SUMMARY:PESA WA November Evening talk: Natural Hydrogen Exploration - applying familiar tools in new ways
DESCRIPTION:Natural Hydrogen Exploration: Applying Familiar Tools in New Ways \n\nKrista Davies: Edith Cowan University\, School of Engineering\, Centre for Sustainable Energy Resources \n\n\nThe field of natural hydrogen exploration is currently experiencing a surge in global interest\, with a notable focus on Australia\, where recent legislative changes have created opportunities for exploration initiatives. But how can we effectively pursue this non-petroleum gas resource? \nIn recent years\, the international dialogue has revolved around the concepts of play fairway mapping and soil gas sampling. However\, the path to harnessing natural hydrogen is not as straightforward as merely marking serpentinites on a map\, assembling drilling equipment\, and venturing into the field. It’s important to acknowledge that natural hydrogen exploration presents distinct challenges that differ from conventional petroleum exploration\, necessitating tailored methodological adjustments. \nThe complex chemical interactions between hydrogen\, water\, and minerals within rocks are contingent upon various factors\, including the original mineral composition\, temperature\, pressure\, salinity and the redox conditions of the system. \nDuring this presentation\, we will delve into a selection of emerging techniques spanning fieldwork\, laboratory analysis\, and desktop methodologies that are currently being developed within the natural hydrogen industry. Many of these techniques share common ground with established practices in oil and gas exploration\, enabling a seamless and practical adaptation to the unique demands of natural hydrogen. \nIn light of the escalating importance of sustainable energy sources\, the exploration of natural hydrogen via the refinement of petroleum techniques assumes a pivotal role in safeguarding our future energy security. Our research underscores the significance of an efficient and pragmatic approach to unlocking the potential of natural hydrogen. With ongoing research and development\, natural hydrogen has the potential to evolve into a critical and dependable contributor to the clean energy mix. \n\nTuesday 14th November 6pm (for talk starting at 6.45pm)\, The Shoe Bar (Yagan Square) \nCost: \nPESA Members:                                $25.00 (Members must Log on to the PESA website to see the member prices) \nNon-members:                                 $50.00 \nPESA Students Members:               Free (registration is essential) \nBookings close Monday 13th November at 5pm for venue and catering purposes.

SUMMARY:PESA WA October Technical Lunch: Why understanding hydrodynamics is critical in petroleum exploration\, appraisal\, development and production.
DESCRIPTION:Hosted with thanks to our Platinum sponsor SLB \n  \n \nGold Sponsors Katalyst Data Management\, Applied Geoscience\, Delft Inversion\, DUG and IKON Science \n              \n                                                \n \nand Silver Sponsor Qeye \n              \n  \nPESA WA invites you to our technical luncheon on Thursday 17th October\nWhy understanding hydrodynamics is critical in petroleum exploration\, appraisal\, development and production. \nPresented by Robert Seggie & Peter van Ruth \n\nWater flow occurs in ALL sedimentary basins from higher pressured to lower pressure areas.  Flow occurs via permeable beds away from meteoric intake areas or from over-pressured mudstones that are de-watering.  Another source of pressure variation is aquifer depletion due to hydrocarbon production\, or aquifer pressurisation due to fluid injection. To understand fluid flow\, pressure must be expressed as over-pressure variation\, the variation in potential\, equating to over-pressure above hydrostatic gradient or head (the height a water column would rise above MSL in a pipe intersecting the point of measurement).  Variation in fluid potential within the aquifer beneath a hydrocarbon field results in a variation in FWL over a field (tilted or stepped contacts).  This is not evident in most fields due to the small size of fields relative to the small variations in potential which are routinely interpreted as measurement error.  However\, when the variation is higher\nthese tilts or steps can be very significant\, due to: \n\nLarge field areas\nFaults causing baffling\nLower permeabilities\nHigher water flows\nHigh density hydrocarbons where minor variation in potential causes\nsignificant tilting.\n\nIn this talk concepts such as overpressure\, potentiometric maps and sections and compartmentalised reservoirs are discussed.  Examples from all over the world are presented along with the impact on failed exploration wells and sub-optimum development plans.  Vertical variation in potential within fields is also discussed. Finally\, publicly available pressure data from the Perth Basin is reviewed and discussed to consider whether Perth Basin Fields are compartmentalised\, or have complexly stepped contacts. \nEvent Sponsors: \n  \nTicket Prices: \nMember (Early Bird): $69.00 \nConcession Member [Retired\, Graduate or Hardship] (Early Bird): $59.00 \nStudent Member (Early Bird): $39.00 \nNon-Member: $99.00 \nMember (Non-Early Bird): $79.00 \nEarly bird pricing ends Thursday (1 week prior) at 5pm (AWST). SUMMARY:PESA WA September Evening talk: Casting a Bigger Shadow: Big New Opportunities in Australian Basins revealed by Regional Fluid Inclusion Data
DESCRIPTION:Casting a Bigger Shadow: Big new opportunities in Australian Basins revealed by regional fluid inclusion data\n \nEnhanced hydrocarbon exploration\, Reduced development risk\, Improved geological storage of CO2 \n\nMark Lisk (Ascendience Geoscience) \n\n\nAustralia boasts the largest resource of fluid inclusion data in the world\, with more than 800 wells\,\nleading the way in application by the oil and gas industry. For exploration\, where constraining the\ntiming\, origin and phases of fluid migration is crucial\, the contribution to improved understanding of\nprocesses that produce\, alter\, or destroy hydrocarbon systems has been profound. These data\nrevolutionise the mitigation of risk in modern petroleum systems analysis\, improve understanding of\nproven systems for better appraisal and development planning and reveal pathfinders to new\npetroleum systems that will yield future discoveries. \nIn field development these data are especially valuable\, predicting down-dip oil rims in gas fields\,\noffering constraint on reservoir quality\, and by constraining water saturation in fields where formation\nwater samples are contaminated these unique data augment conventional measurements and yield\nsuperior control on the accuracy of field reserve calculations. \nAs geological storage of CO2 emerges as a vital climate mitigation strategy fluid inclusion data provides\ncrucial insights for effective screening of storage sites. From demonstrating the absence of viable\npetroleum systems to avoid contamination of yet to find petroleum resources to constraining the\nthermal conditions in wells with poor or no data and providing crucial constraint on the nature of\naquifer systems especially for migration assisted storage sites where salinity looms as a critical\, but\npoorly constrained\, factor. \nThis whistle stop tour examines a diverse range of Australian Basins and beyond to demonstrate the\nutility of these methods\, highlight areas where application directly contributed to discoveries or an\nimproved understanding of existing oil and gas fields and reveal those areas with good potential for\nfuture discoveries. Early application to identifying suitable sites for the geological storage of CO2 will\nalso be discussed where fluid inclusions can literally help to save the world! \n\nEvent Sponsors: \n \nThursday 21st September 6pm (for talk starting at 6.45pm)\, The Shoe Bar (Yagan Square) \nCost: \nPESA Members:                                $25.00 (Members must Log on to the PESA website to see the member prices) \nNon-members:                                 $50.00 \nPESA Students Members:               Free (registration is essential) \nBookings close Wednesday 20th September at 12 noon for venue and catering purposes.

SUMMARY:PESA WA August Technical Lunch: Flexible Solutions for both CCS Measurement\, Monitoring\, and Verification (MMV) and Offshore Windfarm Developments
DESCRIPTION:Hosted with thanks to our Platinum sponsor SLB \n  \n \nGold Sponsors Katalyst Data Management\, Applied Geoscience\, Delft Inversion\, DUG and IKON Science \n                \n                                                \n \nand Silver Sponsor Qeye \n \n  \nPESA WA invites you to our technical luncheon on Thursday 17th August\nFlexible Solutions for both CCS Measurement\, Monitoring\, and Verification (MMV) and Offshore Windfarm Developments \nPresented by Andrew Long (PGS) \nMeasurement\, Monitoring\, and Verification (MMV) are essential to Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) projects\, ensuring their effectiveness\, safety\, and regulatory compliance. Precise CO2 emission measurements\, ongoing project performance monitoring\, and independent data verification provide stakeholder confidence in the CCS system’s greenhouse gas reduction\, safe operation\, and prompt issue resolution. \nLikewise\, developing ground models for offshore wind turbine placement demands a comprehensive approach that addresses various geotechnical\, geophysical\, regulatory\, and stakeholder aspects. \nA common element should be that any ‘baseline’ geophysical platform is built to best practice standards for both CCS and Wind projects. For CCS\, accurate subsurface characterization ensures reliable site candidate selection and ranking\, facilitating the deployment of appropriate monitoring technologies post-CO2 injection in a cost-effective manner. Similarly\, high-resolution 3D geophysical data for Wind projects enable the development of an accurate 3D ground model for integrating subsequent geotechnical and geophysical measurements\, reducing the need for costly new surveys when adjusting turbine foundation locations. \nThis talk comprises four stages: \n\nI present AI\, machine learning\, and automation solutions to enhance the petrophysical and geological understanding of near-surface and overburden areas crucial for both CCS containment and Wind projects.\nI outline an efficient workflow for CCS site screening\, focusing on Container and Containment elements.\nI briefly discuss methods for acquiring high-resolution (HR) and ultra-high-resolution (UHR) seismic data cost-effectively\, including suggestions for congested infrastructure areas where traditional seismic surveys are logistically challenging.\nI describe subsurface characterization (both CCS and Wind) and monitoring solutions (for CCS) that leverage innovations from stages 1 and 3.\n\n\nEvent Sponsors: \n \nTicket Prices: \nMember (Early Bird): $69.00 \nConcession Member [Retired\, Graduate or Hardship] (Early Bird): $59.00 \nStudent Member (Early Bird): $39.00 \nNon-Member: $99.00 \nMember (Non-Early Bird): $79.00 \nEarly bird pricing ends Thursday (1 week prior) at 5pm (AWST). All ticket sales close at 5pm Tuesday (2 days prior). \n
