SUMMARY:PESA NSW: April 2026 Technical Lunch
DESCRIPTION:Net Zero\nPESA NSW invite you to our technical luncheon. Presented by Max Williamson. The Branch AGM will also be held before the lunch. \nIntroduction\nNet Zero (aka Net Zero Emissions) is a widely used and abused term in today’s environment conscious world. The term has been grabbed by many professions in our developed society to mean many things\, but all about justifying their actions\, pronouncements and member requirements. Industries have been created based on the simple two words. \nQuoting from Wikipedia:\n“The idea of NET ZERO came out f research in the late 2000s into how the atmosphere\, oceans and carbon cycle were reacting to CO2 emissions. This research found that global warming will significantly slow down only if CO2 emissions are reduced to net zero\, although existing greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere will still contribute to continued warming. Net zero was basic to the goals of the Paris Agreement. This stated that the world must “achieve a balance between anthropogenic emissions by sources and removals by sinks of greenhouse gasses in the second half of this century”. The term “net zero” gained popularity after the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change published its Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5 degrees Celsius (SR15). This report stated that “Reaching and sustaining net zero global anthropogenic (human caused) CO2 emissions and declining net non-CO2 radiative forcing would halt anthropogenic global warming on multi-decadal time scales (high confidence).”\nTodays realities \nIn Australia alone\, there are copious seminar papers\, technical journals\, comprehensive books etc written by members of various technical\, legal\, accounting\, engineering and environmental bodies including scientists\, professors\, barristers\, lawyers\, chartered accountants and of course journalists. So much is self-promoting care has to be taken to recognise bias and the need to ensure the individuals remain in paid employment or keep their consulting roles. Having said that it is also fair to say there are some seriously well written and technically supported items that deserve attention from members of bodies such as PESA and SPE. \nMeaning it is important to make up your own mind on the correctness and reasonableness of anything out there meant to be influencing or causing changes in society reactions\, laws and investments. \nQuoting from Wikipedia\n“Net Zero claims vary enormously in how credible they are\, but most have low credibility despite the increasing number of commitments and targets. While 61% of global carbon dioxide emissions are covered by some sort of net zero target\, credible targets cover only 7% of emissions. This low credibility reflects a lack of binding regulation. It is also due to the need for continued innovation and investment to make decarbonisation possible.” \nPESA Presentation \nThis PESA presentation about looking at:\n1/ what really is meant by NET ZERO in a legal\, accounting and recording sense for oil and gas operators. More particularly defining both aspects of the costs/debits imposed by emissions on the one hand and the credits such as carbon credits; and\n2/ various positions of the more public participants\, determining any bias factors\, discounting or elevating opinions of relevance.\nWhile it is impossible to ignore politicians and their influencers in this scene\, the intention is to focus away from political rhetoric and focus on realities including real world calculations\, legal obligations and accounting disclosures. \nPESANSWBranch-AGMNotice2026 \nPESA NSW Branch Committee Nomination Form 2026 \nPESA NSW-ACT Branch AGM 2026 -Annual Report for 2025 \nPESA NSW 2025 AGM Minutes

SUMMARY:PESA NSW: Barry Goldstein Medal Lecture Tour Feb 2026 – Bruce Ainsworth
DESCRIPTION:Honouring the Humble Clinoform: Towards a Reservoir Modelling Best Practice\nSponsored by Santos \nPESA NSW invite you to our technical luncheon. Presented by Bruce Ainsworth (PESA Barry Goldstein Medal Lecture Tour 2026). \nClinoforms have fascinated Bruce since first pondering their economic significance in Shell Research Laboratories in the early 1990’s. These dipping stratal surfaces are ubiquitous in the stratigraphic record but often ignored with regard to their potential significant influence on fluid flow in the subsurface. Whether you are interested in hydrocarbon or groundwater extraction\, carbon sequestration\, or sediment hosted uranium\, you need to know if you are dealing with clinoforms. Clinoforms can have significant impacts on resource recovery and emplacement. Ignoring them or simply not recognising them can have profound (usually) negative impacts on project value. Key to making clinoforms your best friend are three steps; 1) recognition\, 2) uncertainty management\, and 3) targetted modelling. This talk will guide the clinoform user through these steps and suggest a reservoir modelling best practice for honouring the humble clinoform. \n

SUMMARY:NSW Re-union Christmas Party 2025
DESCRIPTION:Geothermal rising can save Tomago without big government subsidies.\nPESA NSW and SPE NSW invite you to the 2025 Christmas Party. This will be a re-union meeting for NSW oil and gas professionals\, so come along for some laughs with old friends. \nNew technology to capture affordable geothermal energy. This talk describes a long awaited breakthrough in technology to deliver plentiful cheap geothermal energy. The obstacles for geothermal energy have been: \n\nDifficulties of using multiple fractures to reliably connect “injection and “production” wells deep under ground\nSite specific nature of traditional geothermal resources\nAffordable drilling technology\n\nAdvances in geothermal technologies from the USA are rapidly changing the economic potential\, including: \n\nAffordably capturing 300 degree heat from wells too deep to drill by using patented deep fraccing\nSimilarly affordably capturing 200 degree heat at drillable 5 km by cycling water through planar fractures; and\nUsing similar technology for underground pumped hydro storage more cheaply than batteries and surface pumped hydro with significantly less community and environmental impact\n\n

SUMMARY:2025 PESA NSW November Talk
DESCRIPTION:Australia is endowed with abundant\, high-quality energy commodity resources\, which provide reliable energy for domestic use and underpin our status as a major global energy provider. \nThese resources make a substantial contribution to the nation’s gross domestic product and export earnings. Geoscience Australia (GA) has a long history of supporting the nation’s energy sector\, delivering independent geoscientific advice and data to underpin informed decision-making regarding Australia’s energy resources across government\, industry\, and the community. \nA key piece of work than informs this function is the annual publication Australia’s Energy Commodity Resources (AECR). To set the scene\, this talk will introduce the recently published AECR2025 publication before presenting an overview of GA’s current energy program. \nUnder the Resourcing Australia’s Prosperity initiative\, GA is focusing on low carbon energy resources that will help Australia achieve net zero. The forward program includes mapping and assessing geological capacity for CO₂ storage (both onshore and offshore)\, identifying potential hydrogen storage sites\, and evaluating natural hydrogen resources. These activities draw on GA’s expertise and existing data to provide new insights and lower investment risk in new resource developments.

SUMMARY:2025 Acreage Release in the Polda and Otway Basins\, SA
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nA key motivation for the South Australian 2025 acreage release is the looming shortfall in energy supply in the southeast Australian market. To facilitate the discovery and production of more gas\, the South Australian Department for Energy and Mining (SADEM) is currently offering prospective acreage in a competitive bid process in two basins (Polda and Otway) across the state.

SUMMARY:PESA ACT/NSW September Technical Talk
DESCRIPTION:Hot Rocks and Hydrogen : the Devil’s Brew\nNE Tasmania has a thin crust and shallow Curie Point Depth\, and is a geologically distinct terrane to the rest of Tasmania. High heat flow values and slow mid-upper crust Vp values support regional and detailed magnetotelluric surveys which indicate shallow electrical conductivity anomalies similar to those observed beneath geothermal fields in NZ and elsewhere worldwide. Devil Resources has modelled existing data to define a hot zone at economically exploitable depth. Other potential zones are identified nearby. Devil is also investigating the potential for natural hydrogen west of the Tamar\, where a set of ultramafic thrusts are identified. The Devil licences are centred on Bell Bay\, where a deep water port and manufacturing zone provide a good basis for viable development. Electricity demand in Tasmania is strong and expanding.

SUMMARY:PESA ACT/NSW July Technical Talk
DESCRIPTION:Kenmore: A Case Study for Static Modelling in a Mature Oil Field\nThe Kenmore field has been producing oil since 1985 and is moving to late field life. Several work-over opportunities existed\, with Kenmore-43\, a previously cased and suspended but yet to be completed well\, identified as one of the best candidates in the field. Focusing on the Jurassic Basal Birkhead and Hutton intervals\, a geological model was built to capture the possible range of outcomes if Kenmore-43 were to be perforated. The modelling work was closely integrated with the simulation results and was continuously refined to obtain the best possible history match. The work identified Kenmore-43 as a viable economic opportunity\, which followed through with a very successful workover.

SUMMARY:PESA ACT/NSW June Technical Talk
DESCRIPTION:Recent Advances in Faulting and Folding in the NSW Coal Fields: Implications and Observations on Fault Hydrogeology\nUnderstanding the impact of subsurface developments on groundwater is one of the key uncertainties for many resource projects. It is common for opponents to invoke faults as an existential threat to aquifers and groundwater systems. \nWhile minor faulting is common within a development\, the resource is generally relatively unfaulted and may be constrained by faults. Generally\, groundwater models used to support environmental impact statements cover an area wider than the development and often include faults. \nA simple set of workflows and schemas will be presented that can be used to characterise and understand the kinematics of faulting geologically. The hydrogeologic understanding of faults is intimately related to how they crosscut and displace aquitards\, aquifers\, and groundwater resources. These workflows will be illustrated using case studies from the Sydney and Gunnedah basins. \nParticular care must be taken when reviewing data and drawing inferences. Sound geological data and principles must be used to parameterise the hydrogeology of faults. A relatively small amount of work done early\, with the appropriate representation of results\, will ease future developments and expansion.

SUMMARY:PESA ACT/NSW April AGM & Technical Talk
DESCRIPTION:PESA_NSW_2025_AGM_Documents \nPESA NSW Branch Committee Nomination Form 2025\nSource rock deformation and hydrocarbon accumulation controlled by a metamorphic core complex in the Kaiping Sag\, northern South China Sea rifted margin\nThe recent discovery of hundred-million-ton-class oil fields in the Kaiping Sag\, on the northern South China Sea rifted margin\, is considered the first global breakthrough in hydrocarbon exploration within supra- detachment basins controlled by mature metamorphic core complexes (MCCs) at passive margins. We utilize 3D seismic\, petrological and geochemical data to reconstruct source rock deformation and hydrocarbon accumulation in the context of detachment tectonism associated with uplift of the Kaiping MCC. In the pre-MCC stage\, high-quality deep-water lacustrine source rocks of the Lower Wenchang Formation were deposited during the intense rifting. During the late Wenchang stage\, the Kaiping MCC was uplifted via a rolling-hinge process\, which caused the transformation of the original attitude and position of the source rock layers in the Lower Wenchang Formation. The distribution of the source rocks can be characterised by three distinct patterns: disconnected with antithetic dip direction (Model I)\, moderate continuous and V-shaped (Model II)\, and continuous with primitive original dip direction (Model III). These models control the dominant migration direction of hydrocarbons. Furthermore\, the extensive development of fault systems and block rotations associated with the Kaiping MCC linking source rocks to traps and influence local oil migration pathways. The breakthrough of hydrocarbon exploration in the Kaiping Sag verifies that supra- detachment basins associated with MCCs also have the potential to develop high-quality source rocks\, particularly during the rifting phase preceding the uplift of the MCC. The source rocks distribution models\, antithetic faults\, and rotating fault blocks resulting from the Kaiping MCC can serve as a reference model for evaluating source rocks and analysing hydrocarbon accumulation patterns in similar types of basins.

SUMMARY:PESA ACT/NSW Christmas Party
DESCRIPTION:PESA NSW & SPE NSW Christmas Party\nPHILIPPINES GEOLOGY AND PETROLEUM POTENTIAL \nThe petroleum potential of the Philippines has long been regarded by “industry experts” as average at best. The Philippines is a country with active crustal plate movements\, subduction zones\, regional wrench faults and active volcanoes located on the western edge of the Circum-Pacific “Ring of Fire”. \nGeologically\, the Philippines is the eastern rifted edge of Asia\, which was initially separated by rifting and the development of the South China Sea commencing in the Eocene. Initial rifting resulted in the deposition of an Eocene clastic section\, dominantly non-marine with extensive coal development. \nThe appearance of oceanic crust in the late Oligocene initiated the drift phase with development of extensive barrier and pinnacle limestone reefs on the upthrown sides of the large normal faults created by rifting. These Oligocene to Early Miocene reefs created the reservoir for many of the large gas fields discovered to date\, eg Malampaya\, which largely sourced the gas from the underlying coal measures. About 10 million years ago the Asian\, Pacific and Australian crustal plates collided creating compression\, subduction\, regional wrench faults and volcanism. This tectonic activity caused regional uplift\, particularly in the west of the Philippines centred on east Palawan and deposition of Early-Mid Miocene sedimentary deposits\, dominated by an extensive deep water marine clastic section with excellent quality sandstone reservoirs. Waxy oils waxy with associated gas are the main hydrocarbon discoveries. These hydrocarbons have been sourced by both marine and non-marine organic matter. \nThe Late Miocene to present day sedimentary section is dominated by a thick section of marine marls and limestone reefs with associated volcanism adjacent areas of plate to subduction. The Tertiary to Recent geology of the Philippines is very similar to that recorded in Indonesia\, Thailand\, Vietnam and parts of offshore China. The Philippines experienced extensive petroleum exploration in the 1960s but concerted exploration efforts since then have been patchy. Whilst trap integrity is considered the main exploration risk\, there is still excellent potential for oil and gas discoveries of significant size. Gas2Grid Limited has been active with onshore petroleum exploration in the Philippines since 2005 and the author since 1981.

SUMMARY:PESA ACT/NSW October Technical Lunch
DESCRIPTION:PESA NSW September Technical Meeting\nMelbana in Cuba: the Amistad-1 success story\nMelbana Energy drilled the Alameda-1 discovery well in onshore Cuba in 2021.  By 2022 the discovery was independently certified by McDaniel (A Canadian based Reserves Certifier with extensive experience in Cuba) to contain over 5 billion barrels of oil in place (best estimate) and 267 million barrels of recoverable oil (best estimate). \nIn 2023 Melbana followed up the Alameda-1 well with the successful Amistad-1 appraisal well which was designed to test the uppermost sheet of reservoirs in the Alameda field (Unit 1A\, 1B\, 2 and 3). \n\nUnit 1A recovered 11.7° API oil with 3\,783 cP viscosity at surface from a 63 metre MD interval starting from 445 metres MD. Although flow rates at surface were not established 40 barrels of oil flowed unassisted to surface (through a 32/64” choke)\, exceeding expectations.\nUnit 3 intercepted 200 metres updip and 500 metres to the south of the Alameda-1 intercept and confirmed moveable oil of a similar quality to Unit 1A. Testing indicated the potential to flow at ~750 bopd. The Unit 2 DST did not demonstrate moveable hydrocarbons to surface at the location tested.\nUnit 1B recovered 19.4° API oil with 5.7 cP viscosity at surface from a 70 metre TVD perforated section – less than 20% of the total Net Pay for Unit 1B (when incorporating fractures). Stabilised unassisted flow rate to surface of 1\,235 bopd measured over 12 hours on a 36/64” choke\, peaking at 1\,903 bopd.\n\nLogged Net Pay for the entire Amistad Formation is 346 metres TVD using 9% porosity\, 50% Sw and 40% VSh cutoffs this  net pay increases to 615 metres when the highly fractured limestones are incorporated (45% of the gross interval). Flow from the fractured interval has been proven by acquisition of production logs validating the incorporation of fractures into the net pay equation. \nUnit 1B has now been completed for future production\, whilst Units 1A and 3 have been suspended for potential future development and production. \nIn March 2024 McDaniel provided a resource update on the Unit 1B; \n\n46 MMbbls (P50) Contingent Resources – Development Pending in the eastern section of the greater Alameda field in the vicinity of the existing wells.\n90 MMbbls (P50) Prospective Resources of assigned in the western part of the field to reflect the uncertainty associated with being away from the existing wells. However\, McDaniels assigned a 70% chance of discovery to the prospective resource reflecting the low- risk nature of this area (given it is updip from the existing discoveries within the field). The risk associated with this area is based on reservoir deliverability.\n\nA preliminary field development plan is being developed for exploitation of Unit1B and an additional two wells focussing purely on production from Unit1B are being planned with the aim of initiating international oil export from Cuba.

SUMMARY:PESA ACT/NSW August Technical Lunch
DESCRIPTION:PESA NSW August Technical Meeting\nPresentation by AEMO\nAEMO are a Federal Government body established to monitor\, report on and manage with another Government Body and some of the Government finance arms the entire Australian energy market. People have no real idea just how massively complicated the Grid actually is and until AEMO became active in seeking to educate Australians just how important their role is\, especially on the East Coast\, the Grid was something of a Black Hole manipulated by the political elements of our society. AEMO has issued in its two recent Reports to Parliament (published widely) extremely worrying determinations that the East Coast of Australia is most likely going to suffer energy black-outs in the coldest and hottest months of 2025 through 2027. Our speaker will be addressing these critical issues along with the role gas will play in filling holes during downturns in electricity generation.

SUMMARY:PESA ACT/NSW July Technical Lunch
DESCRIPTION:PESA NSW July Technical Meeting\nFinding new sources of gas to meet demand for NSW\nNSW business and retail consumers require approximately 120 PJ of natural gas per year. Historically\, gas supply has relied on traditional suppliers in the Cooper Basin\, South Australia\, the Gippsland Basin\, and Victoria along with AGL Energy’s Camden Gas Project (5% of NSW requirements)\, to supply NSW’s gas needs. The role of natural gas in transforming to net zero in NSW is poorly understood whilst the gas markets attempt to avoid gas shortages as both Gippsland and Copper Basin fields decline below critical thresholds. \nThe recently announced Labour Government’s Future Gas Strategy is the latest in a long line of policies/statements/regulations attempting to promote new gas field development against a backdrop of declining fossil fuel investment and public sentiment. \nThe talk will examine a number of sedimentary basin in NSW including conventional and coal seam gas projects in the Sydney\, Gloucester and Gunnedah Basins through the author’s unique perspective on what to look for and assess these project’s key technical risks in an attempt to explain where NSW’s next gas supply could come from.

SUMMARY:PESA ACT/NSW May Technical Lunch
DESCRIPTION:Joint PESA NSW-ASEG NSW Technical Meeting\nStructure and burial history of the South Nicholson region\nThe South Nicholson Region (SNR)\, spanning the Northern Territory and Queensland\, has long been underexplored\, resulting in substantial gaps in our understanding of its geological past. This study aims to bridge these knowledge gaps by analyzing newly obtained data to reveal the region’s burial history and hydrocarbon potential. Our research presents a detailed sequence of geological events that have defined SNR\, utilizing insights from the newly drilled NDI Carrara1 well and the recent 17GA-SN1 seismic line. We have identified three main source rock intervals within the basin: one in the Paleozoic and two in the Proterozoic. We developed various scenarios to examine hydrocarbon migration within the basin. Our findings indicate that the Proterozoic hydrocarbons are overmature\, whereas the Paleozoic hydrocarbons are still immature. \nAGM Documents\nThe PESA ACT-NSW AGM for 2024 will be held immediately prior to the presentation. \nThe existing executive are all prepared to stand for re-election. \nIf anybody else would like to stand (and they are very welcome to do so) a nomination form is available below. \nPESA NSW Branch Committee Nomination Form 2024 \n2024_PESANSW_Annual_Report \nPESANSWBranch-AGMNotice2024

SUMMARY:PESA ACT/NSW April Lunch
DESCRIPTION:PESA NSW Meeting Tuesday April 9\nWe do not have unfortunately have a speaker for our next scheduled meeting on Tuesday\nApril 9th . Rather than cancel our meeting your executive has decided to have a discussion\nabout the content of the recently widely circulated short movie/video Climate The Movie (The\nReal Truth) which can be seen on \nhttps://eds6.mailcamp.nl/url.phpsubid=vew0x395z1j7i14&nstatid=9gj40j711y&info=n9w3d0v&L=17131&F=H \nThe movie is unusual in that it summarises a sceptical view of climate change accepting that\,\nyes\, the earth is warming but not as much as claimed and is a natural result of emerging from\na “mini-ice-age”. The very distinguished speakers also doubt the effect of carbon dioxide in\nthe observed warming and stress that current levels are unusually low compared to past\ngeological ages\, dropping to dangerously low levels during the last Ice age. \nOne of the frustrating things I find is the lack of (readily accessible) basic data to support the\nmany assertions in this and other presentations on the subject. Do the famous Greenland ice\ncores really show temperature rise preceding a rise in atmospheric CO2? Is the level of the\nPacific Ocean really rising? Original references and copies\, if possible\, would be welcome.\nAnyway please come to what I hope will be an interesting and\, I hope\, worthwhile experiment.\nLooking forward to seeing you there.

SUMMARY:PESA ACT/NSW February Twilight Talk
DESCRIPTION:Onshore Gippsland CSG Potential – Myth or Massive?\nThe onshore Gippsland hydrocarbon province has always been a poor cousin to the prolific offshore discoveries of gas and oil. It has been\, however\, the powerhouse of Victoria driven by the huge open-cut brown coal deposits in the Latrobe Valley. Following conventional gas discoveries in the Strzelecki Group at Trifon\, Gangell and Wombat\, attention turned to the shallower\, but deeper than the mined seams\, Traralgon brown coals as candidates for methane extraction from immature\, wet lignite. \nEarly test drilling was carried out in 2005\, but when Exxon entered the area in 2012\, the press perception of easily extracted gas gained widespread publicity in the national press. This presentation describes the technical history of exploration for brown coal CSG\, compared with the public perception of its potential and with the added complication of Victorian Government reaction and legislation.

SUMMARY:PESA ACT/NSW Christmas Party
DESCRIPTION:Australia’s Shale Gas Boom Starts Here\nEmpire Energy Group Limited (“Empire”) looks to emulate the unconventional shale gas boom in Australia that transformed the US energy landscape. Empire holds acreage in the Beetaloo Sub-basin\, within the Greater McArthur Basin in the Northern Territory. That acreage holds stacked Velkerri Formation shales that Empire is currently appraising and has delineated 1.6 TCF (2C) Contingent Resources and 30 TCF (2U) of Prospective Resources. The journey of exploration to appraisal will be discussed in the talk.

SUMMARY:PESA ACT/NSW Melbourne Cup Lunch
DESCRIPTION:Melbourne Cup and oil price prediction lunch\nJoin us in watching the race that stops the nation! A Calcutta and raffle will be held followed by a presentation on future oil price trends. See you there! \nMELBOURNE CUP SWEEP AND CALCUTTA PROCESS \nDue to the smaller groups of attendees and in an effort to increase interest in the Calcutta aspects of our price Prediction Day/Melbourne Cup our auctioneer\, Andy Rigg and the team have come up with an amended set of Rules to make the day more competitive and fun. The new rules of the front end of the Calcutta are as follows: \nEvery person registered and attending on the day of the meeting (including speakers) receives an option to purchase a ticket in the PESA Melbourne Cup (Sweep);\nEvery person above then has the choice to either exercise the option and purchase a ticket in the sweep for $40 or sell the option to the highest bidder\, who must then exercise the option (i.e. and pay the $40 to the auction team);\nThe price paid to buy an option goes to the original option holder;\nThe $40 goes to auction team as a pot for the race to the distributed between first\, second and third horses;\nWith 24 horses the pot should be $960;\nThe names of the persons exercising the options will be inserted into a hat and then drawn against horses drawn out of another hat;\n1/ If the number of exercised options is equal to the number of starters in the Melbourne Cup\, then every exercised option will receive a horse in the sweep;\n2/ If the number of exercised options is less than the number of starters\, then all the names of the registered persons attending will go back into the draw for the remaining horses;\n3/ If the number of exercised options is greater than the number of starters\, then not all exercised option owners will receive a horse in the sweep;\nOnce the owners of all the horses in the field are known\, then the call of the card and the normal Calcutta bidding process can begin as usual based on the declared pot. \nBest advice is to bring along some cash (no credit card facilities available in the Adams Room)\, a willingness to have a lot of fun and front up at the Masonic Club (also known as the Castlereagh Boutique Hotel) on Tuesday 7 November 2023 and get together with all your old friends for a great days entertainment.

SUMMARY:PESA ACT/NSW October Technical Lunch
DESCRIPTION:Seismic in the 60s\nTwo clapped out vessels\nOne drunken skipper\n100 ton of Nitramon \nAn explosive combination!\nPlus Discussion Forum: The future of the PESA NSW Branch\nPlease complete the membership survey by clicking here \nSummary:\nSet in the early days of marine seismic in Australia\, December 1966 to February 1967 \nI spent 3 months as a summer student. It was a 2 boat survey – both clapped out coastal freighters MV Merino and MV Paul Markson. \nAn incident filled trip. \nBallasting the kerosene filled streamer with lead and gaffer tape at midnight on a pitching deck 30ft above the water with no rails whatsoever (OHS was an unknown acronym). Deck awash with kero which rotted all our footwear (and feet). \nSkipper was a drunk\, Party Chief was an idiot. \n8500 foot streamer cut in half by a freighter because the skipper couldn’t signal properly with his Aldis lamp (he could hardly hold it!). \nStreamer sections blown up because the shooting boat couldn’t keep position. \nStreamer sections bitten by sharks. \nSpanish deckhand almost dead from carbon tetrachloride poisoning because he couldn’t tell anyone what was wrong. \nDrunk found down in the hull complete with wine flagon just before we headed to sea. \nHeading back to Portland in a Force 10 gale knowing that the Sedco 135G had slipped its tow and was somewhere out in front of us. \nAnd to cap it all\, we found that 50% of our powder (about 25 tons) would sometimes not explode so it was jettisoned overboard – 1\,000 yellow canisters bobbing off into the Tasman Sea.

SUMMARY:PESA ACT/NSW September Technical Lunch
DESCRIPTION:Tony Allan – The Darai Limestone\, T-Letter stages and strontium with everything: exploration stratigraphy in the Papuan Basin\, a lab and field perspective.\nNotice: Date change to Tuesday 19th September \nThe Oligo-Miocene Darai Limestone crops out over much of the Papuan Fold Belt in the western Papuan Basin\, so its stratigraphy is critical in developing structural models to target Mesozoic reservoirs. Since its first application in the Muller Range in 1990 by Mobil\, strontium (Sr) dating has been used extensively throughout the Papuan Fold to map the base Darai surface. Most of the isotopic analysis was done at the CSIRO labs in Sydney\, in conjunction with petrographic study of limestones as a QC on Sr ages. Without name-dropping too many species\, the talk will outline how the petrographic and field research revitalised the conventional “T-Letter” foram biostratigraphy and Darai microfacies stratigraphy through its calibation to the Sr data. This has been a close collaborative effort with many exploration companies – so some industry geologists might be named. \nExploration for Tertiary limestone reservoirs in the eastern Papuan Basin was revived by InterOil in the early 2000s\, resulting in the 2009 Antelope gas discovery in a Miocene “reef”. By contrast with the Darai “platform”\, in the east sedimentation in a more rifted margin is reflected in the Tertiary sequence; with localised shallow carbonate deposition contiguous with deeper water carbonate and clastic sedimentation\, and the tectonic overprint from the middle Miocene of foreland  Aure  volcanigenic sediments. Within this setting the stratigraphic record of marker forams (& other calacreous microfssils) is complicated by geological factors including reworking and condensation/non-deposition. As a result\, the “noise free” T-Letter scheme and broader microfacies sequence in the Darai has been important to the exploration search for carbonate reservoirs in the east. \nThis account will touch on lessons relevant to ongoing exploration; (1) some findings on Sr age anomalies and their geological and diagenetic causes that have emerged\, particularly in the search for “reef reservoirs in the eastern Papuan basin\, and (2) potential to refine Tertiary sedimentaion models with the large basinwide petrographic and Sr dataset that captures time-facies information. And some concluding remarks on the Darai exploration legacy for current and future Tertiary basin research on the Australian Margin.
