We present a method of reservoir monitoring that calculates changes in pressure and saturation in a producing reservoir by applying EEI to time-lapse seismic data. The method uses time-lapse seismic difference data rotated to specific EEI χ angles which are optimised for the changes expected in a given reservoir. One angle is found to be appropriate to identify predicted changes in saturation\, using fluid substitution models\, while the other angle is found from rock-physics assumptions or laboratory measurements of fluid-pressure changes. \nOur technique is tested using time-lapse seismic data for the Enfield oil field\, in the North West Shelf\, Australia\, with estimates of optimal EEI rotation angles χ based on log data and Biot-Gassmann modelling for the fluid changes\, and on rock physics models fit to measurements made on core samples for the pressure changes. Reflectivity and inversion domains were used using various approaches to test results qualitatively and quantitively. \nThe final calculated pressure and saturation maps predicted areas where changes in pressure and/or saturation changes were expected. It was successfully tested with two areas of changing the pressure from the well data\, showing that our quantitative results are credible. To understand fluid flow\, pressure must be expressed as over-pressure variation\, the variation in potential\, equating to over-pressure above hydrostatic gradient or head (the height a water column would rise above MSL in a pipe intersecting the point of measurement).  Variation in fluid potential within the aquifer beneath a hydrocarbon field results in a variation in FWL over a field (tilted or stepped contacts).  This is not evident in most fields due to the small size of fields relative to the small variations in potential which are routinely interpreted as measurement error.  However\, when the variation is higher\nthese tilts or steps can be very significant\, due to: \n\nLarge field areas\nFaults causing baffling\nLower permeabilities\nHigher water flows\nHigh density hydrocarbons where minor variation in potential causes\nsignificant tilting.\n\nIn this talk concepts such as overpressure\, potentiometric maps and sections and compartmentalised reservoirs are discussed.  Examples from all over the world are presented along with the impact on failed exploration wells and sub-optimum development plans.  Vertical variation in potential within fields is also discussed. Then\, this physical basis provides a framework for determining how to optimize monitoring methods. Using the latest portfolio of geophysical methods for smart and cost-effective monitoring at the surface and downhole (including conventional seismic acquisition\, passive seismic listening\, and fibre-optic sensing)\, we discuss how short- and long-term storage assurance can be demonstrated with high levels of confidence. \nNext\, we address the question of what is needed to achieve climate-significant scales of CCS deployment. Although technically achievable\, the current socio-economic framing often makes storage project execution difficult in practice. This structural model is based on limited seismic coverage and well intersections near the flanks of the sub-basin\, and is here tentatively revised following integrated mapping with new regional data.  The data integration reveals a possible east-northeast oriented basement ridge with a structural amplitude up to 1000 m in the central part of the Kidson Sub-basin. This ridge possibly divides the Kidson Sub-basin into two distinct parts and potentially is a significant feature with extensive implications for hydrocarbon\, CO2 sequestration\, natural hydrogen\, helium and mineral prospectivities of the sub-basin. Although the basement ridge is supported by regional changes in depositional facies and marginal seismic data\, the existence of such elevated feature remains highly uncertain in the absence of a seismic profile across the ridge. Since many of the basins in the UKCS are regarded as mature there is now an increasing emphasis towards plug and abandonment rather than further exploration. In this webinar\, we will explore the opportunity that exists to re-purpose near end-of-life wells and fields for use in CO₂ storage operations. Re-use as an alternative to plugging and abandonment could potentially result in significant cost savings. \nIkon Science completed the presented work with BGS for the Re-Using Existing wells for CO₂ storage operations project (REX-CO₂)\, which is an R&D initiative funded through Accelerating CCS Technologies (ACT) programme. The project aims to evaluate potential for re-purposing existing oil and gas wells that penetrate prospective CO₂ storage reservoirs. A screening methodology and software tool has been developed\, and is applied to two UKCS case studies; a depleted gas field and a saline aquifer structure. Determinations of subsurface pore pressure\, fracture pressure and seal capacity are integral to the analysis. The procedure for acquisition of regional data\, determination of production and depletion impacts\, and estimation of seal capacity are considered along with considerations for partial well abandonment. Some challenges for re-use assessments of wells on the UKCS will also be highlighted. The Mangahewa Formation represents deposition within a deltaic setting that displays variable influences of wave\, fluvial and tidal processes\, with wave and fluvial processes dominant. Broadly\, the >1000 m thick formation constitutes a 2nd order progradational succession overlain by a retrogradational succession composed of 3rd and 4th order sequence sets. Arcuate delta and beach-ridge geometries can be imaged using seismic attribute data. Landwards of the shoreline systems\, lower delta plain with associated fluvial channel facies belts dominate. \nIn the Pohokura Field and Turangi area\, well developed\, wave-dominated\, fluvial influenced\, tide-affected (Wft) shoreface packages dominate the reservoir sections. The shoreface strata comprise cross-stratified sandstone-rich deposits with relatively high degrees of bioturbation and high ichnodiversity\, dominated by Ophiomorpha nodosa\, Ophiomorpha irregulaire\, Dactyloidites isp.\, Conichnus isp.\, and very large Asterosoma isp. Trace-fossil analysis enabled the subdivision of the shoreface strata into Upper\, Middle\, and Lower Shoreface (proximal and distal) packages. High stress levels are characteristic of the Distributary Channel packages\, which are either non-bioturbated or reveal sparse bioturbation by Skolithos linearis. Abundances of Ophiomorpha nodosa preferentially reworking clay drapes characterize the uppermost parts of tidally influenced channel packages locally. Firmground Thalassinoides isp. (Glossifungites ichnofacies) are common below channel bases. \nIchnologically\, the back barrier lagoonal heterolithic strata\, mainly interbedded with coal beds\, reveal highly stressed ichnofaunas. They were either non-bioturbated\, or contained Planolites montanus\, rare Chondrites isp. and/or Thalassinoides isp. Heterolithic strata representing down-drift strata also reveal similarly stressed ichnofaunas\, with many monospecific trace-fossil assemblages characteristic. In contrast\, non-stressed Delta Front heterolithic deposits are characterised by intensely bioturbated strata with maximum ichnodiversity. This is best addressed by integrating the basin’s tectono-stratigraphic evolution\, its gross depositional environment\, and its hydrodynamic\, thermal and stress regimes. \nA basin-scale GCS assessment for the Barrow-Dampier sub-basins was conducted by Geoscience Australia and SLB. The objective of the study is to high-grade geological intervals and sites for potential GCS and to understand potential storage capacity and key risk factors. Stratigraphic and structural mapping of key storage intervals was performed using the reprocessed seismic volume and well database associated with the project. Analysis of critically stressed faults was used to estimate the likelihood of reactivation based on the far-field regional stress field and fault mechanical properties. Pressure\, temperature\, porosity\, permeability\, and water geochemistry data has been screened for >500 wells for assessing the storage unit intervals and predicting the hydrodynamic regime. Calibrated 2D basin models provide information on the regional pressure-temperature regime\, porosity/permeability distribution\, and sealing effectiveness. Potentiometric surface maps for the aquifer systems inform the distribution of CO2 plume migration. Results of this integrated regional basin study are used to quantify the risk of identified storage containers and to map the chance of success for GCS at a regional scale. Recent trends have seen substantial decreases in power-related generation in the past decade; however\, existing and planned wind\, solar and battery storage projects are not capable of offsetting planned retirements of thermal power plants – especially when considering anticipated increases in electricity demand and baseload supply issues. Supply shortfalls and grid reliability issues represent serious risks to safe\, secure\, clean and affordable energy. \nGeothermal resources address these issues by providing flexible\, dispatchable\, baseload power that complements solar and wind projects by providing “always-on” power\, supplementing those significant\, but intermittent resources. Furthermore\, geothermal is highly scalable\, allowing fit-for-purpose power solutions\, including behind the meter provision\, “islanded” grids in remote areas\, and baseload or dispatchable supply to the grid in more populous areas. \nThis talk provides an overview of geothermal energy in an Australian context\, including next-generation technologies that have transformed the global industry over the past decade; the benefits and challenges that will shape the sector in the coming decades; and critical commercial\, regulatory\, ESG and other success factors that will drive geothermal energy as a significant component of Australia’s decarbonized future. \n\nAustralian CCUS in 2024 – project status\, policy and the future \nPresented by Rosie Johnstone (Geovault) \n\nCCS project maturation in Australia has seen highs and lows since it was first initiated 1999 with the GEODISC study. But remains well below expenditure highs of a decade ago\, which was dominated by offshore activity. Exploration expenditure\, and activity\, is now dominant in onshore state jurisdictions. This has been the case since 2019 and will continue with no Federal offshore petroleum exploration acreage release rounds or exploration permit awards in 2023. Exploration expenditure (and activity) appears to be de-linked from increases in commodity prices which have typically been exploration stimuli in the past. This widespread thick sand dominated unit is variably named the Yarragadee Formation\, Cattamarra CM\, Legendre Formation and Plover Formation\, depending on basin. It represents a mega deltaic succession grading from fluvial to deltaic to marine and back again\, both vertically and laterally from the Perth Basin in the South and continuing to East Timor and Indonesia in the Nth. Cores have been chosen to cover the vertical and lateral variation with cores from Houtman-1 in the Perth Basin\, Perseus-2 in the Nth Carnarvon Basin\, Callaince-1 in the Browse Basin and Barrossa-3 in the Bonaparte Basin. Depofacies include fluvial channel fill\, distributary channel fill\, shore face\, interdistributary bay\, delta front\, offshore transition and open marine. Come and review the facies variations\, the diagenetic variability and the controls on production that are evident in the core.
