We will highlight key differences\, in terms of phase behaviour\, between CO2 and other fluids more typically encountered in oil and gas operations\, and the implications these have on multiphase flow in the reservoir. The main flow mechanisms\, as well as physical scaling laws incorporating capillarity\, buoyancy and viscosity will be discussed and used to analyse the flow regimes typically encountered in the field. The talk will end with discussion on dissolution\, residual\, and mineral trapping mechanisms.

It was a 2 boat survey – both clapped out coastal freighters MV Merino and MV Paul Markson. \nAn incident filled trip. \nBallasting the kerosene filled streamer with lead and gaffer tape at midnight on a pitching deck 30ft above the water with no rails whatsoever (OHS was an unknown acronym). Deck awash with kero which rotted all our footwear (and feet). \nSkipper was a drunk\, Party Chief was an idiot. \n8500 foot streamer cut in half by a freighter because the skipper couldn’t signal properly with his Aldis lamp (he could hardly hold it!). \nStreamer sections blown up because the shooting boat couldn’t keep position. \nStreamer sections bitten by sharks. \nSpanish deckhand almost dead from carbon tetrachloride poisoning because he couldn’t tell anyone what was wrong. \nDrunk found down in the hull complete with wine flagon just before we headed to sea. \nHeading back to Portland in a Force 10 gale knowing that the Sedco 135G had slipped its tow and was somewhere out in front of us. \nAnd to cap it all\, we found that 50% of our powder (about 25 tons) would sometimes not explode so it was jettisoned overboard – 1\,000 yellow canisters bobbing off into the Tasman Sea.

The concept of an Enviro-Pad 3D is to provide 3D imaging over a proposed lateral well path faster and cheaper than traditional 3D surface seismic. SUMMARY:PESA SA/NT October Technical Luncheon The CO2 Storage Resources Management System
DESCRIPTION:The CO2 Storage Resources Management System (SRMS): what it is and how it was applied at Moomba\nJohn Kaldi\nEmeritus Professor & CO2CRC Distinguished Scientist\nUniversity of Adelaide \nPaul Lyford\nReserves & Resources Manager\nSantos Limited \n  \nAbstract\n\nThis talk aims to create awareness of the recently published Guidelines for Applications of the CO2 Storage Resources Management System (SRMS). The SRMS was first published in 2017 and is now sponsored by the world’s foremost industry-focused professional societies\, including SPE\, AAPG\, SEG\, SPWLA\, EAGE\, SPEE and WPC. The Guidelines were released in June 2022 and are available from the SPE bookstore. Although a voluntary system\, the intent is that regulators\, government departments\, and financiers will be able to draw upon the experience of managing petroleum resources to advise on the management of carbon dioxide storage resources. \nThe SRMS is modelled on the Petroleum Resource Management System (PRMS). This was a deliberate choice aimed at making the development of storage resources clearer by drawing parallels with the well-known and well-understood process of maturing petroleum resources. The need to show that injected CO2 can be contained in a geologic formation is the key difference between exploring for CO2 storage resources and exploring for petroleum accumulations. \nAccording to the SRMS\, a CO2 storage resource is defined as the quantity (mass or volume) of CO2 that can be stored in a geologic formation. This storage can be in geologic structures (e.g.\, an anticline) or in regionally extensive dipping geologic formations. The storage mechanisms are geologic (structural and stratigraphic)\, residual\, solubility\, and mineral trapping\, and an inherent consideration in any storage resources is that displaced fluids (e.g.\, brine or hydrocarbons) are managed. \nA significant case study from Santos’ Moomba CCS project in the Cooper Basin is provided to demonstrate incorporation of SRMS in storage resource assessments. Once registered with the webinar software you will receive a reminder e-mail 1 hour beforehand. \n  \n  \nCCS Knowledge Transfer Series: Installment 3 \nReservoir Engineering and Simulation for CCS – Jonathan Ennis-King (CSIRO) \nAbstract \n\nThe practice of reservoir engineering and simulation in CCS begins with the standard physics of multiphase flow in porous media\, but with CO2-specific properties to be represented\, especially the solubility of CO2 in brine and the matching changes in brine density\, and relative permeability effects. Four major code comparison studies have been carried out over the last twenty years\, mostly to cross-validate simulator performance (of both people and software)\, as well as the most recent comparison with laboratory experiments. \nThe questions addressed by CCS simulation are quite distinct from most hydrocarbon recovery work: one is modelling large volumes of CO2 injection (millions of tonnes) into saline formations\, where the resulting CO2 plume migrates laterally over distances of kilometres\, and in timeframes of up to a thousand years after injection ceases. Feasibility studies need to address the range of uncertainties in the plume footprint\, which stem from the uncertainties in geological characterisation of surface topography\, sub-seismic faults\, and permeability heterogeneity both laterally and vertically. The pressures increase due to injection may necessitate the design of relief wells. Simulations are needed to design monitoring and verification plans\, and to interpret the data which is gathered. Regulatory compliance requires forward predictions of plume evolution\, which can be checked against monitoring results to ensure the CO2 is ‘behaving as predicted’. It may also be necessary to assess the risk of CO2 injection affecting other resources\, such as groundwater\, hydrocarbons\, geothermal or storage projects (for natural gas or hydrogen). \nThe least conventional aspects of CCS simulation involve the coupling of fluid flow to additional physics. Thermal effects are important in the wellbore and the near-well environment\, with the cooling effects of injection reducing the maximum allowable injection pressure. Geochemical interactions with the reservoir rock or seal can potentially aid storage by mineralising CO2\, and this is the focus of in-situ carbonation research. Injection can also induce seismicity\, and this potential can be modelled as well as monitored during operations. Finally\, the rise of artificial intelligence and machine learning has prompted research into ways to accelerate the modelling process and allow fast history-matching. \nOverall\, CCS provides many fascinating challenges for subsurface modelling\, and the scope for this work is likely to expand significantly in Australia as more projects progress through feasibility studies towards implementation.

The new rules of the front end of the Calcutta are as follows: \nEvery person registered and attending on the day of the meeting (including speakers) receives an option to purchase a ticket in the PESA Melbourne Cup (Sweep);\nEvery person above then has the choice to either exercise the option and purchase a ticket in the sweep for $40 or sell the option to the highest bidder\, who must then exercise the option (i.e. and pay the $40 to the auction team);\nThe price paid to buy an option goes to the original option holder;\nThe $40 goes to auction team as a pot for the race to the distributed between first\, second and third horses;\nWith 24 horses the pot should be $960;\nThe names of the persons exercising the options will be inserted into a hat and then drawn against horses drawn out of another hat;\n1/ If the number of exercised options is equal to the number of starters in the Melbourne Cup\, then every exercised option will receive a horse in the sweep;\n2/ If the number of exercised options is less than the number of starters\, then all the names of the registered persons attending will go back into the draw for the remaining horses;\n3/ If the number of exercised options is greater than the number of starters\, then not all exercised option owners will receive a horse in the sweep;\nOnce the owners of all the horses in the field are known\, then the call of the card and the normal Calcutta bidding process can begin as usual based on the declared pot. \nBest advice is to bring along some cash (no credit card facilities available in the Adams Room)\, a willingness to have a lot of fun and front up at the Masonic Club (also known as the Castlereagh Boutique Hotel) on Tuesday 7 November 2023 and get together with all your old friends for a great days entertainment.

Once registered with the webinar software you will receive a reminder e-mail 1 hour beforehand. \nSeismic Source Rock Global Tour \nPresented by Neil Hodgson (Searcher) \nAbstract \n\n“There are no source rocks south of the Walvis Ridge” was not an uncommon phrase which sounded in the industry until quite recently. This myth was finally busted in 2022 when Shell and Total Energies respectively announced the giant Graff and Venus discoveries in the Orange Basin offshore Namibia. This was the grand finale of a long-standing debate in which model and data fought a hard battle. On the one hand\, there was a model that did not support the presence\, quality and maturity of source rocks over oceanic crust. On the other hand\, the novel approach of applying seismic source rock characterization in a frontier basin was pointing to the presence of a world class source rock generating hydrocarbons migrating into large traps (Rodriguez et al.\, 2023 EAGE Uruguay) \nIn the Loseth et al.\, 2011 publication“Can hydrocarbon source rocks be identified on seismic data?” compelling evidence using a significant amount of North Sea seismic and well data indicated that seismic data can be used to identify source rocks. \nUsing a full source rock de-risking methodology and access to a large global seismic dataset has enabled identification of source rocks on seismic. This presentation will be a guided tour around the seismic expression of source rocks in frontier basins around the world.

DESCRIPTION:Coorikiana Sandstone Play\, Cooper Basin region\nCarmine Grasso \nSouth Australia’s Department for Energy and Mining (DEM) \n  \nAbstract\n\nPetroleum exploration of the Cooper/Eromanga basin commenced in 1954 with the granting of an exploration licence to Santos\, the dominant focus for operators being gas resources of the deeper Permian reservoirs of the Cooper Basin\, which are overlain by the younger shallower Eromanga Basin. However\, a recent industry focus to specifically target the shallower reservoirs\, viz.\, Coorikiana Sandstone of the Eromanga Basin\, has yielded rewarding outcomes\, thus adding to the Cooper/Eromanga basin reputation as Australia’s most prolific onshore oil and gas basin. \nThe early Cretaceous Coorikiana Sandstone has been proven to be a bona fide exploration\, appraisal and development target in the South Australian sector of the Cooper/Eromanga basin. This presentation of the play is aimed at providing explorers with a better understanding of the geology and potential importance of these regressive marine shoreface sandstone reservoirs. Recent activity in the South Australian portion of the Cooper/Eromanga basin has proven successful via low-cost shallow drilling campaigns\, focusing on delivering additional production rate and reserves for both oil and gas. Once registered with the webinar software you will receive a reminder e-mail 1 hour beforehand. \n  \n  \nCCS Knowledge Transfer Series: Installment 4 \nStorage Resource Estimation and Injection Strategies – What’s Different About CCS? – Karsten Michael (CSIRO) \nAbstract \n\nFor the successful implementation and regulation of CO2 geological storage operations\, it is important to establish a reliable definition\, classification\, and estimation of storage resources.  For this purpose\, the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) released the CO2 Storage Resources Management System (SRMS) following the concept of its industry-standard Petroleum Resources Management System (PRMS). The SRMS considers both technical and commercial factors and the major storage resource classes with increasing data knowledge and chance of commerciality are: Inaccessible Storage Resources\, Prospective Storage Resources\, Contingent Storage Resources\, Capacity\, and Stored. The volumetric estimation of storage resources involves the interpretation of the subsurface which has an inherent degree of uncertainty. Fundamental for elevating storage resources to a storage capacity is the evaluation of containment of the stored CO2 and\, most importantly\, injectivity considerations. Here\, bigger is not necessarily better. Rather the capacity of a commercial CO2 storage operation needs to be sufficient to accept the planned volume of CO2 with emphasis on injection efficiency\, safety and economics. Hence\, actual injection or formation tests and containment assessment must provide a high confidence in the commercial injectability of the characterised geologic formation. Injectivity is constrained by the allowable bottom hole pressure\, which should be safely below the reservoir fracture pressure or the pressure capable to activate any faults in the vicinity of the storage complex. Storage capacity could be increased\, at a cost\, by managing reservoir pressure through water production wells. Other than in petroleum operations\, where production wells are generally completed at the top of the reservoir for production efficiency\, CO2 injectors placed at the bottom or at the downdip portion of the storage complex may be the most efficient strategy for achieving maximum storage capacity.

The IEA calculated worldwide storage-rates in 2021 of approximately 40 Mt of CO2 per year but this needs to be upscaled to 7.6Gt of CO2 per year by 2050. To support this growth in capture technology\, we need an acceleration in new CO2 storage project developments. In this course\, we review the science and technology underpinning CO2 storage in deep saline aquifer formations using insights from several industrial-scale projects. We analyze the main factors that limit storage capacity — constraints governed by flow dynamics\, injectivity\, pressure development\, and geomechanics. Then\, this physical basis provides a framework for determining how to optimize monitoring methods. Using the latest portfolio of geophysical methods for smart and cost-effective monitoring at the surface and downhole (including conventional seismic acquisition\, passive seismic listening\, and fibre-optic sensing)\, we discuss how short- and long-term storage assurance can be demonstrated with high levels of confidence. \nNext\, we address the question of what is needed to achieve climate-significant scales of CCS deployment. Although technically achievable\, the current socio-economic framing often makes storage project execution difficult in practice. By building technical confidence in project execution\, we may be able to ‘turn the dial’ and realize the gigatonne levels of storage needed over the coming decades. \nQuestions answered in this course:\n\nWhat are the main processes involved in the geologic storage of CO2?\nHow should we estimate CO2 storage capacity?\nWhat is the physical basis for estimates of storage efficiency?\nWhat are the constraints to storage? When does injectivity matter? Are pressure limits the main issue?\nWhat are the geomechanical limits? Should we expect significant levels of induced seismicity?\nHow can we optimize monitoring methods to make them smart and cost-effective?\nHow reliable is time-lapse seismic monitoring for detecting small CO2 volumes in the subsurface?\nHow can fibre-optic sensing (DAS) reduce the costs and footprints of monitoring schemes?\nHow can we apply advanced analysis (e.g.\, FWI) for monitoring using sparse acquisitions?\nHow can we assure long-term containment? Managers\, team leaders\, and business developers also should find most of the material accessible. For subsurface specialists\, the focus is on learning across disciplines (e.g.\, how might flow analysis affect site selection choices or how ‘geological details’ impact the engineering assessment).  With a strong focus on advanced geophysical monitoring (especially time-lapse seismic)\, geophysicists will find the course helpful for designing and interpreting seismic monitoring data sets. This course does not require advanced mathematical knowledge\, although several governing equations are introduced and used. The main objective is to provide an intuitive understanding of the geoscience\, physics\, and geophysics of CO2 storage in saline aquifers. Familiarity with integrated 3D subsurface modelling and seismic interpretation tools will be an advantage but is not essential.

DESCRIPTION:Onshore Gippsland CSG Potential – Myth or Massive?\nThe onshore Gippsland hydrocarbon province has always been a poor cousin to the prolific offshore discoveries of gas and oil. It has been\, however\, the powerhouse of Victoria driven by the huge open-cut brown coal deposits in the Latrobe Valley. Following conventional gas discoveries in the Strzelecki Group at Trifon\, Gangell and Wombat\, attention turned to the shallower\, but deeper than the mined seams\, Traralgon brown coals as candidates for methane extraction from immature\, wet lignite. \nEarly test drilling was carried out in 2005\, but when Exxon entered the area in 2012\, the press perception of easily extracted gas gained widespread publicity in the national press. This presentation describes the technical history of exploration for brown coal CSG\, compared with the public perception of its potential and with the added complication of Victorian Government reaction and legislation.

However\, CCUS technologies are still in their infancy. The IEA calculated worldwide storage-rates in 2021 of approximately 40 Mt of CO2 per year but this needs to be upscaled to 7.6Gt of CO2 per year by 2050. DESCRIPTION:Revisiting the rocks and seismic discovers turbidites and a new exploration play in the Penola Trough\, Otway Basin\, South Australia\nSharon Tiainen\, South Australia’s Department for Energy and Mining (DEM)\, and Rob Kirk\, Consultant \n  \nAbstract\n\nThis rock-based and seismic-backed turbidite interpretation provides an alternative to the current alluvial channel/crevasse splay model for reservoir deposition and as such presents a new exploration play. Further the reservoirs immediate lateral association with gas/oil-prone source rocks and seals in the clay-rich lithologies potentially provide for stratigraphic trapping in addition to the previously targeted fault-controlled structural traps. Once registered with the webinar software you will receive a reminder e-mail 1 hour beforehand. \n  \n  \nCCS Knowledge Transfer Series: Installment 6 \nLeakage Risk and Potential Impact on Groundwater – What’s Different About CCS? – Karsten Michael (CSIRO) \nAbstract \n\nLike any oil and gas operation\, CCS projects need to assess environmental impacts\, including potential impacts on groundwater. The identification of potential leakage pathways and approximation of leakage rates are a critical part of the site selection process and help to minimise material impacts on the environment. Compromised well or subsurface integrity issues may facilitate the migration or release of CO2 out of its primary storage container into shallow groundwater. However\, the probability of leakage via geological features when storing CO2 at well-characterised sites is extremely low. While the probability of compromised well integrity occurrence based on petroleum industry experience is also extremely low\, the probability of well leakage increases with the number of active and inactive wells within the area of the injected CO2 plume. However\, well leakage is relatively easily detected and well mitigation and remediation technologies are well-established. Generally\, multiple barriers and partial migration into various intervening aquifers\, as well as buffering\, dissolution and residual saturation will reduce the total volume ending up in groundwater. \nCarbon dioxide itself is not considered a pollutant or contaminant in groundwater and is not considered as a parameter for water quality in most groundwater jurisdictions. However\, increased CO2 concentrations could reduce the pH of groundwater\, i.e.\, increase its acidity\, and thereby enhance geochemical reactions between groundwater and aquifer sediments\, potentially resulting in release and mobilization of toxic trace metals. Extremely high concentrations of CO2 in groundwater would be required to cause material harm to the environment as demonstrated in exceptional cases of natural CO2 leakage. Such conditions are improbable in the case of CO2 geological storage. Also\, the remobilisation of other harmful substance as result of CO2 leakage has been investigated in many laboratory and field experiments\, and material impacts are generally deemed unlikely under CO2 leakage conditions from a well-characterised and monitored geological storage project. The already low risk of impacts on potable groundwater due to CO2 leakage can be further minimised by early leakage detection before reaching groundwater wells; timely stop of injection and remediation.

SUMMARY:PESA SA/NT March Luncheon- Hydrogen Gas Storage Prospects in South Australian Petroleum Basins
DESCRIPTION:Hydrogen Gas Storage Prospects in South Australian Petroleum Basins\nMarch Bunch\,University of Adelaide \n  \nAbstract\n\nSouth Australia hosts two petroleum production basins that are also expected to play a role in Geological Carbon Sequestration (GCS).  Each hosts CO2 disposal operations at differing scales.  Previous studies have demonstrated sealing capacities bounding structural closures to viable reservoir beneath the threshold depth for sustaining supercritical CO2 sufficient to accommodate millions of tonnes of CO2 annually.  Another prospective use for these reservoir systems has emerged: Underground Hydrogen Storage (UHS).  UHS will provide a secure\, scalable way to accommodate excess hydrogen production and fill temporary supply shortfall\, thereby stabilising the price of energy as the transition unfolds.  Hydrogen is a gas under all viable subsurface conditions so is invasive\, mobile and of low mass density.  Sealing capacity to hydrogen gas is approximately equivalent to that of methane meaning closures to natural gas fields should be viable for temporary hydrogen storage.  However\, there are other considerations such as how prone a containment system would be to hydrogen losses by degraded integrity under injection-production stress\, dissolution\, chemical reactions or microbial consumption.  This study evaluates viable UHS fairways within each basin at the helicopter-view scale.  The following factors are considered: hydrodynamic modification of closure; sealing unit thickness and capacity; a threshold depth that is both as shallow as possible but deep enough to limit microbial hydrogen consumption whilst ensuring a competitive hydrogen mass density.  When these factors are considered together\, the most prospective fairways are revealed that correspond with a subset of known petroleum field closures to proven reservoir intervals. \n\n  \n  \nEvent Details:\nThursday\,  March 21st\, 2024\nLuncheon: 12 pm for a 12:30 pm start \nPlace: Ayer’s House\, 288 North Tce\, Adelaide \nIncludes a 2-course lunch and drinks \nBookings close 1 pm Monday\, 18th March 2024 \nAny late bookings will incur an additional $20 fee. DESCRIPTION:PESA WA invites you to a Perth Basin technical Evening Event Tuesday 21st March.\nL7 / EP 437 – Pushing the (Allanooka) Boundary – how far North is far enough?\nPresented by Mike Collins (NED Triangle Energy) \nThe onshore Perth basin (south of the Allanooka Fault) has been the focus of some significant successful exploration drilling and appraisal since the serendipitous discovery of Waitsia in 2014. Since then\, a whole tranche of further discoveries at Beharra Springs Deep\, West Erregulla\, Lockyer Deep\, South Erregulla\, North Erregulla Deep\, Trigg NW and Tarantula Deep have proven the extent of the Permian Kingia Fm play. \nFollowing Triangle’s acquisition of the Bookara 3D seismic over the L7 and EP 437 permits in 2022 and with the application of the latest interpretative software in relation to reservoir and structural analysis\, Triangle Energy is about to embark on an exciting drilling campaign (north of the Allanooka Fault). \nIt has been over 30 years since any wells have been drilled in the L7 acreage area. Triangle’s upcoming exploration drilling campaign aims to extend the prospective northern boundary of the Permian Kingia Fm gas play whilst at the same time “rediscovering” areas of known oil propspectivity. \nThis talk will take you on the journey to date………….. \nDiversification is the only free lunch.\nPresented by Stuart Nicholls (Strike Energy) \nThis is the notion that holding a broader range of assets can result in better returns without assuming more risk. Once registered with the webinar software you will receive a reminder e-mail 1 hour beforehand. \n  \n  \nCCS Knowledge Transfer Series: Installment 7 \nMonitoring and Verification – What’s Different About CCS? – Charles Jenkins (CSIRO) \nAbstract \n\nMonitoring and verification is one of the most distinctive aspects of CCS\, but it is also one where there can be confusion about the nature and purpose of the activity. Any technical project will have methods for “monitoring and verifying”\, but this mindset can lead to the assumption that M&V is a technology problem. Monitoring methods\, be they geophysical\, geochemical\, or environmental\, are often at the forefront of discussion. In fact\, this distracts attention from the need clearly to identify the purpose of M&V.  Best practice in CCS sees M&V as a component of risk management\, with the challenge being to assess risk correctly and only then assign technologies for its management. This is particularly difficult in the area of environmental monitoring\, where CCS will occur within dynamic and evolving systems where causal chains are notoriously difficult to pin down. In this talk I will explain how to approach M&V as a part of managing the risks of CCS projects\, and suggest a definition of its scope.

DESCRIPTION:PESA NSW Meeting Tuesday April 9\nWe do not have unfortunately have a speaker for our next scheduled meeting on Tuesday\nApril 9th . Rather than cancel our meeting your executive has decided to have a discussion\nabout the content of the recently widely circulated short movie/video Climate The Movie (The\nReal Truth) which can be seen on \nhttps://eds6.mailcamp.nl/url.phpsubid=vew0x395z1j7i14&nstatid=9gj40j711y&info=n9w3d0v&L=17131&F=H \nThe movie is unusual in that it summarises a sceptical view of climate change accepting that\,\nyes\, the earth is warming but not as much as claimed and is a natural result of emerging from\na “mini-ice-age”. The very distinguished speakers also doubt the effect of carbon dioxide in\nthe observed warming and stress that current levels are unusually low compared to past\ngeological ages\, dropping to dangerously low levels during the last Ice age. \nOne of the frustrating things I find is the lack of (readily accessible) basic data to support the\nmany assertions in this and other presentations on the subject. Do the famous Greenland ice\ncores really show temperature rise preceding a rise in atmospheric CO2? Is the level of the\nPacific Ocean really rising? Original references and copies\, if possible\, would be welcome.\nAnyway please come to what I hope will be an interesting and\, I hope\, worthwhile experiment.\nLooking forward to seeing you there.

SUMMARY:PESA SA/NT April Luncheon- Beach Energy’s 2022 Otway Basin drilling campaign
DESCRIPTION:Beach Energy’s 2022 Otway Basin drilling campaign\nJosh Sage\, Beach Energy \n  \nAbstract\n\nFollowing the transformational acquisition of Lattice Energy 2017\, Beach Energy materially increased its footprint in the Otway Basin\, picking up several near shore and offshore tenements\, including two producing offshore gas fields\, Geographe and Thylacine\, as well as several promising exploration targets. \nIn 2022\, to capitalise on the potential of these new assets\, Beach Energy completed the largest exploration and development campaign in the Offshore Otway basin’s history. The successful campaign included one new gas discovery at the Artisan Field and six successful development wells in the Geographe and Thylacine fields. \nAgainst the challenging backdrop of the global COVID-19 pandemic\, and with over 820\,000 continuous operational hours through the pandemic\, the campaign concluded 18 months after commencement with some very notable achievements. These include\, but are certainly not limited to\, the first offshore ERD well drilled by Beach\, the longest horizontal well drilled in the Otway Basin (3.5 km lateral section in Thylacine North 2) and the longest horizontal campaign in the Otway Basin (8.1 km total lateral section from three horizontal wells). \nThis presentation will be a recap of the 2021-2022 Offshore Otway project; the goals\, the execution\, the challenges along the way\, and some of the great & more interesting results. \n\n  \n  \nEvent Details:\nThursday\,  Thursday 18th April 2024\nLuncheon: 12 pm for a 12:30 pm start \nPlace: Ayer’s House\, 288 North Tce\, Adelaide \nIncludes a 2-course lunch and drinks \nBookings close 1 pm Monday\, 15th April 2024 \nAny late bookings will incur an additional $20 fee. Cooper has been a prolific gas basin for over 60 years and the overlying Eromanga basin has been predominantly Oil saturated. Thus gas discoveries in the Eromanga basin are generally termed as “shallow-gas”. The talk will look into various seismic characterisation methods that help in delineating the shallow-gas fields. In the process we will cover some of the structural and the stratigraphical seismic attribute methods that have been useful in field delineation. We will also look into the fluid characterisation methods e.g. AVO and Fluid substitution. Once registered with the webinar software you will receive a reminder e-mail 1 hour beforehand. \n  \n  \nCCS Knowledge Transfer Series: Installment 8 \nGeophysical Monitoring – What’s Different About CCS? – James Gunning (CSIRO) \nAbstract \n\nMonitoring of CO2 movement is a vital part of project execution\, stakeholder engagement\, and social licence to operate in CCUS projects. Monitoring obligations are challenging because the injected fluid is of negligible commercial value compared to hydrocarbons\, whereas O&G operators in commercial fields have always the incentive of 4D monitoring to improve recovery\, in contrast to the generally defensive function of CCUS monitoring. Monitoring programs for CCS are invariably under pressure over costs\, mobilisation expenses\, frequency of acquisition\, and duration of obligations. This context provides incentives for lower cost methods\, and methods that might use permanent sensors to reduce survey costs.\n\nThe laws of physics describing the expected changes in geophysical responses are the same for CO2 and hydrocarbons of course\, but the unusual nature of CO2 at commercial depths makes its behaviour somewhat intermediate between methane and oil. Further\, typical injection scenarios are very unlike hypothetical reverse gas production\, and monitoring is typically focused on thin plumes driven predominantly by gravity forces. These factors make the surveillance of CO2 plumes often somewhat different in character to typical 4D oilfield workflows\, in addition to the expectations of reduced surface footprint and acquisition costs. In this talk I aim to rehearse some of the basic facts controlling the expected effect of CO2 presence on elastic and electromagnetic properties. The resulting effect of these changes on\nremotely detectable signals from controlled or passive sources will be discussed\, with particular attention to seismic\, our benchmark wavelike high-resolution method. I aim to illustrate the main findings  using published results on well-known CCUS projects. In addition\, a short survey of geophysical monitoring efforts using non-seismic methods\, such as diffusive or potential-fields methods using electromagnetic responses or geomechanics\, will further ornament the brief selection of published work.
