DESCRIPTION:PESA WA invites you to a technical Evening Event Thursday 21st November.\nTop Seal and Compartmentalisation in the Kingia Play\, implications for porosity preserving Plays. \nPresented by Alex Fuerst (Molyneux Advisors) \nIn the Kingia play of the North Perth Basin\, significant compartmentalisation is observed across the basin and within individual fields\, despite the sand-on-sand juxtaposition. This compartmentalisation manifests in both pressure and phase (gas/water) variations. Cemented fractures are observed near fault zones in Perth Basin wells. This results in decreased permeability near faults\, as evidenced by local wells in the Perth Basin. \nSEM images show fractures within grains of grain coated sands are sufficient to serve as nucleation sites for quartz cementation. In contrast\, within the Irwin River Coal Measures (IRCM)\, the grain surfaces alone provide sufficient sites for cementation. The IRCM sands exhibit permeabilities that are characteristic of seals\, with samples displaying quartz cementation\, kaolin cementation\, or a combination of both. \nThe implications for play risk / play maps are significant. Shallower Kingia penetrations face an unproven top seal due to the less cemented IRCM\, potentially explaining the multiple shallower exploration failures. At greater depths\, the presence of more complex faulting may enhance fault seal integrity and lead to more intricate trap configurations. However\, this also likely increases development complexity due to reservoir compartmentalization. Following on from this\, seven companies have lodged over 40 applications for PELs targeting natural hydrogen over the State?s basins and crystalline basement provinces. PEL 687 is the first licence in Australia targeting natural hydrogen and was granted to first movers Gold Hydrogen Pty Ltd in July 2021 over Yorke Peninsula and Kangaroo Island. The second licence (PEL 691) was granted to H2EX in June 2022 over eastern Eyre Peninsula. DESCRIPTION:PESA NSW & SPE NSW Christmas Party\nPHILIPPINES GEOLOGY AND PETROLEUM POTENTIAL \nThe petroleum potential of the Philippines has long been regarded by “industry experts” as average at best. The Philippines is a country with active crustal plate movements\, subduction zones\, regional wrench faults and active volcanoes located on the western edge of the Circum-Pacific “Ring of Fire”. \nGeologically\, the Philippines is the eastern rifted edge of Asia\, which was initially separated by rifting and the development of the South China Sea commencing in the Eocene. Initial rifting resulted in the deposition of an Eocene clastic section\, dominantly non-marine with extensive coal development. \nThe appearance of oceanic crust in the late Oligocene initiated the drift phase with development of extensive barrier and pinnacle limestone reefs on the upthrown sides of the large normal faults created by rifting. These Oligocene to Early Miocene reefs created the reservoir for many of the large gas fields discovered to date\, eg Malampaya\, which largely sourced the gas from the underlying coal measures. About 10 million years ago the Asian\, Pacific and Australian crustal plates collided creating compression\, subduction\, regional wrench faults and volcanism. This tectonic activity caused regional uplift\, particularly in the west of the Philippines centred on east Palawan and deposition of Early-Mid Miocene sedimentary deposits\, dominated by an extensive deep water marine clastic section with excellent quality sandstone reservoirs. Waxy oils waxy with associated gas are the main hydrocarbon discoveries. These hydrocarbons have been sourced by both marine and non-marine organic matter. \nThe Late Miocene to present day sedimentary section is dominated by a thick section of marine marls and limestone reefs with associated volcanism adjacent areas of plate to subduction. The Tertiary to Recent geology of the Philippines is very similar to that recorded in Indonesia\, Thailand\, Vietnam and parts of offshore China. The Philippines experienced extensive petroleum exploration in the 1960s but concerted exploration efforts since then have been patchy. Whilst trap integrity is considered the main exploration risk\, there is still excellent potential for oil and gas discoveries of significant size. Gas2Grid Limited has been active with onshore petroleum exploration in the Philippines since 2005 and the author since 1981.

DESCRIPTION:PESA WA invites you to a technical Evening Event Thursday 13th February.\nNew Tricks for Old Dogs: Modelling for the Energy Transition\nPresented by Mark Bentley (Langdale Geoscience) \nSo\, the plan is to store CO2 … \nIf we’re involved in making reservoir and simulation models for oil and gas production\, what do we have to do differently now for the world of storage?  On the face of it\, these are just gas disposal schemes (simple).  On closer inspection\, it’s not quite like that\, and it turns out it’s much more interesting (harder). \nThis short talk looks at some areas of change and the aspects we need to get right if our forecasts are to be meaningful at all.  There’s a clear shift from sedimentary to more structural themes (which we have to be much better at)\, a replacement of familiar concepts such as in-place resource volumes and recovery factor to less familiar ideas of storativity and storage efficiency and a rethink of the importance of heterogeneity in the face of different fluids and in a non-isothermal world. \nThe scales we model at will need to be different\, and so will the timescales.  There’s also the over-arching issue that best solutions are likely to lie in aquifers\, yet most projects on the drawing board are for depleted gas fields. DESCRIPTION:PESA SA/NT February Luncheon\nSeismic interpretation of the Petrel Sub-basin CO2 Storage Opportunity \nJames Komenza\nAbstract: \nAn integrated geologic and geophysical study of the Mesozoic storage resource in the Petrel Sub-basin (Bonaparte Basin). This study includes regional petrophysics\, geomechanics\, rock physics\, seismic reprocessing and inversion in an area of sparse well and seismic data. \nAlthough numerous wells have been drilled in the Petrel Sub-basin\, their focus has been the underlying Palaeozoic petroleum system\, resulting in scant or compromised data quality in the overburden. This often limits data utility for reservoir characterization\, field appraisal and development planning for the primary Mesozoic storage targets. Seismic reprocessing and quantitative interpretation supported by a model-based rock physics workflow have been used to fill in some of the gaps. This new data has been used to interpret depositional trends of both reservoir and seal\, reservoir quality\, heterogeneity and clay content\, seal presence and thickness\, and interval velocity away from well control. Several carbon storage demonstration sites are undergoing feasibility studies and environmental impact assessment internationally and in Australia. Very recently CO2 storage in the Surat Basin gained a lot of media and political attention – the QLD government has now put a ban on CCS in the geographical extent of the QLD Great Artesian Basin (and below it). The reservoir that was being assessed is in a deep (~2300 m)\, brackish\, unpotable part of the Precipice Sandstone. However\, the broader formation is an aquifer of the GAB\, therefore stakeholders were sensitive to potential environmental impacts. The previous demonstration site that underwent assessment was further north in the shallower part of the Precipice Sandstone (~1200 m). In that Glenhaven site the West Wandoan 1 well was drilled for the feasibility study\, and the reservoir had fresh groundwater. DESCRIPTION:PESA_NSW_2025_AGM_Documents \nPESA NSW Branch Committee Nomination Form 2025\nSource rock deformation and hydrocarbon accumulation controlled by a metamorphic core complex in the Kaiping Sag\, northern South China Sea rifted margin\nThe recent discovery of hundred-million-ton-class oil fields in the Kaiping Sag\, on the northern South China Sea rifted margin\, is considered the first global breakthrough in hydrocarbon exploration within supra- detachment basins controlled by mature metamorphic core complexes (MCCs) at passive margins. We utilize 3D seismic\, petrological and geochemical data to reconstruct source rock deformation and hydrocarbon accumulation in the context of detachment tectonism associated with uplift of the Kaiping MCC. In the pre-MCC stage\, high-quality deep-water lacustrine source rocks of the Lower Wenchang Formation were deposited during the intense rifting. During the late Wenchang stage\, the Kaiping MCC was uplifted via a rolling-hinge process\, which caused the transformation of the original attitude and position of the source rock layers in the Lower Wenchang Formation. The distribution of the source rocks can be characterised by three distinct patterns: disconnected with antithetic dip direction (Model I)\, moderate continuous and V-shaped (Model II)\, and continuous with primitive original dip direction (Model III). These models control the dominant migration direction of hydrocarbons. Furthermore\, the extensive development of fault systems and block rotations associated with the Kaiping MCC linking source rocks to traps and influence local oil migration pathways. The breakthrough of hydrocarbon exploration in the Kaiping Sag verifies that supra- detachment basins associated with MCCs also have the potential to develop high-quality source rocks\, particularly during the rifting phase preceding the uplift of the MCC. The source rocks distribution models\, antithetic faults\, and rotating fault blocks resulting from the Kaiping MCC can serve as a reference model for evaluating source rocks and analysing hydrocarbon accumulation patterns in similar types of basins.

DESCRIPTION:PESA SA/NT May Luncheon\nProspectivity of the Daralingie Shelf area of the Warburton Basin\, SA\nTim Rady (Geomorph Energy) and Rob Kirk (Consultant)\nAbstract:\nTo further highlight the prospectivity of the Warburton Basin\, the South Australian Department for Energy and Mining (SADEM) has undertaken a whole of basin project integrating regional seismic interpretations (using the 2D Cube)\, previous geological understanding\, well and standardized core interpretations. The May 2025 PESA lunch will be the first public release of the main outcomes from this project. \nThe Cambrian eastern Warburton Basin underlies the bulk of the hydrocarbon-producing Permian Cooper Basin in South Australia. The Warburton\, like the Cooper Basin\, is hydrocarbon bearing with a significant catalogue of hydrocarbon shows recorded from a wide variety of lithologies and stratigraphic intervals. Therefore\, understanding the stratigraphic context of hydrocarbon occurrences is critical to unlocking this basin’s prospectivity. It is in this context that two integrated seismic-based interpretations were undertaken in this project and are the focus of PESA’s May 2025 lunch time lecture. \nThe initial seismic interpretation\, by R. Kirk\, looked at the whole eastern Warburton Basin with the results providing the stratigraphic and gross depositional environment (GDE) concepts that underpin the entire project. From this work a new stratigraphic sub-division of the Warburton Basin has been developed (Kirk et al 2025). Subsequently\, the second seismic study was undertaken (by T. Rady) building upon the seismic sequence stratigraphic framework developed by Kirk et al (2025) by combining seismic attributes\, structural and seismic facies mapping and core descriptions to develop GDE and updated reservoir distribution maps for the uppermost section\, termed ‘400-1000’. DESCRIPTION:Recent Advances in Faulting and Folding in the NSW Coal Fields: Implications and Observations on Fault Hydrogeology\nUnderstanding the impact of subsurface developments on groundwater is one of the key uncertainties for many resource projects. It is common for opponents to invoke faults as an existential threat to aquifers and groundwater systems. \nWhile minor faulting is common within a development\, the resource is generally relatively unfaulted and may be constrained by faults. Generally\, groundwater models used to support environmental impact statements cover an area wider than the development and often include faults. \nA simple set of workflows and schemas will be presented that can be used to characterise and understand the kinematics of faulting geologically. The hydrogeologic understanding of faults is intimately related to how they crosscut and displace aquitards\, aquifers\, and groundwater resources. These workflows will be illustrated using case studies from the Sydney and Gunnedah basins. \nParticular care must be taken when reviewing data and drawing inferences. Sound geological data and principles must be used to parameterise the hydrogeology of faults. A relatively small amount of work done early\, with the appropriate representation of results\, will ease future developments and expansion.

DESCRIPTION:Kenmore: A Case Study for Static Modelling in a Mature Oil Field\nThe Kenmore field has been producing oil since 1985 and is moving to late field life. Several work-over opportunities existed\, with Kenmore-43\, a previously cased and suspended but yet to be completed well\, identified as one of the best candidates in the field. Focusing on the Jurassic Basal Birkhead and Hutton intervals\, a geological model was built to capture the possible range of outcomes if Kenmore-43 were to be perforated. The modelling work was closely integrated with the simulation results and was continuously refined to obtain the best possible history match. The work identified Kenmore-43 as a viable economic opportunity\, which followed through with a very successful workover.

DESCRIPTION:Hot Rocks and Hydrogen : the Devil’s Brew\nNE Tasmania has a thin crust and shallow Curie Point Depth\, and is a geologically distinct terrane to the rest of Tasmania. High heat flow values and slow mid-upper crust Vp values support regional and detailed magnetotelluric surveys which indicate shallow electrical conductivity anomalies similar to those observed beneath geothermal fields in NZ and elsewhere worldwide. Devil Resources has modelled existing data to define a hot zone at economically exploitable depth. Other potential zones are identified nearby. Devil is also investigating the potential for natural hydrogen west of the Tamar\, where a set of ultramafic thrusts are identified. The Devil licences are centred on Bell Bay\, where a deep water port and manufacturing zone provide a good basis for viable development. Electricity demand in Tasmania is strong and expanding.

Adjunct Professor\, University of Adelaide\, Australia. \nNew numerical wave-influenced delta depositional models are challenging long-held rational for interpreting sea level variations recorded by wave-dominated shallow-marine successions. Shallow-marine\, wave-dominated deposits (parasequences) are generally inferred to exhibit a decrease in wave energy and grain size with increasing water depth and to occur in facies belts that are laterally continuous for long distances along strike. Bedding geometry and vertical facies successions within these parasequences are interpreted in relation to a prograding equilibrium shoreface profile (cf. Bruun rule) and a gradual upward-coarsening facies progression (cf. Walther’s law). Sea-level fall is commonly inferred to generate a sharp-based shoreface succession\, characterized by an abrupt vertical transition from heterolithic lower shoreface to sandy upper shoreface deposits across a marine erosion surface. A truncated vertical shoreface succession\, capped by a marine erosion surface\, is inferred to record significant wave ravinement during sea level rise and transgression.  \nThree-dimensional\, process-physics-based\, coupled hydrodynamic-morphodynamic wave-influenced delta models suggest that wave-dominated deltas will develop a sandy shoreface inner clinoform dipping from the subaerial delta plain to a relatively flat wave-scoured subaqueous delta top\, which is laterally separated from a muddier delta front outer clinoform that dips from the subaqueous delta top edge to the shelf floor. As these systems prograde\, deposits of these dual-clinoforms will become vertically stacked and will be separated by a regressive surface of marine erosion formed on the subaqueous delta top. Grain-size contrasts between these vertically stacked clinoform deposits reflect differences in sediment-transport directions and sorting under river- and wave-driven littoral currents along the coast\, and cannot be uniquely related to sea-level changes. Gradual vertical facies successions develop where waves are less effective at reworking river-supplied sediment alongshore. In contrast\, sharp-based shoreface deposits record more effective wave separation of sands onto the shoreface clinoform as muds are preferentially transported offshore onto the subaqueous delta clinoform.  \nThe continuity of a regressive surface of marine erosion over many tens to hundreds of kilometres across mid-shelf regions of some stratigraphic sequences reflects a gradual lateral shift in the position of littoral current erosion on a subaqueous delta top. Timelines cross such vertical lithic discontinuities throughout the extent of a prograding deposit\, and the regressive surface of marine erosion thus has little chronostratigraphic significance. The model results are used to suggest: 1) Characteristic strongly asymmetric wave-dominated parasequences suggest common river avulsion at the start of transgression\, 2) Observed down-dip transitions from “gradual-based” to “sharp-based” shoreface deposits might record reduced sediment supply to the coast relative to rates of longshore drift as the system expands toward its auto-retreat limit\, rather than transitions from normal to forced regression\, and 3) Regional “top-truncated” shoreface successions might record progradation of dual-clinoform shorelines with wide deviation in net direction of regional sediment supply and shallow-water wave transport\, rather than significant regional transgressive ravinement. The results of these models suggest caution in inferring sea-level changes from the character of vertical facies changes observed in individual well logs and isolated outcrop exposures.
