DESCRIPTION:PESA WA invites you to a technical Evening Event Monday 13th May.\nEvaluating controls on deposition using Ichnology within the Eocene-aged mixed influence deltaic strata of the Mangahewa Formation (Taranaki Basin\, NZ): Lessons learned for application towards studies on mixed deltaic successions in the Bonaparte and Perth Basin. \nPresented by Fiona Burns (TASK Fronterra) \nThe Middle to Upper Eocene Mangahewa Formation forms a broadly NE-SW-oriented coastal facies belt which constitutes the main hydrocarbon reservoirs in the Taranaki Basin\, New Zealand. The Mangahewa Formation represents deposition within a deltaic setting that displays variable influences of wave\, fluvial and tidal processes\, with wave and fluvial processes dominant. Broadly\, the >1000 m thick formation constitutes a 2nd order progradational succession overlain by a retrogradational succession composed of 3rd and 4th order sequence sets. Arcuate delta and beach-ridge geometries can be imaged using seismic attribute data. Landwards of the shoreline systems\, lower delta plain with associated fluvial channel facies belts dominate. \nIn the Pohokura Field and Turangi area\, well developed\, wave-dominated\, fluvial influenced\, tide-affected (Wft) shoreface packages dominate the reservoir sections. The shoreface strata comprise cross-stratified sandstone-rich deposits with relatively high degrees of bioturbation and high ichnodiversity\, dominated by Ophiomorpha nodosa\, Ophiomorpha irregulaire\, Dactyloidites isp.\, Conichnus isp.\, and very large Asterosoma isp. Trace-fossil analysis enabled the subdivision of the shoreface strata into Upper\, Middle\, and Lower Shoreface (proximal and distal) packages. High stress levels are characteristic of the Distributary Channel packages\, which are either non-bioturbated or reveal sparse bioturbation by Skolithos linearis. Abundances of Ophiomorpha nodosa preferentially reworking clay drapes characterize the uppermost parts of tidally influenced channel packages locally. Firmground Thalassinoides isp. (Glossifungites ichnofacies) are common below channel bases. \nIchnologically\, the back barrier lagoonal heterolithic strata\, mainly interbedded with coal beds\, reveal highly stressed ichnofaunas. They were either non-bioturbated\, or contained Planolites montanus\, rare Chondrites isp. and/or Thalassinoides isp. Heterolithic strata representing down-drift strata also reveal similarly stressed ichnofaunas\, with many monospecific trace-fossil assemblages characteristic. In contrast\, non-stressed Delta Front heterolithic deposits are characterised by intensely bioturbated strata with maximum ichnodiversity. Once registered with the webinar software you will receive a reminder e-mail 1 hour beforehand. \nHydrogen Gas Storage Propsects in South Australian Basins \nPresented by Mark Bunch (University of Adelaide) \nAbstract \n\nSouth Australia hosts two petroleum production basins that are also expected to play a role in Geological Carbon Sequestration (GCS).  Each hosts CO2 disposal operations at differing scales.  Previous studies have demonstrated sealing capacities bounding structural closures to viable reservoir beneath the threshold depth for sustaining supercritical CO2 sufficient to accommodate millions of tonnes of CO2 annually.  Another prospective use for these reservoir systems has emerged: Underground Hydrogen Storage (UHS).  UHS will provide a secure\, scalable way to accommodate excess hydrogen production and fill temporary supply shortfall\, thereby stabilising the price of energy as the transition unfolds.  Hydrogen is a gas under all viable subsurface conditions so is invasive\, mobile and of low mass density.  Sealing capacity to hydrogen gas is approximately equivalent to that of methane meaning closures to natural gas fields should be viable for temporary hydrogen storage.  However\, there are other considerations such as how prone a containment system would be to hydrogen losses by degraded integrity under injection-production stress\, dissolution\, chemical reactions or microbial consumption.  This study evaluates viable UHS fairways within each basin at the helicopter-view scale.  The following factors are considered: hydrodynamic modification of closure; sealing unit thickness and capacity; a threshold depth that is both as shallow as possible but deep enough to limit microbial hydrogen consumption whilst ensuring a competitive hydrogen mass density.  When these factors are considered together\, the most prospective fairways are revealed that correspond with a subset of known petroleum field closures to proven reservoir intervals.

DESCRIPTION:Joint PESA NSW-ASEG NSW Technical Meeting\nStructure and burial history of the South Nicholson region\nThe South Nicholson Region (SNR)\, spanning the Northern Territory and Queensland\, has long been underexplored\, resulting in substantial gaps in our understanding of its geological past. This study aims to bridge these knowledge gaps by analyzing newly obtained data to reveal the region’s burial history and hydrocarbon potential. Our research presents a detailed sequence of geological events that have defined SNR\, utilizing insights from the newly drilled NDI Carrara1 well and the recent 17GA-SN1 seismic line. We have identified three main source rock intervals within the basin: one in the Paleozoic and two in the Proterozoic. We developed various scenarios to examine hydrocarbon migration within the basin. By 2022 the discovery was independently certified by McDaniel (A Canadian based Reserves Certifier with extensive experience in Cuba) to contain over 5 billion barrels of oil in place (best estimate) and 267 million barrels of recoverable oil (best estimate). \nIn 2023 Melbana followed up the Alameda-1 well with the successful Amistad-1 appraisal well which was designed to test the uppermost sheet of reservoirs in the Alameda field (Unit 1A\, 1B\, 2 and 3). \n• Unit 1A recovered 11.7° API oil with 3\,783 cP viscosity at surface from a 63 metre MD interval starting from 445 metres MD. Although flow rates at surface were not established 40 barrels of oil flowed unassisted to surface (through a 32/64” choke)\, exceeding expectations. \n• Unit 3 intercepted 200 metres updip and 500 metres to the south of the Alameda-1 intercept and confirmed moveable oil of a similar quality to Unit 1A. Testing indicated the potential to flow at ~750 bopd. The Unit 2 DST did not demonstrate moveable hydrocarbons to surface at the location tested. \n• Unit 1B recovered 19.4° API oil with 5.7 cP viscosity at surface from a 70 metre TVD perforated section – less than 20% of the total Net Pay for Unit 1B (when incorporating fractures). Stabilised unassisted flow rate to surface of 1\,235 bopd measured over 12 hours on a 36/64” choke\, peaking at 1\,903 bopd. \nLogged Net Pay for the entire Amistad Formation has been increased from 109 metres to 346 metres TVD – further increasing to 615 metres when the highly fractured limestones are incorporated (45% of the gross interval). Unit 1B has now been completed for future production\, whilst Units 1A and 3 have been suspended for potential future development and production. \nIn March 2024 McDaniel provided a resource update on the Unit 1B; \n• 46 MMbbls (P50) Contingent Resources – Development Pending in the eastern section of the greater Alameda field in the vicinity of the existing wells. \n• 90 MMbbls (P50) Prospective Resources of assigned in the western part of the field to reflect the uncertainty associated with being away from the existing wells. However\, McDaniels assigned a 70% chance of discovery to the prospective resource reflecting the low- risk nature of this area (given it is updip from the existing discoveries within the field). The risk associated with this area is based on reservoir deliverability. \n• Unit 1A is currently under assessment with McDaniels. \nMelbana is currently drilling Alameda-3\, a well designed to test the deeper Alameda (N) and Marti (I) sheets. Despite some preliminary research and examples overseas\, there remains a lack of established protocols and configurations for offshore Carbon Storage monitoring overlying storage sites and an absence of methods to establish environmental impact in the event of leakage. \nCSIRO in collaboration with ANLEC R&D and CarbonNet have undertaken research in the Gippsland region to inform the development of assurance monitoring approaches for subsea Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) operations to address three key technical assurance monitoring challenges: \n\nThe “signal-to-noise” problem: distinguishing CO2 release signatures from similar naturally occurring variability to reduce false alarm rates in future baseline monitoring design;\nCharacterising impact: determining the level of CO2 release that would be associated with environmental impact at a range of scales; and\nAttributing impact: distinguishing changes resulting from other drivers and pressures in multiple-use zones (e.g. climate change) from the activities of CCS operations.\n\nThe research has included a wide variety of approaches and technologies including the development and testing of fixed and mobile autonomous monitoring systems\, chemical and acoustic sensing and the collection of biological datasets. These data have been used in the development of biogeochemical models and to define possible integrated MM&V frameworks.  This presentation will discuss this and other MM&V research and how it could be applied for offshore CO2 storage projects around Australia. \n

DESCRIPTION:GDE Mapping Leading to Play Analysis\nin the onshore Otway Basin (SA)\nChris Cubitt (speaker)  & Paul Strong \nGeological Survey of South Australia\, Department for Energy and Mining \nhttp://www.energymining.sa.gov.au/ \nchris.cubitt@sa.gov.au; paul.strong@sa.gov.au \nThe Otway Basin is a Mesozoic rift basin located in southeastern South Australia and southwestern Victoria\, as well as extending offshore as part of Australia’s Southern Margin. Over 100 petroleum wells have been drilled since the 1890s wells\, and in 1987 Katnook 1 discovered economic gas in the Penola Trough\, with subsequent drilling leading to further discoveries and construction of a processing plant. To date almost 450\,000 barrels oil and 86Bcf of gas have been produced from the basin. \nThe modern Katnook Gas Plant (currently mothballed) has improved the economic viability of small gas discoveries to fuel both local gas markets and electricity generation. The SA Otway Basin is strategically connected to local southeast and statewide natural gas customers by the SEA Gas and SESA pipelines. \nAs part of a larger petroleum systems modelling (PSM) project gross depositional environment (GDE) maps were developed using 7\,965km of interpreted 2D seismic\, interval-specific isopachs with well log motifs\, regional seismic facies analysis and depositional environment (DE) interpretations from 772m of conventional core (23 wells). This mapping interpreted varied depositional systems\, including anoxic\, extensive ice-influenced lacustrine\, lacustrine turbidite\, extensive fluvial/lacustrine\, fluvial/flood plain and growth fault-bound ribbon-like alluvial fan apron environments. GDE maps were produced for the following six key intervals: Casterton Formation\, Lower Sawpit Shale (McEachern)\, Sawpit Sandstone\, Upper Sawpit Shale\, Pretty Hill Sandstone and Laira Formation. \nThe petroleum systems modelling showed for the first time significant oil and gas generation and expulsion in the lightly explored Robe and Tantanoola Troughs\, as well as the Penola Trough. \nPlay analysis has recently been conducted by DEM for all 8 intervals using the GDE mapping and the PSM results\, with the intention of stimulating exploration for hydrocarbons in this region\, including determining areas for a potential acreage release in 2024. Once registered with the webinar software you will receive a reminder e-mail 1 hour beforehand. \nPossible Compartmentalisation of the Kidson Sub-basin From New Geophysical Data\, and Regional Projects in Western Australia \nPresented by Alex Zhan (DEMIRS; Geological Survey and Resource Strategy Division) \nAbstract \n\nThe Kidson Sub-basin of the southern Canning Basin has long been considered as a relatively simple sag deepening into its depositional axis\, presumably in the central part of the sub-basin. This structural model is based on limited seismic coverage and well intersections near the flanks of the sub-basin\, and is here tentatively revised following integrated mapping with new regional data.  The data integration reveals a possible east-northeast oriented basement ridge with a structural amplitude up to 1000 m in the central part of the Kidson Sub-basin. This ridge possibly divides the Kidson Sub-basin into two distinct parts and potentially is a significant feature with extensive implications for hydrocarbon\, CO2 sequestration\, natural hydrogen\, helium and mineral prospectivities of the sub-basin. Although the basement ridge is supported by regional changes in depositional facies and marginal seismic data\, the existence of such elevated feature remains highly uncertain in the absence of a seismic profile across the ridge. Further work is required to confirm its presence and de-risk exploration efforts.

DESCRIPTION:This month PESA Queensland welcomes Dr. Michael Curtis to present a technical luncheon looking at the fascinating volcanic history of the Carnarvon Basin and implications for exploration. \nThe Technical Lunch will be held at the Brisbane Hilton Hotel\, in Room 83 (Level 8). \nFor detailed directions\, see explanation below. \nPlease note the Early Bird ticket pricing cut-off times described below. \n\n\n\nPresentation:\nMega-intrusions and Volcanic ruins: A tour of magmatism in the Carnarvon Basin\, WA\n\n\nVenue:\nHilton Hotel Brisbane\, 190 Elizabeth Street\, Brisbane QLD 4000\nRoom 83\, Level 8\n(Detailed directions below)\n\n\nDate & Time:\nThursday\, 20 June 12:15 PM\n\n\n\n  \nPresentation Abstract: \nThe Northern Carnarvon Basin formed as a result of Late Jurassic rifting\, and Early Cretaceous breakup of Greater India from the Australian continent.  Magma was emplaced into the Exmouth Plateau and Exmouth Sub-Basin over an area of ~50\,000 km2.  Until recently the spatial distribution of this igneous system\, and hence its potential impact on regional petroleum systems\, was relatively unknown.  The only references to the magmatic system were 1990s ‘blob’ maps created using 100+ km spaced 2D seismic\, magnetic and gravity data\, and references of penetrations of igneous rocks in well completion reports from ~8 wells and boreholes. \nNew interpretive work (the essence of my PhD)\, utilising SLB & TGS ultra-broadband 3D seismic data covering much of the Exmouth Plateau and Exmouth Subbasin\, reveals the igneous system in all its glory!  In this talk we will tour both its intrusive and extrusive components\, asking why it is the way it is and what its current configuration might have meant for the development of Carnarvon Basin petroleum systems.  We will attempt to answer why some intrusions are of record-breaking proportions (170+ km long)\, while others nearby are much much smaller (3 to 5 km diameter).  We’ll also look at the eroded ruins of volcanoes (that until recently hadn’t been known to exist at all) and consider the original size of the volcanic complex\, and the implications of volcano erosion on regional reservoir quality. \nTime permitting\, we’ll round off with an example or two of how not to drill in igneous affected areas. \n\nTickets for the Technical Luncheon can be purchased below. \nPlease be advised of the early bird cut-off date. \nEarly bird pricing will now remain available up until Monday\, 17 June 12:00 PM  after which\, standard pricing will come into effect. \nTo avoid disappointment please register before that date and time. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPESA Members – $55\nNon-Members – $75\nStudent / Retired Members – $30\n\n\n\n\n\nLate ticket sales up to Wednesday\, 19 June 12:00PM will be available for $95 for all tickets – subject to availability. DESCRIPTION:PESA NSW July Technical Meeting\nFinding new sources of gas to meet demand for NSW\nNSW business and retail consumers require approximately 120 PJ of natural gas per year. Historically\, gas supply has relied on traditional suppliers in the Cooper Basin\, South Australia\, the Gippsland Basin\, and Victoria along with AGL Energy’s Camden Gas Project (5% of NSW requirements)\, to supply NSW’s gas needs. The role of natural gas in transforming to net zero in NSW is poorly understood whilst the gas markets attempt to avoid gas shortages as both Gippsland and Copper Basin fields decline below critical thresholds. \nThe recently announced Labour Government’s Future Gas Strategy is the latest in a long line of policies/statements/regulations attempting to promote new gas field development against a backdrop of declining fossil fuel investment and public sentiment. \nThe talk will examine a number of sedimentary basin in NSW including conventional and coal seam gas projects in the Sydney\, Gloucester and Gunnedah Basins through the author’s unique perspective on what to look for and assess these project’s key technical risks in an attempt to explain where NSW’s next gas supply could come from.

Based on publicly available data\, at 1 million tonnes per annum the Project is sufficiently sized to capture and permanently store the emissions associated with the onshore Perth basin gas projects and the Cockburn Dongara quicklime facility. \n\nThe CHCCS operation enables the production of blue hydrogen and ammonia with the proposed hydrogen production technology integrating the production of green hydrogen/ammonia. Importantly the Project will be designed to incorporate the future supply of hydrogen into the WA domestic market.

Initially\, CCS projects were primarily onshore in eastern Australia\, focusing on sequestering CO2 from power generation. By 2011\, the focus had shifted dramatically. Despite regulatory advancements\, the number of active projects decreased between 2011 and 2020. However\, policy shifts such as the Federal government’s net-zero emissions target by 2050 and the introduction of the revised Safeguard Mechanism in 2023 spurred a resurgence in proposed CCS projects\, particularly for LNG and hard-to-abate emission mitigation. Currently\, with record numbers of planned projects\, the need for regulatory reform is evident. The existing petroleum-based CCS regulatory framework poses inefficiencies\, which are further complicated by interactions with Australia’s obligations under international agreements. This complexity emphasises the necessity for regulations tailored to contemporary CCS project realities to meet Australia’s emission reduction commitments. \n

Switzerland produces about one third of its power with nuclear energy. The volume of high- medium- and low-level radioactive waste of over sixty years of production is in the same order as toxic heavy metal waste from industry and consumption. Radioactive waste has a precisely determined half-life and can be stored and monitored in controlled containments. In contrast\, heavy metal waste is diffusely distributed\, is not inventoried\, and is of indefinite toxicity.\nNagra\, the Swiss cooperative for the disposal of radioactive waste has explored for a suitable location in various rock formations throughout Switzerland. DESCRIPTION:2024 Birdsall-Dreiss Distinguished Lecturer\nDr. Ben Rostron\nProfessor Emeritus of Earth & Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Alberta\n\nAbstract:\nGeology and hydrogeology at AQUISTORE: Canada’s first CO2 storage project associated with a commercial-scale coal-fired power plant The Aquistore research project is part of SaskPower’s Boundary Dam Integrated Carbon Capture and Storage project in Estevan\, Saskatchewan\, Canada. Carbon dioxide is captured from the Boundary Dam coal-fired power generation station and transported via underground pipeline to both the Weyburn oil field for EOR\, and to a 3400 m deep injection well at Aquistore. Initial CO2 injection at Aquistore took place in April 2015\, and through August 2023 more than 500\,000 tonnes have been injected. Geology and hydrogeology have played a key role in the entire project using both pre-existing and newly-acquired data. Hydrogeological characterization efforts were divided into four parts: regional hydrogeological and hydrochemical mapping of the site; hydraulic characterization of the storage zone during drilling/testing of the 3400m deep injection and nearby 3400m deep observation well; installation of an extensive shallow groundwater monitoring network; and ongoing hydrogeological and hydrochemical monitoring of the shallow groundwater in the area. All of the geological and hydrogeological characterization results indicate strongly favourable conditions for geological storage at the site: there are no significant faults in the immediate area of the storage site; the regional sealing formation is continuous in the area; the reservoir is not adversely affected by knolls on the surface of the underlying Precambrian crystalline basement; and the shallow groundwater and soil gas horizons do not appear to be hydraulically connected to the deep injection horizons in the subsurface. These results were subsequently used for project planning\, risk assessment\, and permitting of the site; demonstrating the overall storage integrity; and for Measurement\, Monitoring\, and Verification of CO2 storage for regulatory and public assurance. People have no real idea just how massively complicated the Grid actually is and until AEMO became active in seeking to educate Australians just how important their role is\, especially on the East Coast\, the Grid was something of a Black Hole manipulated by the political elements of our society. AEMO has issued in its two recent Reports to Parliament (published widely) extremely worrying determinations that the East Coast of Australia is most likely going to suffer energy black-outs in the coldest and hottest months of 2025 through 2027. Our speaker will be addressing these critical issues along with the role gas will play in filling holes during downturns in electricity generation.

Once registered with the webinar software you will receive a reminder e-mail 1 hour beforehand. \nDeploying Passive/Microseismic Technology to Monitor Subsurface Reservoirs During CO2 Injection \nPresented by Roy Bitrus (TenzorGEO) \nAbstract \n\nTenzorGEO aim to advance passive seismic CO2 monitoring technology to enhance environmental stewardship in carbon capture and storage\, and together with operator partners ADNOC have deployed the technology in the Middle East. The results showcase the ability of passive seismic data to verify the containment of CO2 and serve as an early warning system and stability indicator for injected CO2. The solution known as Cuttlefish Carbon Guard (CCG) integrates both passive seismic and microseismic methods with a wider frequency spectrum from 0 – >100Hz to locate microseismic events\, analyse the integrity of the caprock and the storage reservoir\, and analyse spectral responses due to CO2 saturation velocity changes to visualise the reservoir and injected CO2. \nMethod: \nTo develop and standardise acquisition\, processing and interpretation of microseismic data acquired during CO2 monitoring projects the following areas was focused on: Data acquisition\, method workflow\, software and algorithm testing as well as development. \nData Acquisition: Here\, an effective combination of sensor types 1C and 3C were designed and deployed as patches in a grid array. This helped achieve an integrated workflow with reduced volume of acquired data and improved SNR. Data acquired is in the frequency range of 0.1 – >100Hz with tests performed onsite prior to acquisition to determine and suppress surface waves. \nMethod Workflow: Integrate and adapt two standalone passive seismic methods into one solution capable of analysing\, filtering\, processing and interpreting data to visualise the storage reservoir and injected CO2. \nMethod A aims to locate the microseismic events and determine the moment tensor in the reservoir rock – i.e. in response to changes in pressure\, fluid displacement\, pore fluid saturation\, reactivation of fractures and filtration channels.\nAdditionally\, Method B analyses the spectral response of vertically directed P-waves from ambient background microseismic noise (0.1 – 10 Hz) to delineate CO2 saturated rock due to velocity changes. \nSoftware: Finally\, test the capability of the software by acquiring relevant passive seismic data from a CO2 injection project in a field trial with ADNOC. The data acquired will feed into the model and educate the interpretation team as they aim to standardise procedure and application of the solution. \nConclusions: \nThe field project highlights the capability of an integrated passive/microseismic solution\, paving the way for standardized procedures in the measurement\, monitoring and verification (MMV) sector of the industry. The project underscores the technology’s potential to add cost\, security and innovative value while monitoring subsurface reservoir integrity and track CO2 velocity changes. The continuous monitoring nature of the technology can help to increase public and stakeholder confidence.

DESCRIPTION:Salt Cavern storage potential of the Polda Basin\, South Australia\nGlenn Toogood\, entX\, and Tim Rady\, Geomorph Energy\n\nThe Polda Basin is a Neoproterozoic to Jurassic sedimentary basin\, extending from the Great Australian Bight to the central Eyre Peninsula\, South Australia. It has previously been explored for petroleum\, uranium\, coal\, groundwater\, base metals\, potash and diamonds. There has been renewed interest in the Polda Basin for its underground gas storage potential in salt caverns\, given that Mercury-1 encountered >1200m of massive halite within Neoproterozoic red beds in the central offshore basin.\nentX Limited were granted Gas Storage Exploration Licences (GSEL) 781 and 784 and have been actively studying the basin to assess the likelihood of the proven offshore salt extending onshore\, where it may be engineered into caverns for underground gas storage (UGS) sites. UGS can provide gigawatt-scale storage of H2 gas and significantly reduce the levelized cost of storage. Such an asset would provide key advantages to H2 project concepts\, including DRI green steel from magnetite\, green ammonia and biofuels.\nTo assess the prospectivity for salt onshore and correlate the stratigraphy across the basin\, entX have taken a multi-disciplinary approach\, reviewing all available data and literature and integrating seismic reprocessing\, ICP-MS/OES and XRF analysis\, visual core and cuttings interpretation\, core density measurements\, spectral scanning and gravity forward modelling. Following this work\, the onshore Polda Basin has emerged as highly prospective for both salt and natural hydrogen. Once registered with the webinar software you will receive a reminder e-mail 1 hour beforehand. \nSediment Provenance Analysis of the Early Permian Reservoirs of the Perth Basin \nPresented by Stuart Munday (Chemostrat) \nAbstract \n\nThe sediment provenance of Early Permian reservoirs (‘Kingia’ and High Cliff sandstones) of the onshore North Perth Basin is poorly understood. Bulk rock inorganic geochemistry\, detrital zircon geochronology and heavy mineral data have been used to assess spatial and temporal changes in provenance in the vicinity of the Waitsia\, Lockyer Deep\, West Erregulla and Beharra Springs Deep discoveries. The geochemical data provides a chemostratigraphic framework for the Early Permian that can be confidently correlated throughout the basin. The detrital zircon and Raman data have recognised significant regional variabilities. The zircon data defines western and eastern regions that were separated and/or infilled by different depositional systems\, likely defined by the Mountain Bridge Fault. Raman analysis demonstrates that the High Cliff and ‘Kingia’ sediments in the vicinity of Waitsia have different zircon age populations and heavy mineral assemblages\, with the ‘Kingia sandstone’ dominated by apatite indicating access to a granitic source at this time. This is poorly represented by wells in the northern Dongara Terrace and Allanooka Terrace\, where sediments are dominated by garnet. Analysis of Lockyer Deep and West Erregulla discovery wells in the northern Dandaragan Trough\, also demonstrate only minor amounts of apatite\, but also include a significant mafic component\, the source of which is uncertain. The geochemical data demonstrates that the top of these reservoirs is defined by a highly consistent change in provenance\, coincident with a switch to garnet-rich sediments and different dominant zircon age populations.

DESCRIPTION:PESA NSW September Technical Meeting\nMelbana in Cuba: the Amistad-1 success story\nMelbana Energy drilled the Alameda-1 discovery well in onshore Cuba in 2021.  By 2022 the discovery was independently certified by McDaniel (A Canadian based Reserves Certifier with extensive experience in Cuba) to contain over 5 billion barrels of oil in place (best estimate) and 267 million barrels of recoverable oil (best estimate). \nIn 2023 Melbana followed up the Alameda-1 well with the successful Amistad-1 appraisal well which was designed to test the uppermost sheet of reservoirs in the Alameda field (Unit 1A\, 1B\, 2 and 3). \n\nUnit 1A recovered 11.7° API oil with 3\,783 cP viscosity at surface from a 63 metre MD interval starting from 445 metres MD. Although flow rates at surface were not established 40 barrels of oil flowed unassisted to surface (through a 32/64” choke)\, exceeding expectations.\nUnit 3 intercepted 200 metres updip and 500 metres to the south of the Alameda-1 intercept and confirmed moveable oil of a similar quality to Unit 1A. Testing indicated the potential to flow at ~750 bopd. The Unit 2 DST did not demonstrate moveable hydrocarbons to surface at the location tested.\nUnit 1B recovered 19.4° API oil with 5.7 cP viscosity at surface from a 70 metre TVD perforated section – less than 20% of the total Net Pay for Unit 1B (when incorporating fractures). Stabilised unassisted flow rate to surface of 1\,235 bopd measured over 12 hours on a 36/64” choke\, peaking at 1\,903 bopd.\n\nLogged Net Pay for the entire Amistad Formation is 346 metres TVD using 9% porosity\, 50% Sw and 40% VSh cutoffs this  net pay increases to 615 metres when the highly fractured limestones are incorporated (45% of the gross interval). Flow from the fractured interval has been proven by acquisition of production logs validating the incorporation of fractures into the net pay equation. \nUnit 1B has now been completed for future production\, whilst Units 1A and 3 have been suspended for potential future development and production. \nIn March 2024 McDaniel provided a resource update on the Unit 1B; \n\n46 MMbbls (P50) Contingent Resources – Development Pending in the eastern section of the greater Alameda field in the vicinity of the existing wells.\n90 MMbbls (P50) Prospective Resources of assigned in the western part of the field to reflect the uncertainty associated with being away from the existing wells. However\, McDaniels assigned a 70% chance of discovery to the prospective resource reflecting the low- risk nature of this area (given it is updip from the existing discoveries within the field). The risk associated with this area is based on reservoir deliverability.\n\nA preliminary field development plan is being developed for exploitation of Unit1B and an additional two wells focussing purely on production from Unit1B are being planned with the aim of initiating international oil export from Cuba.

It hosts the Kutubu Oil Field Developments and the PNG LNG project\, as well as several gas fields that are planned to be developed in the coming years\, but its southeastern extension\, the Torres Sub-Basin\, remains undrilled. Modern proprietary and regional multi-client seismic data in the offshore Torres Sub-Basin is now revealing an active Petroleum system with a generating Late Cretaceous Source rock and three main identified play types: \n\nMiocene deep-water clastics in a large submarine Miocene to Pliocene foldbelt\nPinch-out plays of Miocene to Pliocene age against a basement high\nPalaeogene carbonate build-ups on basement highs\n\nThis presentation will focus on the Miocene to Pliocene submarine foldbelt plays within the Larus Energy-operated PPL579 license area that was covered by the Nanamarope 3D broadband PSDM seismic survey (acquired in 2023 by Larus Energy and Searcher). The pinch-out play is within the recently awarded Larus Energy-operated PPL695 license in the foreland basin south of the foldbelt\, while TotalEnergies is proposing to test the Palaeogene carbonate play with the Mailu-1 well in 2025. \nThe Nanamarope 3D seismic provides high-resolution images of large-scale submarine fan complexes\, deposited during the Mid-Miocene\, linked to active tectonism and the formation of the proto–Owen Stanley Range. The images suggest significant reworking of these turbidite systems by bottom currents into likely high reservoir quality contourite deposits with a wide spectrum of features formed during synchronous and asynchronous interaction of turbidity flows and bottom current activity. It is observed that bottom currents provide a mechanism to redistribute coarser-grained material up-slope and beyond the limits of the traditional turbidite fairway. \nThe new 3D seismic has allowed Larus to complete detailed structural mapping\, update GDE interpretations\, identify evidence for hydrocarbon migration and integrate petroleum systems and seismic synthetic forward modelling to derisk the prospectivity.
