DESCRIPTION:D3 Energy is a natural gas and helium developer listed on the Australian Securities Exchange on 13 May 2024. \nIts cornerstone asset is Exploration Right ER315 in South Africa’s Free State Province\, a major onshore permit covering approximately 811 km²\, and situated immediately east of Renergen Limited’s producing Virginia Gas Project. \nInitial drilling across ER315 has delivered world-class helium concentrations exceeding 5%\, confirming the Company’s geological model and establishing the region as a globally significant helium province. \nThis exploration success has since been reinforced by substantial regulatory and technical progress. The Company has completed a maiden reserve certification over part of ER315\, defining 1P reserves of 7.21 BCF and supporting its Production Right Application\, which has now been formally accepted by South Africa’s Petroleum Agency (PASA). \nIn addition to ER315\, D3 holds multiple permits in South Africa\, including ER386\, TCP 273\, ER391\, ER392 and ER393 bringing its total landholding in the region to just under 2000 km². These assets are defined by their low-cost nature and high prospectivity\, making exploration and development economically competitive. \nIn June 2025\, D3 Energy expanded into Australia\, securing PEL 121 and PEL 122 in the Arckaringa Basin\, South Australia. These permits\, covering ~5\,865 km²\, mark a strategic entry into a frontier basin with growing interest in helium and clean hydrogen exploration. Since acquisition\, the Company has also commenced farm-out discussions for the Hydrohelix prospect to support future drilling activity. \nD3 Energy now operates in two geographies\, South Africa and Australia\, with a dual-hemisphere portfolio targeting critical energy and industrial gases. \nIn South Africa\, the Company’s work is vital in a region facing severe energy shortages. Its focus on identifying and developing natural gas reserves supports the country’s transition toward a more reliable and sustainable energy future.

DESCRIPTION:Petroleum Geoscience and the Energy Transition: A Personal Historical Perspective and Predictions for the Future \nAn historical perspective on important advances that Dr Peter Moore has been witness to\, and continuation of the story into the future around the emergence of non-fossil-fuel energy sources and the likely ongoing roles of geoscientists. \nThe petroleum industry was technologically advanced by the mid 1900s\, but a number of developments over the last half century stand out in the areas of seismic\, sequence stratigraphy\, assessment technologies\, deepwater plays\, drilling\, offshore developments\, CSG and shale\, which will be discussed\, including from a personal perspective. These developments have served to maintain the competitiveness of the petroleum industry and have satisfied an increasing demand over time. \nHowever\, a key question for the industry is its future role in the evolving energy transition. Analysis is difficult because there are multiple competing narratives and strong vested interests. \nToday we sit at a pivot point\, with a growing divergence of possible energy futures\, depending on how the world balances economic growth\, energy poverty\, geopolitics\, and great power competition against emissions reduction\, fossil fuel elimination and climate change concerns. \nIn the decade since the Paris agreement and despite significant progress\, the 1.5oC goal is lost and fossil fuel’s contribution to energy consumption remains at 80%. \nWhile both sides (fossil fuel supporters and renewable proponents) argue their case\, the next 15 years at least is becoming clearer – a US/China energy and manufacturing divide\, huge growth of renewables but matched by overall energy growth\, the emergence of nuclear\, and the persistence of petroleum\, especially gas. \nDespite trillions of dollars spent on the energy transition\, we have underestimated the difficulty in speedily transitioning the world’s energy and industrial infrastructure\, and have underestimated global growth\, including overall energy consumption. This can be seen by comparing predictions and model outcomes published over the last decade. \nFor today’s petroleum geoscientists\, technology and jobs will continue to evolve while new areas are likely to include advanced geothermal\, CCS\, and potentially natural hydrogen. As fields decline and new developments and discoveries become smaller\, more effort and technology is required from petroleum companies and individuals to deliver the energy the world still demands.

DESCRIPTION:PESA WA is excited to invite you to our second Core Values Session for 2026 on Friday 26 June at the Perth Core Library:\nHarvey Field Cores\nPresented by Cedric Griffiths (StrataMod Pty Ltd)\n\nThe cores will be used to re-examine the assumptions behind the CSIRO 2011/12 Sedsim forward stratigraphic model of Permian/Early Triassic sediment depositional environment which was run prior to obtaining the Harvey-1 well results. \nPrior to the drilling of Harvey-1 Schlumberger had developed a depositional concept model that assumed most of the sediment being transported westwards from the Darling Scarp in the form of alluvial fans. \nThe Sedsim model had most of the sediment being provided by a large river system from the south\, sourced from Antarctic mountain sources prior to break-up\, with minor input from the eastern fault block after “Tectonic and Stratigraphic History of the Perth Basin\, Norvick\, M.S. DESCRIPTION:PESA QLD June Luncheon\n\nGeological structures and aquifer connectivity in the Great Artesian Basin and underlying Permian-Triassic basins: insights from airborne electromagnetic surveys\, hydrochemistry and environmental tracers at Narrabri\, NSW\nPresented by: Dr Matthias Raiber\n(Principal Research Scientist at CSIRO)\n  \nAbstract: \nIn the Narrabri region\, understanding connectivity between coal seam gas (CSG) reservoirs and overlying aquifers is important for assessing potential groundwater impacts and addressing community concerns\, given that the Gunnedah Basin\, which hosts the coal seams\, underlies key Great Artesian Basin (GAB) units such as the Pilliga Sandstone. \nThis study applies an integrated workflow combining airborne electromagnetics (SkyTEM)\, seismic interpretation\, K/Ar dating of igneous intrusions\, and hydrochemical and environmental tracer datasets (including noble gases and groundwater age tracers). The SkyTEM survey (~2\,765 line km; >60 flight lines) provides high-resolution constraints on subsurface architecture\, enabling mapping of faults\, intrusions\, and key stratigraphic boundaries to ~400 m depth. \nAEM results and K/Ar ages of intrusive activity were integrated with seismic and geological data to develop conceptual hydrogeological models identifying potential connectivity pathways. Hydrochemical and tracer data were then used to test for evidence of hydraulic connection across formations and basins\, allowing structural interpretations to be evaluated against groundwater signatures. \nResults indicate that geological structures are widespread\, but their hydraulic significance and therefore their potential influence on connectivity varies across the study area. \nThe presentation focuses on the Narrabri Gas Project area while also addressing broader GAB connectivity questions. DESCRIPTION:PESA WA invites you to our June Technical Luncheon on Thursday 25 June at The Melbourne Hotel:\n“Petroleum Geoscience and the Energy Transition: A Personal Historical Perspective and Predictions for the Future”\nPresented by Dr Peter Moore (Adjunct Professor at Curtin University)\n\nAn historical perspective on important advances that Dr Peter Moore has been witness to\, and continuation of the story into the future around the emergence of non-fossil-fuel energy sources and the likely ongoing roles of geoscientists. \nThe petroleum industry was technologically advanced by the mid 1900s\, but a number of developments over the last half century stand out in the areas of seismic\, sequence stratigraphy\, assessment technologies\, deepwater plays\, drilling\, offshore developments\, CSG and shale\, which will be discussed\, including from a personal perspective. These developments have served to maintain the competitiveness of the petroleum industry and have satisfied an increasing demand over time. \nHowever\, a key question for the industry is its future role in the evolving energy transition. Analysis is difficult because there are multiple competing narratives and strong vested interests. \nToday we sit at a pivot point\, with a growing divergence of possible energy futures\, depending on how the world balances economic growth\, energy poverty\, geopolitics\, and great power competition against emissions reduction\, fossil fuel elimination and climate change concerns. \nIn the decade since the Paris agreement and despite significant progress\, the 1.5oC goal is lost and fossil fuel’s contribution to energy consumption remains at 80%. \nWhile both sides (fossil fuel supporters and renewable proponents) argue their case\, the next 15 years at least is becoming clearer – a US/China energy and manufacturing divide\, huge growth of renewables but matched by overall energy growth\, the emergence of nuclear\, and the persistence of petroleum\, especially gas. \nDespite trillions of dollars spent on the energy transition\, we have underestimated the difficulty in speedily transitioning the world’s energy and industrial infrastructure\, and have underestimated global growth\, including overall energy consumption. This can be seen by comparing predictions and model outcomes published over the last decade. \nFor today’s petroleum geoscientists\, technology and jobs will continue to evolve while new areas are likely to include advanced geothermal\, CCS\, and potentially natural hydrogen. DESCRIPTION:New opportunities for gas exploration in NSW – acreage available first time in a decade \nOn 29 April 2026 the NSW Minister for Natural Resources announced the release of new areas for exploration in the North West of NSW near the South Australian and Queensland borders. They are inviting companies to apply for the grant of exploration tenements over two specific areas (the Bancannia and Pondie Range Troughs) that have previously been identified as prospective for oil and gas. \nFull details of the contents of the Minister’s Press Release are available on the NSW Ministerial media releases website and published on 29 April 2026. One of the key conditions for applicants will be the areas involved will be subject to requirements any gas produced from the areas covered by these newly released EL’s will be reserved for domestic consumption. \nThis is an exciting development and shows the NSW Government are aware of and are taking positive steps to relieve the coming gas shortage in NSW. Recent television interviews have also shown the Minister willingly talking over the Santos Narrabri Project and its progress through the Regulatory Regime\, so discussions at our June 9 meeting are likely to expand beyond the newly released areas for exploration.

The Branch AGM will also be held before the lunch. \nIntroduction\nNet Zero (aka Net Zero Emissions) is a widely used and abused term in today’s environment conscious world. The term has been grabbed by many professions in our developed society to mean many things\, but all about justifying their actions\, pronouncements and member requirements. Industries have been created based on the simple two words. \nQuoting from Wikipedia:\n“The idea of NET ZERO came out f research in the late 2000s into how the atmosphere\, oceans and carbon cycle were reacting to CO2 emissions. This research found that global warming will significantly slow down only if CO2 emissions are reduced to net zero\, although existing greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere will still contribute to continued warming. Net zero was basic to the goals of the Paris Agreement. This stated that the world must “achieve a balance between anthropogenic emissions by sources and removals by sinks of greenhouse gasses in the second half of this century”. The term “net zero” gained popularity after the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change published its Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5 degrees Celsius (SR15). This report stated that “Reaching and sustaining net zero global anthropogenic (human caused) CO2 emissions and declining net non-CO2 radiative forcing would halt anthropogenic global warming on multi-decadal time scales (high confidence).”\nTodays realities \nIn Australia alone\, there are copious seminar papers\, technical journals\, comprehensive books etc written by members of various technical\, legal\, accounting\, engineering and environmental bodies including scientists\, professors\, barristers\, lawyers\, chartered accountants and of course journalists. So much is self-promoting care has to be taken to recognise bias and the need to ensure the individuals remain in paid employment or keep their consulting roles. This study also incorporates basin-wide structural and isochron maps of the main Triassic sequences\, depth conversion\, and a velocity model that resulted in isopach maps\, establishing the enormous thickness of the Triassic (up to 16 km). Forty wells were backstripped\, and the total and tectonic subsidence were determined. The backstripped thickness at the beginning of the Jurassic was used to evaluate the flexural component of the subsidence (46–73% of the total subsidence). The elastic lithosphere thickness that best fits the data is between 20 and 30 km. Posamentier\nThis presentation will document the seismic stratigraphic and seismic geomorphologic expressions of deep-water deposits of the Bay of Bengal and the Norwegian Sea. They comprise both turbidites as well as mass transport deposits. The turbidite deposits from the Bay of Bengal include leveed channel complexes\, terminal fans\, and overbank sediment waves. With respect to terminal fans\, there are those that terminate basinward of leveed channel systems and are relatively large\, and those that are deposited late within a lowstand cycle of deposition and are confined between the levees of precursor larger channels\, and are relatively small. Intra-basinal channels (i.e.\, channels that start and end on the basin floor) are observed within abandoned meander loops as well as interchannel overbank terrains. These intra-basinal channels are characterized by low sinuosity and likely are mud-filled with no exploration potential.  \nMass transport deposits from the Norwegian Sea include flows\, slumps\, and slides\, as well as isolated outrunner blocks. These deposits are associated with significant substate erosion up to 250m. The outrunner blocks are observed in clusters\, generally in radiating patterns down-system. Some of the outrunner blocks at the termini of erosional furrows are associated with sediment tails orthogonal to the direction of transport\, indicating bottom current direction from southwest to northeast. In addition\, volcanic intrusive deposits will be documented. These intrusives comprise both dikes and sills. DESCRIPTION:Australia is endowed with abundant\, high-quality energy commodity resources\, which provide reliable energy for domestic use and underpin our status as a major global energy provider. \nThese resources make a substantial contribution to the nation’s gross domestic product and export earnings. Geoscience Australia (GA) has a long history of supporting the nation’s energy sector\, delivering independent geoscientific advice and data to underpin informed decision-making regarding Australia’s energy resources across government\, industry\, and the community. \nA key piece of work than informs this function is the annual publication Australia’s Energy Commodity Resources (AECR). To set the scene\, this talk will introduce the recently published AECR2025 publication before presenting an overview of GA’s current energy program. \nUnder the Resourcing Australia’s Prosperity initiative\, GA is focusing on low carbon energy resources that will help Australia achieve net zero. The forward program includes mapping and assessing geological capacity for CO₂ storage (both onshore and offshore)\, identifying potential hydrogen storage sites\, and evaluating natural hydrogen resources. These activities draw on GA’s expertise and existing data to provide new insights and lower investment risk in new resource developments.

This PESA Distinguished Lecture is made possible with the generous support of Santos Ltd. \nOverview:\nNew numerical wave-influenced delta depositional models are challenging long-held rational for interpreting sea level variations recorded by wave-dominated shallow-marine successions. Shallow-marine\, wave-dominated deposits (parasequences) are generally inferred to exhibit a decrease in wave energy and grain size with increasing water depth and to occur in facies belts that are laterally continuous for long distances along strike. Bedding geometry and vertical facies successions within these parasequences are interpreted in relation to a prograding equilibrium shoreface profile (cf. Bruun rule) and a gradual upward-coarsening facies progression (cf. Walther’s law). Sea-level fall is commonly inferred to generate a sharp-based shoreface succession\, characterized by an abrupt vertical transition from heterolithic lower shoreface to sandy upper shoreface deposits across a marine erosion surface. A truncated vertical shoreface succession\, capped by a marine erosion surface\, is inferred to record significant wave ravinement during sea level rise and transgression. \nThree-dimensional\, process-physics-based\, coupled hydrodynamic-morphodynamic wave-influenced delta models suggest that wave-dominated deltas will develop a sandy shoreface inner clinoform dipping from the subaerial delta plain to a relatively flat wave-scoured subaqueous delta top\, which is laterally separated from a muddier delta front outer clinoform that dips from the subaqueous delta top edge to the shelf floor. As these systems prograde\, deposits of these dual-clinoforms will become vertically stacked and will be separated by a regressive surface of marine erosion formed on the subaqueous delta top. Grain-size contrasts between these vertically stacked clinoform deposits reflect differences in sediment-transport directions and sorting under river- and wave-driven littoral currents along the coast\, and cannot be uniquely related to sea-level changes. Gradual vertical facies successions develop where waves are less effective at reworking river-supplied sediment alongshore. In contrast\, sharp-based shoreface deposits record more effective wave separation of sands onto the shoreface clinoform as muds are preferentially transported offshore onto the subaqueous delta clinoform. \nThe continuity of a regressive surface of marine erosion over many tens to hundreds of kilometres across mid-shelf regions of some stratigraphic sequences reflects a gradual lateral shift in the position of littoral current erosion on a subaqueous delta top. Timelines cross such vertical lithic discontinuities throughout the extent of a prograding deposit\, and the regressive surface of marine erosion thus has little chronostratigraphic significance. The model results are used to suggest: 1) Characteristic strongly asymmetric wave-dominated parasequences suggest common river avulsion at the start of transgression\, 2) Observed down-dip transitions from “gradual-based” to “sharp-based” shoreface deposits might record reduced sediment supply to the coast relative to rates of longshore drift as the system expands toward its auto-retreat limit\, rather than transitions from normal to forced regression\, and 3) Regional “top-truncated” shoreface successions might record progradation of dual-clinoform shorelines with wide deviation in net direction of regional sediment supply and shallow-water wave transport\, rather than significant regional transgressive ravinement. The results of these models suggest caution in inferring sea-level changes from the character of vertical facies changes observed in individual well logs and isolated outcrop exposures. Such comparisons fall short of generating precise predictions of the distribution of reservoir heterogeneities that can impact subsurface fluid flow and reservoir development behavior. Heterogeneity patterns within fluvial deposits are emergent structures (i.e.\, in systems analysis\, “emergent structures” are patterns that arise from the collective actions of many individual parts and behaviors and have properties that the parts themselves do not have). In fluvial deposits\, these patterns are formed by shifts in deposition and erosion during river floods\, dynamic changes in grain sorting along a river channel during lateral migration and cutoff within a channel belt\, and the stacking of channel belts as the floodplain aggrades. This course aims to build on traditional fluvial facies models to develop a more dynamic understanding of how a hierarchy of depositional processes defines heterogeneity patterns within fluvial reservoirs. \n• Discuss terminology and concepts to define the hierarchy of processes and deposits that control reservoir-heterogeneity 3D patterns and scaling. \n• Examine process-based\, numerical\, river depositional models to better understand the emergence of heterogeneities within evolving channel belts. \n• Catalogue 3D facies patterns developed within a range of river systems as a template for defining reservoir heterogeneity. \nLectures will introduce the hierarchical organization of fluvial deposits and discuss models for the development of heterogeneities within fluvial channel belts.
