SUMMARY:PESA WA: November Technical Evening Presentation: Andres Gongora
DESCRIPTION:PESA WA invites you to our November Technical Evening Presentation on Thursday 19 November at Faraday’s:\n“Ugly Duckling or Swan? The Hydrocarbon Potential of the Jurassic Cattamarra Coal Measures\, Beermullah Area\, Central Perth Basin”\nPresented by Andres Gongora (Manager Development Subsurface\, Mineral Resources Limited)\n\nThe Jurassic Cattamarra Coal Measures of the central Perth Basin near Gingin have long looked like an ugly duckling. In the Beermullah segment the Jurassic succession differs from the northern Perth Basin area as it is thicker and has markedly distinct reservoir sequences interbedded with claystone dominated sequences. The reservoirs are relatively thin\, low-connectivity fluvial channel belts that prograde towards marine conditions at the top of the Cadda Formation. The base of the Lower Cattamarra\, the J20\, is claystone-dominated. The Beermullah area has also undergone episodes of compression\, which have compartmentalised the structures. Together\, these factors have made hydrocarbon shows localised and hard to predict. \nThis talk presents ongoing work to change that picture. Interpretation of 2D and 3D seismic\, petrophysics and subsurface geology are being combined with HyLogger mineralogy and elemental characterisation to classify and correlate channel sequences. The J30D interval now appears to be the most significant channel-belt feature. Hydrocarbon shows in the Lower Cattamarra (J20) add further exploration potential. Historical gas and condensate production shows a petroleum system that works. \n\nTicket Prices: \nMember: $30.00 \nStudent Member: $10.00 \nConcession Member [Retired or Hardship]: $20.00 \nNon-Member: $40.00 \nAll ticket sales close at 5pm Tuesday 17 November.  No further tickets will be allocated after this time. \nPlease note that this event will be held on Thursday 19 November at Faraday’s (216 St George’s Terrace). Doors open at 5.30pm with the presentation commencing at 6pm. \nHosted with thanks to our Platinum Sponsor: \n \nand Gold Sponsor: \n \nand Silver Sponsors: \n \n \n \nand Bronze Sponsor:

SUMMARY:PESA-ASEG WA: 39th Annual Golf Classic: The Cut - Mandurah
DESCRIPTION:PESA-ASEG 39th Annual Golf Classic: The Cut – Mandurah \n  \nThe PESA-ASEG Annual Golf Classic is one of the most pleasant and well-attended oil and mineral industry golf tournaments held in Perth with recent years enjoying attendances of 100+ players.\nThis years tournament will be hosted at The Cut\, on Friday 13th November. Located in Mandurah’s southern coastal suburbs\, around a one-hour drive south of Perth\, The Cut Golf Course is a true links-style course set among dramatic ocean-front dunes overlooking the Indian Ocean. Designed by James Wilcher\, the course embraces the natural contours of the coastal landscape\, with rolling fairways\, expansive dunes\, native coastal scrub and fast\, undulating greens. Unlike the relatively flat\, manicured character of a parkland course\, The Cut’s elevation changes\, exposed fairways\, strategic bunkering and ever-present coastal winds create a challenging and unpredictable golfing experience\, where shot placement and managing the conditions are as important as distance. \nAfter the charity success from previous years\, PESA-ASEG has decided to partner again with our charity of choice\, Parkerville Children and Youth Care. The charity is a 120-year-old non-for-profit organization\, based here in WA. With 1/4 girls and 1/6 boys affected by child abuse and trauma by the age of 18\, Parkerville has a huge role within our community; to raise awareness of child abuse\, provide services for those in need and grow the network of support in providing a future for our WA children\, young people\, and families. As a proud supporter of the charity\, we will run the day to raise as many funds as possible and are inviting your company to take part in it. There will be a silent auction\, competitions\, prizes\, and raffle. \n  \nItinerary: \nTeams of 4 will play ambrose rules\, and mystery hole handicap weighting’s applied. The schedule for the day will be as follows: \nRegistration from  10am \n10:30am-11:30am:   Registration \n11:00am: Charity hole (putting or chipping) \n 11:30-12:10pm:         Lunch prior to start \n 12:15pm:                        Briefing from pro shop staff \n 12:30pm:                        Shotgun start with escort to appropriate holes \n 5:15pm~5:30pm        Approximate finish \n5:30 pm:                           Dinner followed by prizegiving \nTicket Prices: \nMember (ASEG or PESA): $170.00 \nNon-Member: $220.00 \nBook now to avoid disappointment as tickets are strictly limited. \n– Teams of 4 should be registered as 4 players by the same person.– Teams can be a named team captain plus players TBC. Please contact past-president@pesa.com.au to confirm names once these are known. \nRefund Policy: Refunds are only applicable if notified in writing to past-president@pesa.com.au prior to the close of ticket sales.\nWe kindly thank the following sponsors for supporting this event:\nFeel free to donate gifts on the day for charity auction (best to provide a business card with donation) \nCharity Hole by ASEG PESA \n  \nOn Course Drinks by WSG \n \n  \nHole Sponsors: \n                       \nPrizes sponsored by: \n \n  \n  \nFor sponsorship opportunities contact Adrian (asinclair@slb.com) or Scott (scott.moore@seequent.com) \n\n \n \n

SUMMARY:PESA QLD: Critical\, Criticality and Strategic as Descriptors with reference to Helium\, Bitumen and other commodities
DESCRIPTION:PESA QLD October Luncheon\nCritical\, Criticality and Strategic as Descriptors with reference to Helium\, Bitumen and other commodities \nPresented by: Dr Mike Clarke\nPlease note this technical luncheon has moved from Thursday 22nd Oct to Thursday November 5th. Apologies for any inconvenience. \nAbstract: \nThe Commonwealth Dept of Industry\, Science and Resources introduced Critical and Strategic as descriptors to minerals (critical) and materials/commodities (strategic) to provide a structure to ‘maximise the value of Australia’s resources for our economy and national security’\, from 2019 to the present. The benefit of this system has become an international tool. This presentation is partially to introduce extractive commodity professionals to ‘critical reporting’. \nOne commodity/mineral that has been critical between 2019 – 2023 is Helium. Using what we know of the last twenty years of helium exploration\, production and marketing\, with special reference to the last five years (including the Iran-USA war)\, we see helium supply having rocky-ride. Bitumen is not a critical mineral or strategic commodity; but should it be? HPA (High Purity Alumina) and Silica are two minerals that have expanding roles in semiconductors\, energy technologies and/or defense materials\, that are listed as critical. They have been found in Australia but are not yet in production. \n  \nEvent Details:\nDate: Thursday\, November 5th 2026 \nLuncheon: 12 pm for a 12:30 pm start \nPlace: Stamford Plaza Brisbane \nBookings close 5 pm Tuesday\, October 20th 2026 unless sold out prior. \n  \nPlease note this technical luncheon has moved from Thursday 22nd Oct to Thursday November 5th. Apologies for any inconvenience.

SUMMARY:Field Trip- November 1st 2026
DESCRIPTION:PESA SA Field Trip\nProterozoic Periglacial\, Turbiditic and Deltaic Sequences of the Adelaide Coast \nNovember 1st 2026 \n\n\nProterozoic Periglacial\, Turbiditic and Deltaic Sequences of the Adelaide Coast \nThe objective of the one day field trip will be to view the Proterozoic Periglacial\, Turbiditic and Deltaic Sequences outcropping on the Adelaide Coast. Sections exposed from Marino in the north to Ochre Head in the south demonstrate the transition from a snowball earth during the Marinoan glaciation (Cryogenian Period). The sections cover a period lasting from roughly 650 to 635 million years ago. The field trip will examine periglacial siltstones and possible varvites (Reynella Siltstone)\, through to deep water sandstones and dolomites (Seacliff Sandstones and Nuccaleena Dolomites) and through to delta front sequences (Brachina Group and ABC Range Quartzite\, 613-597 Ma). \nThe section records climatic and seal level gyrations during a critical period of earth’s history when ice caps were melting\, sea levels were rising and ocean waters were rapidly heating.  Controversial aspects of the section include the degree of post glacial sea level rise\, methane escape features generated during ice cap melting and potential early Ediacaran Proterozoic. \nAttendees will require good footwear . Walking will include negotiating some gentle slopes on tracks above the seafront and loose\, potentially slippery rocks on wave cut platforms. \n\nProgram \nMorning \nMeet at Fryer Street Reserve at 9.00am. Park either in Kurabinna Terrace or Fryer Street. With the group take walkway northwards and then down a track to the sea front to visit outcrops of Reynella Siltstone. \nReturn to Fryer Street Reserve walk southwards past Hallet Cove shore platform lookout and Waterfall Creek. Descent on walkway to sea front. Inspect outcrops of Seacliff Sandstone and Nuccaleena Dolomite. \nReturn to Walkway. Head north. Inspect view from lookout and look at outcrops of Seacliff Sandstone \nHead back on Walkway to Fryer Street Reserve. \nLunch at Fryer Street Reserve. \nAfternoon \nAfter lunch head down to Ochre Point at Moana. Park near Azure Drive. Descend to Ochre Point. View ABC deltaic sandstones\, Bunyeroo Formation and possible early Ediacaran Proterozoic mega fossils (613-597Ma). \nDiscuss findings at Kick Back Brewery (11 Old Coach Road\, Aldinga\, South Australia) a 10 minute drive south of Ochre Point (https://www.kickbackbrewing.au/) .

SUMMARY:PESA WA: Rottnest Island Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:PESA WA: WADJEMUP (ROTTNEST) FIELD TRIP –\nCorals\, Calcareous aeolianites & Quokkas – By Bike\nPESA WA is hosting a field trip to Rottnest Island in September 2026.  This is a fantastic opportunity to explore the region\, engage directly with field activities\, and deepen your understanding of the area’s geological context. \nWadjemup (Rottnest Island) is dominated by the Tamala Limestone\, an extensive unit of Pleistocene carbonates that outcrops along large parts of the West Australian margin between Shark Bay and Esperance. It contains the one of the world’s most significant deposits of carbonate aeolianites (wind-blown carbonates\, deposited in dunes) which can be clearly seen in many of the outcrops. However\, Pleistocene to Recent sea-level fluctuations have left behind a variety of other deposits and features – in-situ corals\, shallow marine sediments\, elevated platforms and notches\, salt lakes\, dunes and modern coral reefs. \nA c. 17 km cycling tour of the island\, taking in sights at Salmon Point\, Fairbridge Bluff\, the Lighthouse\, Mt Herschell Quarry\, and Geordie Bay will enable us to examine these different features. We will follow a circular route\, with a scenic stop to eat our packed lunches (please bring your own) and return back to the settlement in time for refreshments before the ferry returns to Perth. \nPlease note that for insurance reasons this trip is only open to members. If you are not currently a member you will need to sign up before booking. \nGetting there: \nThe trip begins at 09.20 at the signpost outside the visitor’s centre at the entrance to the pier.  However you travel\, you must be at this meeting point\, with your bicycle by this time. \nIf you are coming over on the ferry for the day\, the recommended ferries are: \n\n\n\n\ndepart from\ntime\narrive to\ntime\n\ndepart from\ntime\narrive to\ntime\nlist price\nbike hire\nbike freight\n\n\nRottnest express\nFreo B shed\n0830\nRottnest\n0900\n\nRottnest\n1630\nFreo B shed\n1700\n$85.00\n$38.00\n$21.00\n\n\nSealink\nFreo B shed\n0800\nRottnest\n0830\n\nRottnest\n1700\nFreo B shed\n1730\n$83.14\n$37.00\n$20.00\n\n\nRottnest fast ferries\nHillarys\n0730\nRottnest\n0815\n\nRottnest\n1630\nHillarys\n1715\n$96.00\n$29.00\n\n\n\n\nVarious discounts are available on ferry bookings through certain memberships (RAC\, HBF\, entertainment book etc.) \n  \nFieldtrip Leader: Chris Elders and Mark Taylor \nCost: \n\nAttendance is open only to PESA members.  Non-members must join PESA to attend.\n$30.00 per person (Note: This price is for the instruction only. SUMMARY:PESA SA/NT and SPE-SA October Luncheon 2026
DESCRIPTION:PESA SA/NT and SPE-SA October Luncheon\n“Geological CO₂ Storage: Familiar Subsurface\, Different Questions”\nDr. Katherine Romanak\nThe University of Texas at Austin’s Bureau of Economic Geology \n  \nAbstract \nGeological CO₂ Storage: Familiar Subsurface\, Different Questions \nPetroleum geoscientists come to CO₂ storage with a powerful advantage: the rocks\, wells\, fluids and subsurface tools are familiar. But CCS can change the meaning of familiar observations—and sometimes reverse the questions we are accustomed to asking. Injection is not simply production done backwards. When is migration expected\, and when is it a containment concern? Does movement outside a predicted plume represent failure? Can there be environmental impact without CO₂ leakage? And when does a storage issue become a reportable emission? This presentation will explore where petroleum experience transfers directly to geological CO₂ storage and where familiar concepts need to be reconsidered. Drawing on examples from storage projects\, monitoring research\, and controlled-release experiments\, it will distinguish three objectives that are often unintentionally conflated: demonstrating containment\, protecting the environment\, and accounting for emissions. The central argument is simple: before deciding what to monitor\, we must first be clear about the question the monitoring is meant to answer. That distinction has important consequences for how we define leakage\, interpret unexpected subsurface behavior\, assess environmental risk\, and demonstrate that CO₂ storage is both safe and effective. \nEvent Details:\nThursday\, 22 October 2026 \nLuncheon: 12 pm for a 12:30 pm start \nPlace: Ayer’s House\, 288 North Tce\, Adelaide \nThe luncheon will consist of 2 courses and drinks \nBookings close 5 pm Monday\, 19th October  2026 \nAny late bookings will incur an additional $20 fee. Strictly no walk-ins.

SUMMARY:PESA WA: October Technical Evening Presentation: Professor Chris Elders
DESCRIPTION:PESA WA invites you to our October Technical Evening Presentation on Tuesday 20 October at The Shoe Bar:\n“The Peculiarities of Australia’s Northern and Western Margins”\nPresented by Professor Chris Elders (Elders Earth Sciences and Curtin University)\n\nDeep seismic profiles collected from continental margins around the world over the past 20 years have shown that there is no such thing as a “typical” passive continental margin. The role of structural inheritance (the influence of older structural fabrics on subsequent events) and multiple\, distinct phases of rifting are some of the factors that contribute to variety and complexity. Recently completed PhD projects at Curtin University allow us to investigate this further in the context of the northern and western margins of Australia. These show that Paleozoic rifts that propagated east across the Northern Carnarvon and Roebuck basins and south along the western margin of Australia exerted a significant control on subsequent structural architecture and stratigraphy. The differences in the intensity of deformation may account for some of the contrasting features of these margins and in particular\, set up the conditions for the accumulation of thick sequences of Triassic sediments in the Northern Carnarvon Basin depocentre. Being better able to quantify the extent of Permian rifts raises some interesting questions for tectonic reconstructions and the distribution of subsequent Mesozoic rift episodes but helps to explain the morphology of the resulting passive margin and the sedimentary processes that operated on it. \n\nTicket Prices: \nMember: $30.00 \nStudent Member: $10.00 \nConcession Member [Retired or Hardship]: $20.00 \nNon-Member: $40.00 \nAll ticket sales close at 5pm Monday 19 October.  No further tickets will be allocated after this time. \nPlease note that this event will be held on Tuesday 20 October at The Shoe Bar (Yagan Square). Doors open at 5.30pm with the presentation commencing at 6pm. \nHosted with thanks to our Platinum Sponsor: \n \nand Gold Sponsor: \n \nand Silver Sponsors: \n \n \n \nand Bronze Sponsor:

SUMMARY:PESA NSW October 2026 Technical Lunch: Horizon Oil
DESCRIPTION:Sinphuhorm & Nam Phong Gas Fields\, Northeast Thailand \nIn August 2025\, Horizon Oil and Matahio Energy acquired ExxonMobil’s interests in the Sinphuhorm and Nam Phong gas fields\, located on the Korat Plateau in northeastern Thailand. Nam Phong\, now operated by MH Energy Thailand\, the local Thai entity established by Horizon Oil and Matahio Energy\, is the older of the two fields and has been producing gas since the 1980s. Sinphuhorm\, discovered later\, commenced production in 2006 and is operated by Thailand’s national oil company\, PTTEP. Together\, the fields supply gas to the Nam Phong Power Plant\, which provides a significant portion of the electricity demand across northeastern Thailand. \nThe regional geology comprises a thick succession of Triassic to Cretaceous continental clastic sediments overlying Permian carbonate platforms\, which form the primary reservoirs in both fields. Deposited in a warm\, shallow marine environment\, these carbonates have undergone multiple phases of diagenesis\, tectonic fracturing\, and dissolution. Subsequent episodes of extension and structural inversion exposed carbonate highs to prolonged meteoric and burial dissolution\, creating an extensive network of caves\, vugs\, and collapse breccias. Later tectonic deformation further enhanced reservoir complexity through the development of fracture systems\, resulting in highly heterogeneous reservoirs characterized by a combination of structural and diagenetic porosity. \nAs relatively new entrants to these assets\, Horizon and Matahio are leveraging PTTEP’s extensive operational experience and subsurface knowledge to accelerate understanding of the fields. A key challenge is integrating seismic attributes\, well data\, and production performance to better characterize reservoir architecture and predict reservoir behaviour. This integrated approach is particularly important for identifying and optimising future infill drilling opportunities within these fractured and karstified carbonate systems. \nOngoing work is focused on translating the geological complexity of the reservoirs into a robust subsurface framework that improves reservoir prediction and reduces development uncertainty. By combining geological\, geophysical\, and production data\, the current work aims to support more confident field development decisions and enhance the long-term gas deliverability of both Sinphuhorm and Nam Phong. \n

Despite this diversity\, they are globally ubiquitous and play a critical role in subsurface CO₂ storage systems. In particular\, shale porosity governs both storage capacity and caprock integrity by controlling fluid flow through complex pore networks. \nThis study presents a multiscale characterisation of shales from the Songliao Basin\, China\, and the Wessex Basin\, USA\, to evaluate how mineralogical composition and geochemical processes influence pore development. The application of noble gases and nitrogen as proxies for fluid circulation is also demonstrated using samples from the Wessex Basin\, providing insight into fluid–rock interactions and transport pathways. \nThese datasets are integrated with reservoir-scale storage capacity assessments and modelling of CO₂ migration pathways\, highlighting the critical role of shales in the performance and security of subsurface CO₂ storage systems. Based on these findings\, a comprehensive framework for shale assessment is proposed. \nBeyond its research application\, this framework has been adapted for teaching to support the development of students’ ability to integrate data across scales. It provides a structured approach to linking micro-scale observations with basin-scale processes\, fostering critical thinking and systems-level understanding in geoscience education.

SUMMARY:PESA WA: September Technical Evening Presentation: Professor Stephen Flint
DESCRIPTION:PESA WA invites you to our September Technical Evening Presentation on Thursday 17 September at Faraday’s:\n“Stratigraphic prediction in deep water systems of the Karoo (South Africa) and the Rosario (NW Mexico): Implications for stratigraphic traps and CCUS projects”\nPresented by Professor Stephen Flint (University of Manchester\, UK)\n\nThe SLOPE and LOBE industry consortium projects have supported 25 years of data collection in exceptional exposures of deep-water slope and basin floor reservoir analogues\, supplemented by fully cored boreholes in the Permian Karoo basin of South Africa. Results reveal a complex but well-ordered system of depositional sequences. The ‘Karoo Model’ includes a clear physical hierarchy of architectural elements in basin floor and intra-slope lobes and in slope valleys/canyons\, which allows prediction of down-system trends. Evolving slope morphology drives an upward change from attached to detached terminal lobes\, with implications for stratigraphic traps and CCUS projects. The ‘Karoo model’ has been critically tested on the Cretaceous greenhouse forearc basin coarse grained slope systems of the Rosario Formation\, Baja California. Slope valley/canyon systems have geometries\, asymmetric basal cuts and asymmetric fill characteristics to the late icehouse Karoo. The Rosario adds an up-dip system pinch out dataset with features very similar to modern canyon heads. Many components of these studies form the basis for a new project LOBESTORE\, which adds work on the spatial and temporal distribution of minerals likely to be reactive during and after CO2 injection within CCUS projects. \n\nTicket Prices: \nMember: $30.00 \nStudent Member: $10.00 \nConcession Member [Retired or Hardship]: $20.00 \nNon-Member: $40.00 \nAll ticket sales close at 5pm Tuesday 15 September.  No further tickets will be allocated after this time. \nPlease note that this event will be held on Thursday 17 September at Faraday’s (216 St Georges Terrace\, Perth). SUMMARY:PESA NSW September 2026 Technical Lunch: Bass Oil
DESCRIPTION:Bass Oil Kiwi-1 Triassic Gas Discovery \nAt the September meeting I will give an overview of Bass Oil\, its operations and its growth strategies. Importantly\, I will be focusing on presenting some of the initial results from the Company’s Triassic gas study in the northern Cooper Basin in South Australia following up the Kiwi gas discovery in the Triassic aged Callamurra formation. The liquids rich Kiwi gas field continues to be one of Bass’s most exciting assets. \nKiwi Gas Project \nKiwi 1 was drilled in 2003 as a Jurassic oil exploration well. It was not successful however is discovered gas in the Triassic Callamurra section. Although the well tested almost 9 million cubic feet per day on a short DST\, the discovery was never completed and properly tested. Back then it was thought to be too small with a high CO2 content. \nBass acquired the property in 2022 and completed and flow tested in 2024. Following the successful 2024 flow test\, which recorded 4.1 mmcfd of gas and 988 barrels of condensate per day\, Bass has progressed the project toward development. \nIn February 2026\, the South Australian Government awarded Bass $3.5 million in funding to support connection of Kiwi to the Cooper Basin gas network. Bass has advanced technical work on Kiwi\, including interpretation of the reprocessed Kiwi 3D seismic dataset. The results have been encouraging and continue to support the quality of the discovery and surrounding prospectivity. \nThe Kiwi hydrocarbons are extremely liquids rich and low in impurities\, with less than 5% CO₂ and over 200 barrels of condensate per million cubic feet of gas\, as previously disclosed. These characteristics make Kiwi one of the most attractive undeveloped gas discoveries in the Basin. Kiwi’s liquids yield positions it as a high value development opportunity in a market where condensate-rich gas is increasingly sought after.

SUMMARY:PESA WA: Alice Springs Field Trip and Core Viewing
DESCRIPTION:PESA WA ALICE SPRINGS FIELD TRIP\nPESA WA is hosting a field trip to Alice Springs in September 2026.  This is a fantastic opportunity to explore the region\, engage directly with field activities\, and deepen your understanding of the area’s geological context. \nStarting in Alice Springs\, the field trip includes three nights of 4-star accommodation\, with breakfast and lunch provided\, along with transport to and from the field. Expert guidance and commentary will be provided by Peter Haines with contributions from Fiona Burns and Simon Lang. The itinerary covers four days of Amadeus Basin geology\, split evenly between two half days viewing cores and two full days in the field. \nDuring the core workshops\, Fiona Burns (Task Fronterra) will lead participants through the Tent Hill-1 core. This well provides a near-complete section through the Lower to Middle Ordovician stratigraphy\, including the Pacoota Sandstone and overlying units. The Pacoota interval is represented by sub-units P3 to P1\, and recent work suggests deposition in a high-energy\, wave- and storm-dominated shoreface to shelf environment\, with a clear influence from nearby river systems. Simon Lang (GeoSed Consulting) will complement this by guiding the group through cores from the Mereenie Field\, including the P4 sub-unit of the Pacoota Sandstone\, offering a broader view of the full stratigraphic succession. \nIn the field\, Peter Haines (DMPE) will lead the group through the Ellery Creek section\, located approximately 90 km west of Alice Springs. This outcrop provides an exceptional\, near-continuous record of northern Amadeus Basin stratigraphy from the Tonian through to the Devonian. The field component will focus on the Larapinta Group\, comprising the Pacoota Sandstone\, Horn Valley Siltstone\, and Stairway Sandstone\, which represent the primary reservoir and source intervals for key regional accumulations such as the Palm Valley gas field\, Mereenie oil and gas field\, and the Surprise oil field. Participants can expect to see well-exposed sedimentary facies\, trace fossils\, and clear expressions of basin evolution\, with a possible extension into Devonian units depending on access conditions. \nBy combining detailed core analysis with regionally significant outcrop observations\, the trip is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the stratigraphy and to highlight how depositional environments and systems have evolved. \nThere will also be the opportunity to hunt for fossils\, including trilobites\, within the Horn Valley Siltstone. \nFieldtrip Leader: Peter Haines. \nContributors: Fiona Burns\, Simon Lang\, Charlie Verdel. \n \nItinerary: \nDay 1: PM: Core Store (0.5 day): Tent Hill-1 Pacoota and Stairway sandstone cores led by Fiona Burns. \nDay 2: Field Day: Ellery Creek\, Pacoota Sandstone section (shallow marine/deltaic) led by Peter Haines. \nDay 3: Field Day: Ellery Creek section (revisited) and other outcrops (stromatolites\, Dalmatian Rock) by Peter Haines and Charlie Verdel. \nDay 4: AM: Core Store (0.5 day): Mereenie Field core led by Simon Lang \n  \nCost: \n\nAttendance is open only to PESA members\, including interstate and international members.  Non-members must join PESA to attend.\n$1500.00 per person (includes accommodation\, transport to field areas\, breakfast\, lunch and digital field guide).\n\nPlease note that flights are not included in the above\, and places are limited.

This study presents a pedagogical framework that integrates technical\, environmental\, and policy perspectives to support interdisciplinary sustainability education. Focusing on case studies from the United Kingdom and Türkiye\, it explores how different lithium extraction pathways influence water consumption\, water scarcity\, and overall environmental sustainability across contrasting geological and regulatory contexts. \nIn the UK\, lithium extraction is derived from both primary hard rock sources\, such as lepidolite-bearing granites in Cornwall\, and secondary geothermal brines. In Türkiye\, the emphasis is on geothermal lithium production using Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) methods\, including adsorption\, ion exchange\, and membrane technologies. These approaches are compared with conventional evaporation-based techniques\, which involve prolonged processing times and significant water loss. \nUsing water footprint assessment\, the study evaluates total and freshwater use\, brine abstraction\, and associated environmental risks. By integrating insights from literature\, industry\, and policy sources\, the project highlights trade-offs between extraction efficiency and water impacts. The resulting framework supports the development of interdisciplinary skills and aligns sustainability education with emerging industrial and policy needs. \nBuilding on outputs from a Global Engagement Fund project and associated student research\, This work provides an adaptable\, practice‑oriented approach for strengthening sustainability‑focused education. It highlights opportunities for aligning curricula with emerging industrial\, environmental\, and societal needs.

SUMMARY:PESA SA/NT August Luncheon-
DESCRIPTION:PESA SA/NT August Luncheon\n“Petroleum geoscience and the energy transition: \na personal historical perspective and predictions for the future”\nDr Peter Moore\n\n  \nAbstract:\nThe petroleum industry was technologically advanced by the mid 1900s\, but a number of developments over the last half century stand out in the areas of seismic\, sequence stratigraphy\, assessment technologies\, deepwater plays\, drilling\, offshore developments\, CSG and shale\, which will be discussed\, including from a personal perspective. These developments have served to maintain the competitiveness of the petroleum industry and have satisfied an increasing demand over time. \nHowever\, a key question for the industry is its future role in the evolving energy transition. Analysis is difficult because there are multiple competing narratives and strong vested interests. \nToday we sit at a pivot point\, with a growing divergence of possible energy futures\, depending on how the world balances economic growth\, energy poverty\, geopolitics\, and great power competition against emissions reduction\, fossil fuel elimination and climate change concerns. \nIn the decade since the Paris agreement and despite significant progress\, the 1.5oC goal is lost and fossil fuel’s contribution to energy consumption remains at 80%. \nWhile both sides (fossil fuel supporters and renewable proponents) argue their case\, the next 15 years at least is becoming clearer – a US/China energy and manufacturing divide\, huge growth of renewables but matched by overall energy growth\, the emergence of nuclear\, and the persistence of petroleum\, especially gas. \nDespite trillions of dollars spent on the energy transition\, we have underestimated the difficulty in speedily transitioning the world’s energy and industrial infrastructure\, and have underestimated global growth\, including overall energy consumption. This can be seen by comparing predictions and model outcomes published over the last decade. \nFor today’s petroleum geoscientists\, technology and jobs will continue to evolve while new areas are likely to include advanced geothermal\, CCS\, and potentially natural hydrogen. As fields decline and new developments and discoveries become smaller\, more effort and technology are required from petroleum companies and individuals to deliver the energy the world still demands. \n  \nEvent Details:\nThursday\, 27th Ausgust 2026 \nLuncheon: 12 pm for a 12:30 pm start \nPlace: Ayer’s House\, 288 North Tce\, Adelaide \nThe luncheon will consist of 2 courses and drinks \nBookings close 5 pm Monday\, 24th August 2026 \nAny late bookings will incur an additional $20 fee. Strictly no walk-ins.

SUMMARY:PESA NSW August 2026 Technical Lunch: Gerard Ryan
DESCRIPTION:D3 Energy is a natural gas and helium developer listed on the Australian Securities Exchange on 13 May 2024. \nIts cornerstone asset is Exploration Right ER315 in South Africa’s Free State Province\, a major onshore permit covering approximately 811 km²\, and situated immediately east of Renergen Limited’s producing Virginia Gas Project. \nInitial drilling across ER315 has delivered world-class helium concentrations exceeding 5%\, confirming the Company’s geological model and establishing the region as a globally significant helium province. \nThis exploration success has since been reinforced by substantial regulatory and technical progress. The Company has completed a maiden reserve certification over part of ER315\, defining 1P reserves of 7.21 BCF and supporting its Production Right Application\, which has now been formally accepted by South Africa’s Petroleum Agency (PASA). \nIn addition to ER315\, D3 holds multiple permits in South Africa\, including ER386\, TCP 273\, ER391\, ER392 and ER393 bringing its total landholding in the region to just under 2000 km². These assets are defined by their low-cost nature and high prospectivity\, making exploration and development economically competitive. \nIn June 2025\, D3 Energy expanded into Australia\, securing PEL 121 and PEL 122 in the Arckaringa Basin\, South Australia. These permits\, covering ~5\,865 km²\, mark a strategic entry into a frontier basin with growing interest in helium and clean hydrogen exploration. Since acquisition\, the Company has also commenced farm-out discussions for the Hydrohelix prospect to support future drilling activity. \nD3 Energy now operates in two geographies\, South Africa and Australia\, with a dual-hemisphere portfolio targeting critical energy and industrial gases. \nIn South Africa\, the Company’s work is vital in a region facing severe energy shortages. Its focus on identifying and developing natural gas reserves supports the country’s transition toward a more reliable and sustainable energy future.

Generated naturally by geological processes within the Earth\, hydrogen may migrate through the subsurface and accumulate in geological reservoirs. Growing exploration activity\, new drilling programs and evolving regulatory frameworks have attracted increasing interest from the energy\, resources and investment communities. \nThis webinar will provide a general introduction to natural hydrogen and an overview of the current state of this emerging industry. It will examine where natural hydrogen occurs\, the principal geological processes responsible for its generation\, and the geological controls on its migration\, accumulation and preservation. Current exploration approaches will also be reviewed\, including screening of historical datasets\, surface and soil-gas geochemistry\, geophysical methods and exploration drilling. \nThe webinar will also examine recent global exploration activity\, emerging geological play concepts\, resource potential\, economic considerations and the key uncertainties facing the sector. Particular emphasis will be placed on distinguishing encouraging hydrogen occurrences and drilling results from demonstrated\, commercially producible resources.

SUMMARY:PESA QLD: July Technical Evening - Constrained by Geology: Reducing Sub-Seismic Uncertainty with Depositional Analogues and Synthetic Data
DESCRIPTION:PESA QLD July Technical Evening\nConstrained by Geology: Reducing Sub-Seismic Uncertainty with Depositional Analogues and Synthetic Data\nPresented by: Dr. Boyan Vakarelov (Founder\, SEDBASE) \nAbstract:\nMany critical subsurface decisions depend on predicting fluid flow through stratigraphic architectures that occur below typical seismic resolution or in areas with sparse well control. This sub-seismic uncertainty can be meaningfully reduced through following a geology-first approach\, where depositional variability is constrained by process understanding and calibrated against natural analogues. Such an approach should embrace multiple geologically valid solutions and focus on the architectural scale most relevant to the decision at hand.\n\n\nThis presentation draws on insights from an extensive depositional analogue database compiled over the past two decades\, highlighting how process regime and system type control the architecture of shallow marine and fluvial successions. We will then demonstrate how forward stratigraphic and object-based modeling workflows can generate geologically realistic scenarios in data-limited settings. These models not only improve uncertainty quantification and ultimately flow prediction\, but also provide physics-informed synthetic datasets for training AI neural network models.\nEvent Details:\nDate: Thursday\, July 30th 2026 \nTime: 5 pm for a 6 pm start \nPlace: Transcontinental Hotel\, Brisbane \nStandard tickets close 5 pm Monday\, July 27th 2026. \nThose attending the July Core Workshop are welcomed to attend this technical evening with a reduced ticket price.
