and jobs will continue to evolve while new areas are likely to include advanced geothermal\, CCS\, and potentially natural hydrogen. As fields decline and new developments and discoveries become smaller\, more effort and technology is required from petroleum companies and individuals to deliver the energy the world still demands.

DESCRIPTION:PESA WA is excited to invite you to our second Core Values Session for 2026 on Friday 26 June at the Perth Core Library:\nHarvey Field Cores\nPresented by Cedric Griffiths (StrataMod Pty Ltd)\n\nThe cores will be used to re-examine the assumptions behind the CSIRO 2011/12 Sedsim forward stratigraphic model of Permian/Early Triassic sediment depositional environment which was run prior to obtaining the Harvey-1 well results. \nPrior to the drilling of Harvey-1 Schlumberger had developed a depositional concept model that assumed most of the sediment being transported westwards from the Darling Scarp in the form of alluvial fans. \nThe Sedsim model had most of the sediment being provided by a large river system from the south\, sourced from Antarctic mountain sources prior to break-up\, with minor input from the eastern fault block after “Tectonic and Stratigraphic History of the Perth Basin\, Norvick\, M.S. DESCRIPTION:PESA QLD June Luncheon\n\nGeological structures and aquifer connectivity in the Great Artesian Basin and underlying Permian-Triassic basins: insights from airborne electromagnetic surveys\, hydrochemistry and environmental tracers at Narrabri\, NSW\nPresented by: Dr Matthias Raiber\n(Principal Research Scientist at CSIRO)\n  \nAbstract: \nIn the Narrabri region\, understanding connectivity between coal seam gas (CSG) reservoirs and overlying aquifers is important for assessing potential groundwater impacts and addressing community concerns\, given that the Gunnedah Basin\, which hosts the coal seams\, underlies key Great Artesian Basin (GAB) units such as the Pilliga Sandstone. \nThis study applies an integrated workflow combining airborne electromagnetics (SkyTEM)\, seismic interpretation\, K/Ar dating of igneous intrusions\, and hydrochemical and environmental tracer datasets (including noble gases and groundwater age tracers). The SkyTEM survey (~2\,765 line km; >60 flight lines) provides high-resolution constraints on subsurface architecture\, enabling mapping of faults\, intrusions\, and key stratigraphic boundaries to ~400 m depth. \nAEM results and K/Ar ages of intrusive activity were integrated with seismic and geological data to develop conceptual hydrogeological models identifying potential connectivity pathways. Hydrochemical and tracer data were then used to test for evidence of hydraulic connection across formations and basins\, allowing structural interpretations to be evaluated against groundwater signatures. \nResults indicate that geological structures are widespread\, but their hydraulic significance and therefore their potential influence on connectivity varies across the study area. \nThe presentation focuses on the Narrabri Gas Project area while also addressing broader GAB connectivity questions. While the largest gas fields in the Cooper Basin were found early\, this pattern does not hold for oil in the Eromanga Basin. The Western Flank oil discoveries followed the entry of new operators and new licences. Despite the basins’ maturity\, some areas remain underexplored\, for example\, the Nappamerri Trough has no dedicated oil wells despite being similar in size to the Western Flank. These relationships are important as they provide a potential mechanism for predicting channel body dimensions from one-dimensional subsurface datasets such as wireline logs or core. Scaling relationships can also aid in reducing uncertainty associated with estimating fluvial channel body width in the rock record\, which\, for a given thickness can vary by between 2 and 5 orders of magnitude.\nLinking present day channel and channel belt dimensions to preserved channel belt sandstone bodies is difficult\, as preserved channel belt stacking patterns are not easily observed in modern day basins. Stacking patterns are related to spatial location in basins and the type of fluvial depositional systems (distributive\, axial or valley). I will show how dimensional data can vary depending on the type of different fluvial depositional systems. Whilst dimensional data from modern day channels and channel belts are not directly transferable to the preserved rock record\, this approach does provide generic relationships that could potentially form the basis for more accurately predicting sandstone body dimensions for subsurface fluid extraction and/or storage.

DESCRIPTION:New opportunities for gas exploration in NSW – acreage available first time in a decade \nOn 29 April 2026 the NSW Minister for Natural Resources announced the release of new areas for exploration in the North West of NSW near the South Australian and Queensland borders. They are inviting companies to apply for the grant of exploration tenements over two specific areas (the Bancannia and Pondie Range Troughs) that have previously been identified as prospective for oil and gas. \nFull details of the contents of the Minister’s Press Release are available on the NSW Ministerial media releases website and published on 29 April 2026. One of the key conditions for applicants will be the areas involved will be subject to requirements any gas produced from the areas covered by these newly released EL’s will be reserved for domestic consumption. \nThis is an exciting development and shows the NSW Government are aware of and are taking positive steps to relieve the coming gas shortage in NSW. DESCRIPTION:PESA VIC/TAS invites you to our technical luncheon on Tuesday 2nd June at Henry and the Fox\, Melbourne\n“Petroleum geoscience and the energy transition: a personal historical perspective and predictions for the future“\nPresented by Peter Moore (AGC/PESA National Geoscience Champion Lecture Tour 2026)\nThe petroleum industry was technologically advanced by the mid 1900s\, but a number of developments over the last half century stand out in the areas of seismic\, sequence stratigraphy\, assessment technologies\, deepwater plays\, drilling\, offshore developments\, CSG and shale\, which will be discussed\, including from a personal perspective. These developments have served to maintain the competitiveness of the petroleum industry and have satisfied an increasing demand over time. \nHowever\, a key question for the industry is its future role in the evolving energy transition. Analysis is difficult because there are multiple competing narratives and strong vested interests: \nToday we sit at a pivot point\, with a growing divergence of possible energy futures\, depending on how the world balances economic growth\, energy poverty\, geopolitics\, and great power competition against emissions reduction\, fossil fuel elimination and climate change concerns. \nIn the decade since the Paris agreement and despite significant progress\, the 1.5oC goal is lost and fossil fuel’s contribution to energy consumption remains at 80%. \nWhile both sides (fossil fuel supporters and renewable proponents) argue their case\, the next 15 years at least is becoming clearer – a US/China energy and manufacturing divide\, huge growth of renewables but matched by overall energy growth\, the emergence of nuclear\, and the persistence of petroleum\, especially gas. \nDespite trillions of dollars spent on the energy transition\, we have underestimated the difficulty in speedily transitioning the world’s energy and industrial infrastructure\, and have underestimated global growth\, including overall energy consumption. This can be seen by comparing predictions and model outcomes published over the last decade. \nFor today’s petroleum geoscientists\, technology and jobs will continue to evolve while new areas are likely to include advanced geothermal\, CCS\, and potentially natural hydrogen. DESCRIPTION:PESA SA/NT May Luncheon\n“Update on Gold Hydrogen’s drilling on the Yorke Peninsula”\n Peter Bubendorfer\nGold Hydrogen\n  \nAbstract:\nGold Hydrogen was started by its founders in 2021 with applications lodged over historic hydrogen shows on Yorke Peninsula and Kangaroo Island. Applications were also lodged over areas of the Adelaide Geosyncline and Murray Basin as well as blocks on the Gawler Craton south of Whyalla. The company listed on the ASX in early 2023 and following the grant of PEL 687 has been a very active pioneering explorer. After flying airborne gravity and magnetics\, in 2023 the company twinned the original Ramsay Oil Bore hydrogen show with Ramsay 1 and 2\, intersecting up to 96% hydrogen and 37% helium\, some of the highest purities ever seen in underground wells. Post drilling\, a 2D seismic survey was carried out and at the end of 2025 two further wells were drilled which confirmed continuity of reservoir.
