SUMMARY:PESA WA June Technical Lunch: Building a carbon dioxide storage portfolio for the Barrow-Dampier sub-basins through regional screening – an integrated geoscience approach
DESCRIPTION:Hosted with thanks to our Platinum sponsor SLB: \n  \n \nGold Sponsors IKON Science and DUG: \n                                              \n  \nand Silver Sponsors Delft and Qeye: \n              \n\nPESA WA invites you to our technical luncheon on Thursday 27th June.\nBuilding a carbon dioxide storage portfolio for the Barrow-Dampier sub-basins through regional screening – an integrated geoscience approach\nPresented by David Barlass (SLB – Exploration Lead)\n\nAuthors: David Barlass* & Ruth Hamilton (SLB)\, Sabine Mehay & Adeline Parent (SLB Oilfield UK plc)\, Ivan Pei (SLB)\, Oliver Schenk (SLB Oilfield UK plc)\, Merrie-Ellen Gunning (Geoscience Australia)\, Adam Vonk (Chevron Australia) \nSafe geological carbon dioxide storage (GCS) requires rocks with suitable injectivity\, capacity and sealing properties to ensure secure long-term containment of injected CO2.  A regional understanding of the subsurface is essential to determine the potential for GCS of a basin and to select target sites. This is best addressed by integrating the basin’s tectono-stratigraphic evolution\, its gross depositional environment\, and its hydrodynamic\, thermal and stress regimes. \nA basin-scale GCS assessment for the Barrow-Dampier sub-basins was conducted by Geoscience Australia and SLB. The objective of the study is to high-grade geological intervals and sites for potential GCS and to understand potential storage capacity and key risk factors. Stratigraphic and structural mapping of key storage intervals was performed using the reprocessed seismic volume and well database associated with the project. Analysis of critically stressed faults was used to estimate the likelihood of reactivation based on the far-field regional stress field and fault mechanical properties. Pressure\, temperature\, porosity\, permeability\, and water geochemistry data has been screened for >500 wells for assessing the storage unit intervals and predicting the hydrodynamic regime. Calibrated 2D basin models provide information on the regional pressure-temperature regime\, porosity/permeability distribution\, and sealing effectiveness. Potentiometric surface maps for the aquifer systems inform the distribution of CO2 plume migration. Results of this integrated regional basin study are used to quantify the risk of identified storage containers and to map the chance of success for GCS at a regional scale. The project results are to be made publicly available in Mar 2024. \n  \nTicket Prices: \nMember (Early Bird): $69.00 \nConcession Member [Retired\, Graduate or Hardship] (Early Bird): $59.00 \nStudent Member (Early Bird): $39.00 \nNon-Member: $99.00 \nMember (Non-Early Bird): $79.00 \nEarly bird pricing ends Thursday (1 week prior) at 5pm (AWST). All ticket sales close at 5pm Tuesday (2 days prior). \n

SUMMARY:PESA QLD Lunch\, 20 June : Mega-intrusions and Volcanic ruins: A tour of magmatism in the Carnarvon Basin\, WA
DESCRIPTION:This month PESA Queensland welcomes Dr. Michael Curtis to present a technical luncheon looking at the fascinating volcanic history of the Carnarvon Basin and implications for exploration. \nThe Technical Lunch will be held at the Brisbane Hilton Hotel\, in Room 83 (Level 8). \nFor detailed directions\, see explanation below. \nPlease note the Early Bird ticket pricing cut-off times described below. \n\n\n\nPresentation:\nMega-intrusions and Volcanic ruins: A tour of magmatism in the Carnarvon Basin\, WA\n\n\nVenue:\nHilton Hotel Brisbane\, 190 Elizabeth Street\, Brisbane QLD 4000\nRoom 83\, Level 8\n(Detailed directions below)\n\n\nDate & Time:\nThursday\, 20 June 12:15 PM\n\n\n\n  \nPresentation Abstract: \nThe Northern Carnarvon Basin formed as a result of Late Jurassic rifting\, and Early Cretaceous breakup of Greater India from the Australian continent.  Magma was emplaced into the Exmouth Plateau and Exmouth Sub-Basin over an area of ~50\,000 km2.  Until recently the spatial distribution of this igneous system\, and hence its potential impact on regional petroleum systems\, was relatively unknown.  The only references to the magmatic system were 1990s ‘blob’ maps created using 100+ km spaced 2D seismic\, magnetic and gravity data\, and references of penetrations of igneous rocks in well completion reports from ~8 wells and boreholes. \nNew interpretive work (the essence of my PhD)\, utilising SLB & TGS ultra-broadband 3D seismic data covering much of the Exmouth Plateau and Exmouth Subbasin\, reveals the igneous system in all its glory!  In this talk we will tour both its intrusive and extrusive components\, asking why it is the way it is and what its current configuration might have meant for the development of Carnarvon Basin petroleum systems.  We will attempt to answer why some intrusions are of record-breaking proportions (170+ km long)\, while others nearby are much much smaller (3 to 5 km diameter).  We’ll also look at the eroded ruins of volcanoes (that until recently hadn’t been known to exist at all) and consider the original size of the volcanic complex\, and the implications of volcano erosion on regional reservoir quality. \nTime permitting\, we’ll round off with an example or two of how not to drill in igneous affected areas. \n\nTickets for the Technical Luncheon can be purchased below. \nPlease be advised of the early bird cut-off date. \nEarly bird pricing will now remain available up until Monday\, 17 June 12:00 PM  after which\, standard pricing will come into effect. \nTo avoid disappointment please register before that date and time. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPESA Members – $55\nNon-Members – $75\nStudent / Retired Members – $30\n\n\n\n\n\nLate ticket sales up to Wednesday\, 19 June 12:00PM will be available for $95 for all tickets – subject to availability. SUMMARY:GDE Mapping Leading to Play Analysis in the onshore Otway Basin (SA)
DESCRIPTION:GDE Mapping Leading to Play Analysis\nin the onshore Otway Basin (SA)\nChris Cubitt (speaker)  & Paul Strong \nGeological Survey of South Australia\, Department for Energy and Mining \nhttp://www.energymining.sa.gov.au/ \nchris.cubitt@sa.gov.au; paul.strong@sa.gov.au \nThe Otway Basin is a Mesozoic rift basin located in southeastern South Australia and southwestern Victoria\, as well as extending offshore as part of Australia’s Southern Margin. Over 100 petroleum wells have been drilled since the 1890s wells\, and in 1987 Katnook 1 discovered economic gas in the Penola Trough\, with subsequent drilling leading to further discoveries and construction of a processing plant. To date almost 450\,000 barrels oil and 86Bcf of gas have been produced from the basin. \nThe modern Katnook Gas Plant (currently mothballed) has improved the economic viability of small gas discoveries to fuel both local gas markets and electricity generation. The SA Otway Basin is strategically connected to local southeast and statewide natural gas customers by the SEA Gas and SESA pipelines. \nAs part of a larger petroleum systems modelling (PSM) project gross depositional environment (GDE) maps were developed using 7\,965km of interpreted 2D seismic\, interval-specific isopachs with well log motifs\, regional seismic facies analysis and depositional environment (DE) interpretations from 772m of conventional core (23 wells). This mapping interpreted varied depositional systems\, including anoxic\, extensive ice-influenced lacustrine\, lacustrine turbidite\, extensive fluvial/lacustrine\, fluvial/flood plain and growth fault-bound ribbon-like alluvial fan apron environments. GDE maps were produced for the following six key intervals: Casterton Formation\, Lower Sawpit Shale (McEachern)\, Sawpit Sandstone\, Upper Sawpit Shale\, Pretty Hill Sandstone and Laira Formation. \nThe petroleum systems modelling showed for the first time significant oil and gas generation and expulsion in the lightly explored Robe and Tantanoola Troughs\, as well as the Penola Trough. \nPlay analysis has recently been conducted by DEM for all 8 intervals using the GDE mapping and the PSM results\, with the intention of stimulating exploration for hydrocarbons in this region\, including determining areas for a potential acreage release in 2024. The results have been documented on the DEM Energy Resources website under the Geology and Prospectivity \nhttps://www.energymining.sa.gov.au/industry/energy-resources/geology-and-prospectivity/mesozoic-basins/otway-basin  \n  \nEvent Details:\nThursday\,  Thursday 30th May 2024\nLuncheon: 12 pm for a 12:30 pm start \nPlace: Ayer’s House\, 288 North Tce\, Adelaide \nIncludes a 2-course lunch and drinks \nBookings close 1 pm Monday\, 27th May 2024 \nAny late bookings will incur an additional $20 fee. Strictly no walk-ins.

SUMMARY:PESA WA / AGC Geoscience Champions breakfast event
DESCRIPTION:Australian Geoscience Council Champions Breakfast:\nThe Australian Geoscience Council (AGC) is pursuing a Vision to raise the profile of Geoscience to be pre-eminent in Australia and to be recognised as one of the great fields of general science with Physics\, Chemistry and Biology. As part of this Vision\, the AGC has instigated an award for National Geoscience Champions that will be made on behalf of AGC’s eight member organisations who represent over 8 000 geoscientists around Australia. The award is modelled on the concept of a Hall Of Fame for geoscientists who are not otherwise recognised (yet) as National Living Treasures. This honour will be bestowed on very few Geoscientists and will recognise lifetime contributions to our science\, craft and art\, evidenced by technical\, leadership\, mentoring and collegial endeavours. \nAustralian Geoscience Council Inc. – National Geoscience Champions (agc.org.au) \n\nTo celebrate new recipients Peter Moore and Simon Lang becoming National Geoscience Champions\, a PESA WA / AGC Breakfast will be held on 22nd May 7:30am at the Hilton Hotel. \nPeter Moore: \nPeter has been a significant individual contributor to the understanding of the key sedimentary basins of Australia. Of particular note was his early promotion and application of what is now termed petroleum systems analysis to the Gippsland Basin. Although it’s now more than 30 years since this this work was first published\, it still remains a cornerstone study of the basin. \nHe has been involved in several initiatives to promote the Geosciences and Geoscience education in the wider community\, particularly in WA. He is passionate advocate of the importance of Geoscience to the Australian economy and way of life. \nHe has made a matchless contribution to the addition of known petroleum resources both onshore and offshore Australia. His individual contributions have improved the wider understanding of the subsurface and laid solid foundations for the success that followed. As a\ntechnical manager\, he has overseen projects around the world that have had a material impact on the companies he worked for. \nSimon Lang: \nSimon has made an immeasurable contribution to advancing Geoscience in Australia as an academic\, industry geologist or leading field courses for people at all levels of professional development. He willingly explains key geological concepts in terms that can be understood and with a sometimes mischievous sense of humour. He is ready to share his knowledge with anyone who asks and was an important part of the skills development programs at Woodside. He has published extensively and there is always something of importance in his papers. \nHe has made important contributions to the teaching and practice of Geoscience in the international arena\, and he is recognised as a leading Australian subject matter expert in sedimentology and stratigraphy. \nSimon has contributed to the development of Australia’s resources through his unparalleled knowledge of the stratigraphy and sedimentology of the key prospective basins. His ideas and geological models have been influenced successful exploration and appraisal programs\, while his critical review and encouragement of the work of others has had a significant impact. \nSimon will provide a technical talk at the breakfast: \n“The value of geological analogues for surface characterization for the energy transition”  \n  \nTicket Prices: \nAGC and PESA Members  (Early Bird): $50.00 \nNon-Member (Early Bird): $55.00 \nStudent Member : $25.00 \nAGC and PESA Members (Non-Early Bird): $55.00 \nNon-Member: $65.00 \nEarly bird pricing ends Tuesday 30th April at 5pm (AWST). All ticket sales close at 5pm Monday 20th May (2 days prior). \n

SUMMARY:PESA QLD: AGM and Lunch\, 16 May : A maiden contingent resource in Cuba for Melbana: the Amistad-1 success story
DESCRIPTION:This month PESA Queensland welcomes Duncan Lockhart to present a technical luncheon on the exciting progress Melbana Energy have made in Cuba. \nThe Technical Lunch will be held at the Brisbane Hilton Hotel\, in Room 83 (Level 8). \nThe Annual General Meeting (AGM) for the PESA QLD Branch will be hosted prior to the commencement of the Technical Lunch. \nFor detailed directions\, see explanation below. \nPlease note the Early Bird ticket pricing cut-off times described below. \n\n\n\nPresentation:\nMelbana Energy in Cuba – an exploration success in the Caribbean\n\n\nVenue:\nHilton Hotel Brisbane\, 190 Elizabeth Street\, Brisbane QLD 4000\nRoom 83\, Level 8\n(Detailed directions below)\n\n\nDate & Time:\nThursday\, 16 May 12:15 PM\n\n\n\n  \nPresentation Abstract: \nMelbana Energy drilled the Alameda-1 discovery well in onshore Cuba in 2021. By 2022 the discovery was independently certified by McDaniel (A Canadian based Reserves Certifier with extensive experience in Cuba) to contain over 5 billion barrels of oil in place (best estimate) and 267 million barrels of recoverable oil (best estimate). \nIn 2023 Melbana followed up the Alameda-1 well with the successful Amistad-1 appraisal well which was designed to test the uppermost sheet of reservoirs in the Alameda field (Unit 1A\, 1B\, 2 and 3). \n• Unit 1A recovered 11.7° API oil with 3\,783 cP viscosity at surface from a 63 metre MD interval starting from 445 metres MD. Although flow rates at surface were not established 40 barrels of oil flowed unassisted to surface (through a 32/64” choke)\, exceeding expectations. \n• Unit 3 intercepted 200 metres updip and 500 metres to the south of the Alameda-1 intercept and confirmed moveable oil of a similar quality to Unit 1A. Testing indicated the potential to flow at ~750 bopd. The Unit 2 DST did not demonstrate moveable hydrocarbons to surface at the location tested. \n• Unit 1B recovered 19.4° API oil with 5.7 cP viscosity at surface from a 70 metre TVD perforated section – less than 20% of the total Net Pay for Unit 1B (when incorporating fractures). Stabilised unassisted flow rate to surface of 1\,235 bopd measured over 12 hours on a 36/64” choke\, peaking at 1\,903 bopd. \nLogged Net Pay for the entire Amistad Formation has been increased from 109 metres to 346 metres TVD – further increasing to 615 metres when the highly fractured limestones are incorporated (45% of the gross interval). Unit 1B has now been completed for future production\, whilst Units 1A and 3 have been suspended for potential future development and production. \nIn March 2024 McDaniel provided a resource update on the Unit 1B; \n• 46 MMbbls (P50) Contingent Resources – Development Pending in the eastern section of the greater Alameda field in the vicinity of the existing wells. \n• 90 MMbbls (P50) Prospective Resources of assigned in the western part of the field to reflect the uncertainty associated with being away from the existing wells. However\, McDaniels assigned a 70% chance of discovery to the prospective resource reflecting the low- risk nature of this area (given it is updip from the existing discoveries within the field). The risk associated with this area is based on reservoir deliverability. \n• Unit 1A is currently under assessment with McDaniels. \nMelbana is currently drilling Alameda-3\, a well designed to test the deeper Alameda (N) and Marti (I) sheets. These hold even greater potential to flow lighter API than the shallow Amistad field. \nPlanning is currently well advanced to acquire a 400km2 3D seismic survey to cover the field and surrounding areas which demonstrate high prospectivity. \nA preliminary field development plan is being developed for exploitation of Unit1B and an additional two wells focussing purely on production from Unit1B are being planned to be drilled by the end of 2024 with the aim of initiating international oil export from Cuba. \n  \n\nTickets for the Technical Luncheon can be purchased below. \nPlease be advised of the early bird cut-off date. \nEarly bird pricing will remain available up until Tuesday\, 7 May 11:30 PM  after which\, standard pricing will come into effect. \nFinal numbers to venue required by Monday\, 13 May 12:00 PM – To avoid disappointment please register before that date and time. \n  \n\n\n\n\nEarly Bird Ticket Price\nStandard Ticket Price\n\n\n\n\nPESA Members – $55\nNon-Members – $75\nStudent / Retired Members – $30\nPESA Members – $75\nNon-Members – $95\nStudent / Retired Members – $30\n\n\n\n\n  \n\nPESA QLD 2024 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING\nThe Annual General Meeting (AGM) for the PESA QLD Branch will be hosted prior to the commencement of the Technical Lunch. \nMembers are encouraged to attend the AGM to have their say with the PESA QLD committee. \nPESA QLD are always interested to have active involvement from our membership… and what better way than to take up a position on the PESA QLD Committee!  Interested members who are keen to become a committee member are encouraged to lodge a nomination form (see link below).  Any member is invited to nominate for any of the available roles detailed on the Nomination form.  Any questions\, please email qld-secretary@pesa.com.au \nPlease find below the requisite AGM governance documents for distribution to members\, provided at least 21 days ahead of the AGM as required by the PESA Constitution: \nAgenda AGM 2024\nProxy Form\nMinutes of 2023 AGM\nNomination form\n2023 President’s Report \n\nThe venue location can be accessed by two means: \n1) Entry from Queen Street Mall\nTake the lifts to Level 6\, and walk to the guest lifts located in the centre of the main atrium and take the lift to Level 8. SUMMARY:PESA ACT/NSW May Technical Lunch
DESCRIPTION:Joint PESA NSW-ASEG NSW Technical Meeting\nStructure and burial history of the South Nicholson region\nThe South Nicholson Region (SNR)\, spanning the Northern Territory and Queensland\, has long been underexplored\, resulting in substantial gaps in our understanding of its geological past. This study aims to bridge these knowledge gaps by analyzing newly obtained data to reveal the region’s burial history and hydrocarbon potential. Our research presents a detailed sequence of geological events that have defined SNR\, utilizing insights from the newly drilled NDI Carrara1 well and the recent 17GA-SN1 seismic line. We have identified three main source rock intervals within the basin: one in the Paleozoic and two in the Proterozoic. We developed various scenarios to examine hydrocarbon migration within the basin. Our findings indicate that the Proterozoic hydrocarbons are overmature\, whereas the Paleozoic hydrocarbons are still immature. \nAGM Documents\nThe PESA ACT-NSW AGM for 2024 will be held immediately prior to the presentation. \nThe existing executive are all prepared to stand for re-election. \nIf anybody else would like to stand (and they are very welcome to do so) a nomination form is available below. \nPESA NSW Branch Committee Nomination Form 2024 \n2024_PESANSW_Annual_Report \nPESANSWBranch-AGMNotice2024

SUMMARY:PESA QLD Lunch: 18th April – Seismic Characterisation of Shallow Gas in the Cooper-Eromanga Basin
DESCRIPTION:This month’s PESA QLD technical lunch features Satya Mishra from Santos presenting: \n“Seismic Characterisation of Shallow Gas in the Cooper-Eromanga Basin”\nThe Technical Lunch will be held at the Brisbane Hilton Hotel\, in Room 82. \nFor detailed directions\, see explanation below. \n\n\n\nPresentation:\nSeismic Characterisation of Shallow Gas in the Cooper-Eromanga Basin\n\n\nVenue:\nHilton Hotel Brisbane\, 190 Elizabeth Street\, Brisbane QLD 4000\nRoom 82 (NOTE CHANGE FROM USUAL ROOM)\n(Detailed directions below)\n\n\nDate & Time:\nThursday\, 18th April 12:15 PM\n\n\n\n  \nPresentation Abstract: \nSeismic Characterisation of Shallow Gas in the Cooper-Eromanga Basin \nThe talk focuses on shallow-gas in the Cooper-Eromanga basin. Cooper has been a prolific gas basin for over 60 years and the overlying Eromanga basin has been predominantly Oil saturated. Thus gas discoveries in the Eromanga basin are generally termed as “shallow-gas”. The talk will look into various seismic characterisation methods that help in delineating the shallow-gas fields. In the process we will cover some of the structural and the stratigraphical seismic attribute methods that have been useful in field delineation. We will also look into the fluid characterisation methods e.g. AVO and Fluid substitution. We would venture into some in-land canyons in our own backyard and understand the unique play model associated with it. \n  \n\nTickets for the Technical Luncheon can be purchased below: \nTicket sales extended to Wednesday\, 17 April 12:00 PM – To avoid disappointment please register before that date and time. \n\n\n\n\nStandard Ticket Price\n\n\n\n\nPESA Members – $55\nNon-Members – $75\nStudent / Retired Members – $30\n\n\n\n\n\nThe venue location can be accessed by two means: \n1) Entry from Queen Street Mall\nTake the lifts to Level 6\, and walk to the guest lifts located in the centre of the main atrium and take the lift to Level 8. SUMMARY:PESA SA/NT April Luncheon- Beach Energy’s 2022 Otway Basin drilling campaign
DESCRIPTION:Beach Energy’s 2022 Otway Basin drilling campaign\nJosh Sage\, Beach Energy \n  \nAbstract\n\nFollowing the transformational acquisition of Lattice Energy 2017\, Beach Energy materially increased its footprint in the Otway Basin\, picking up several near shore and offshore tenements\, including two producing offshore gas fields\, Geographe and Thylacine\, as well as several promising exploration targets. \nIn 2022\, to capitalise on the potential of these new assets\, Beach Energy completed the largest exploration and development campaign in the Offshore Otway basin’s history. The successful campaign included one new gas discovery at the Artisan Field and six successful development wells in the Geographe and Thylacine fields. \nAgainst the challenging backdrop of the global COVID-19 pandemic\, and with over 820\,000 continuous operational hours through the pandemic\, the campaign concluded 18 months after commencement with some very notable achievements. These include\, but are certainly not limited to\, the first offshore ERD well drilled by Beach\, the longest horizontal well drilled in the Otway Basin (3.5 km lateral section in Thylacine North 2) and the longest horizontal campaign in the Otway Basin (8.1 km total lateral section from three horizontal wells). \nThis presentation will be a recap of the 2021-2022 Offshore Otway project; the goals\, the execution\, the challenges along the way\, and some of the great & more interesting results. \n\n  \n  \nEvent Details:\nThursday\,  Thursday 18th April 2024\nLuncheon: 12 pm for a 12:30 pm start \nPlace: Ayer’s House\, 288 North Tce\, Adelaide \nIncludes a 2-course lunch and drinks \nBookings close 1 pm Monday\, 15th April 2024 \nAny late bookings will incur an additional $20 fee. Strictly no walk-ins.

SUMMARY:PESA WA April Technical Lunch: From Liability to Asset - The Role of Mature Wells in Carbon Capture and Storage and the REX-CO2 well screening tool
DESCRIPTION:Hosted with thanks to our Platinum sponsor SLB: \n  \n \nGold Sponsors IKON Science and DUG: \n       \n  \nand Silver Sponsors Delft and Qeye: \n             \nPESA WA invites you to our technical luncheon on Thursday 18th April.\nFrom Liability to Asset: The Role of Mature Wells in Carbon Capture and Storage and the REX-CO2 well screening tool \nPresented by Siddiq Mahyildin (IKON Science – Technical Sales Geoscientist) \n\nThe UK Continental Shelf (UKCS) boasts significant CO₂ storage potential\, which is important in the context of the UK’s commitment towards Net Zero emissions targets. Since many of the basins in the UKCS are regarded as mature there is now an increasing emphasis towards plug and abandonment rather than further exploration. In this webinar\, we will explore the opportunity that exists to re-purpose near end-of-life wells and fields for use in CO₂ storage operations. Re-use as an alternative to plugging and abandonment could potentially result in significant cost savings. \nIkon Science completed the presented work with BGS for the Re-Using Existing wells for CO₂ storage operations project (REX-CO₂)\, which is an R&D initiative funded through Accelerating CCS Technologies (ACT) programme. The project aims to evaluate potential for re-purposing existing oil and gas wells that penetrate prospective CO₂ storage reservoirs. A screening methodology and software tool has been developed\, and is applied to two UKCS case studies; a depleted gas field and a saline aquifer structure. Determinations of subsurface pore pressure\, fracture pressure and seal capacity are integral to the analysis. The procedure for acquisition of regional data\, determination of production and depletion impacts\, and estimation of seal capacity are considered along with considerations for partial well abandonment. Some challenges for re-use assessments of wells on the UKCS will also be highlighted. Special thanks to John Williams (British Geological Survey). \n  \nTicket Prices: \nMember (Early Bird): $69.00 \nConcession Member [Retired\, Graduate or Hardship] (Early Bird): $59.00 \nStudent Member (Early Bird): $39.00 \nNon-Member: $99.00 \nMember (Non-Early Bird): $79.00 \nEarly bird pricing ends Thursday (1 week prior) at 5pm (AWST). All ticket sales close at 5pm Tuesday (2 days prior). \n

SUMMARY:PESA ACT/NSW April Lunch
DESCRIPTION:PESA NSW Meeting Tuesday April 9\nWe do not have unfortunately have a speaker for our next scheduled meeting on Tuesday\nApril 9th . Rather than cancel our meeting your executive has decided to have a discussion\nabout the content of the recently widely circulated short movie/video Climate The Movie (The\nReal Truth) which can be seen on \nhttps://eds6.mailcamp.nl/url.phpsubid=vew0x395z1j7i14&nstatid=9gj40j711y&info=n9w3d0v&L=17131&F=H \nThe movie is unusual in that it summarises a sceptical view of climate change accepting that\,\nyes\, the earth is warming but not as much as claimed and is a natural result of emerging from\na “mini-ice-age”. The very distinguished speakers also doubt the effect of carbon dioxide in\nthe observed warming and stress that current levels are unusually low compared to past\ngeological ages\, dropping to dangerously low levels during the last Ice age. \nOne of the frustrating things I find is the lack of (readily accessible) basic data to support the\nmany assertions in this and other presentations on the subject. Do the famous Greenland ice\ncores really show temperature rise preceding a rise in atmospheric CO2? Is the level of the\nPacific Ocean really rising? Original references and copies\, if possible\, would be welcome.\nAnyway please come to what I hope will be an interesting and\, I hope\, worthwhile experiment.\nLooking forward to seeing you there.

SUMMARY:PESA SA/NT March Luncheon- Hydrogen Gas Storage Prospects in South Australian Petroleum Basins
DESCRIPTION:Hydrogen Gas Storage Prospects in South Australian Petroleum Basins\nMarch Bunch\,University of Adelaide \n  \nAbstract\n\nSouth Australia hosts two petroleum production basins that are also expected to play a role in Geological Carbon Sequestration (GCS).  Each hosts CO2 disposal operations at differing scales.  Previous studies have demonstrated sealing capacities bounding structural closures to viable reservoir beneath the threshold depth for sustaining supercritical CO2 sufficient to accommodate millions of tonnes of CO2 annually.  Another prospective use for these reservoir systems has emerged: Underground Hydrogen Storage (UHS).  UHS will provide a secure\, scalable way to accommodate excess hydrogen production and fill temporary supply shortfall\, thereby stabilising the price of energy as the transition unfolds.  Hydrogen is a gas under all viable subsurface conditions so is invasive\, mobile and of low mass density.  Sealing capacity to hydrogen gas is approximately equivalent to that of methane meaning closures to natural gas fields should be viable for temporary hydrogen storage.  However\, there are other considerations such as how prone a containment system would be to hydrogen losses by degraded integrity under injection-production stress\, dissolution\, chemical reactions or microbial consumption.  This study evaluates viable UHS fairways within each basin at the helicopter-view scale.  The following factors are considered: hydrodynamic modification of closure; sealing unit thickness and capacity; a threshold depth that is both as shallow as possible but deep enough to limit microbial hydrogen consumption whilst ensuring a competitive hydrogen mass density.  When these factors are considered together\, the most prospective fairways are revealed that correspond with a subset of known petroleum field closures to proven reservoir intervals. \n\n  \n  \nEvent Details:\nThursday\,  March 21st\, 2024\nLuncheon: 12 pm for a 12:30 pm start \nPlace: Ayer’s House\, 288 North Tce\, Adelaide \nIncludes a 2-course lunch and drinks \nBookings close 1 pm Monday\, 18th March 2024 \nAny late bookings will incur an additional $20 fee. SUMMARY:PESA SA/NT February Luncheon- Revisiting the rocks and seismic discovers turbidites and a new exploration play in the Penola Trough\, Otway Basin\, South Australia
DESCRIPTION:Revisiting the rocks and seismic discovers turbidites and a new exploration play in the Penola Trough\, Otway Basin\, South Australia\nSharon Tiainen\, South Australia’s Department for Energy and Mining (DEM)\, and Rob Kirk\, Consultant \n  \nAbstract\n\nThis rock-based and seismic-backed turbidite interpretation provides an alternative to the current alluvial channel/crevasse splay model for reservoir deposition and as such presents a new exploration play. Further the reservoirs immediate lateral association with gas/oil-prone source rocks and seals in the clay-rich lithologies potentially provide for stratigraphic trapping in addition to the previously targeted fault-controlled structural traps. SUMMARY:PESA WA February Technical Lunch: Possible compartmentalisation of the Kidson Sub-basin from new geophysical data\, and regional projects in WA
DESCRIPTION:Hosted with thanks to our Platinum sponsor SLB: \n  \n \nGold Sponsors Katalyst Data Management\, IKON Science and DUG: \n                   \n  \nand Silver Sponsors Applied Geoscience\, Delft and Qeye: \n                     \nPESA WA invites you to our technical luncheon on Thursday 15th February.\nPossible compartmentalisation of the Kidson Sub-basin from new geophysical data\, and regional projects in WA. \nPresented by Alex Zhan (DMIRS: Geological Survey and Resource Strategy Division) \n\nThe Kidson Sub-basin of the southern Canning Basin has long been considered as a relatively simple sag deepening into its depositional axis\, presumably in the central part of the sub-basin. This structural model is based on limited seismic coverage and well intersections near the flanks of the sub-basin\, and is here tentatively revised following integrated mapping with new regional data.  The data integration reveals a possible east-northeast oriented basement ridge with a structural amplitude up to 1000 m in the central part of the Kidson Sub-basin. This ridge possibly divides the Kidson Sub-basin into two distinct parts and potentially is a significant feature with extensive implications for hydrocarbon\, CO2 sequestration\, natural hydrogen\, helium and mineral prospectivities of the sub-basin. Although the basement ridge is supported by regional changes in depositional facies and marginal seismic data\, the existence of such elevated feature remains highly uncertain in the absence of a seismic profile across the ridge. Further work is required to confirm its presence and de-risk exploration efforts. \nEvent Sponsors: \n  \nTicket Prices: \nMember (Early Bird): $69.00 \nConcession Member [Retired\, Graduate or Hardship] (Early Bird): $59.00 \nStudent Member (Early Bird): $39.00 \nNon-Member: $99.00 \nMember (Non-Early Bird): $79.00 \nEarly bird pricing ends Thursday (1 week prior) at 5pm (AWST). SUMMARY:PESA ACT/NSW February Twilight Talk
DESCRIPTION:Onshore Gippsland CSG Potential – Myth or Massive?\nThe onshore Gippsland hydrocarbon province has always been a poor cousin to the prolific offshore discoveries of gas and oil. It has been\, however\, the powerhouse of Victoria driven by the huge open-cut brown coal deposits in the Latrobe Valley. Following conventional gas discoveries in the Strzelecki Group at Trifon\, Gangell and Wombat\, attention turned to the shallower\, but deeper than the mined seams\, Traralgon brown coals as candidates for methane extraction from immature\, wet lignite. \nEarly test drilling was carried out in 2005\, but when Exxon entered the area in 2012\, the press perception of easily extracted gas gained widespread publicity in the national press. This presentation describes the technical history of exploration for brown coal CSG\, compared with the public perception of its potential and with the added complication of Victorian Government reaction and legislation.

SUMMARY:PESA SA/NT CHRISTMAS 2023 PESA LUNCHEON DECEMBER
DESCRIPTION:CHRISTMAS 2023 PESA LUNCHEON DECEMBER\nPresented by: Dave Grybowski\, Consultant\nAbstract – \nIf you missed David’s double-header luncheon talk of October last year comprising Cry Me A River and the world premiere of The Project – A Play About Not Working Together\, here’s your second shot at the Christmas Cracker. This December\, PESA SA/NT is paying David $1\,000\,000 to return with another blockbuster. Before dessert\, David will lead a joint discussion on The Books That Hooked Me – an investigation of the childhood books and collectables that turned his head toward geology. Luncheoneers will be invited to share their experience. How can we turn those young brains we babysit into earth scientists and engineers with great Christmas gifts? Specifically\, the challenge of making engineering remotely interesting to a kid compared to all the neat things geological.\nAfter dessert\, there will be a thrilling slideshow on The Role of Toilet Paper. The Chinese invented toilet paper in the 6th Century after discovering gunpowder was much too powerful and what to do with all those books after inventing printing eight centuries earlier? David will show a great variety of toilet paper dispensers with video of how well they don’t work. Naturally\, there will be a tie-up with Christmas at the end\, and remember\, paper beats rock\, any day. \n  \nEvent Details:\nThursday\, December 14th\, 2023\nLuncheon: 12 pm for a 12:30 pm start \nPlace: Ayer’s House\, 288 North Tce\, Adelaide \nIncludes a 3-course lunch and drinks \nTickets: \nStudent Members – $25 \nMembers – $50 \nNon-members – $100 \n  \nBookings close 1 pm Monday\, December 11th.\nAny late bookings will incur an additional $20 fee. SUMMARY:PESA SA/NT November Technical Luncheon Coorikiana Sandstone Play\, Cooper Basin region
DESCRIPTION:Coorikiana Sandstone Play\, Cooper Basin region\nCarmine Grasso \nSouth Australia’s Department for Energy and Mining (DEM) \n  \nAbstract\n\nPetroleum exploration of the Cooper/Eromanga basin commenced in 1954 with the granting of an exploration licence to Santos\, the dominant focus for operators being gas resources of the deeper Permian reservoirs of the Cooper Basin\, which are overlain by the younger shallower Eromanga Basin. However\, a recent industry focus to specifically target the shallower reservoirs\, viz.\, Coorikiana Sandstone of the Eromanga Basin\, has yielded rewarding outcomes\, thus adding to the Cooper/Eromanga basin reputation as Australia’s most prolific onshore oil and gas basin. \nThe early Cretaceous Coorikiana Sandstone has been proven to be a bona fide exploration\, appraisal and development target in the South Australian sector of the Cooper/Eromanga basin. This presentation of the play is aimed at providing explorers with a better understanding of the geology and potential importance of these regressive marine shoreface sandstone reservoirs. Recent activity in the South Australian portion of the Cooper/Eromanga basin has proven successful via low-cost shallow drilling campaigns\, focusing on delivering additional production rate and reserves for both oil and gas. These positive results in the Coorikiana Sandstone have not only placed the spotlight on this formation as a legitimate hydrocarbon target but it has also increased our knowledge on the importance of understanding the value of shallow hydrocarbon plays in the Eromanga Basin. \n  \n\nEvent Details:\nThursday\,  November 23rd\, 2023\nLuncheon: 12 pm for a 12:30 pm start \nPlace: Ayer’s House\, 288 North Tce\, Adelaide \nIncludes a 2-course lunch and drinks \nBookings close 1 pm Monday\, 20th November\nAny late bookings will incur an additional $20 fee. SUMMARY:PESA ACT/NSW Melbourne Cup Lunch
DESCRIPTION:Melbourne Cup and oil price prediction lunch\nJoin us in watching the race that stops the nation! A Calcutta and raffle will be held followed by a presentation on future oil price trends. See you there! \nMELBOURNE CUP SWEEP AND CALCUTTA PROCESS \nDue to the smaller groups of attendees and in an effort to increase interest in the Calcutta aspects of our price Prediction Day/Melbourne Cup our auctioneer\, Andy Rigg and the team have come up with an amended set of Rules to make the day more competitive and fun. The new rules of the front end of the Calcutta are as follows: \nEvery person registered and attending on the day of the meeting (including speakers) receives an option to purchase a ticket in the PESA Melbourne Cup (Sweep);\nEvery person above then has the choice to either exercise the option and purchase a ticket in the sweep for $40 or sell the option to the highest bidder\, who must then exercise the option (i.e. and pay the $40 to the auction team);\nThe price paid to buy an option goes to the original option holder;\nThe $40 goes to auction team as a pot for the race to the distributed between first\, second and third horses;\nWith 24 horses the pot should be $960;\nThe names of the persons exercising the options will be inserted into a hat and then drawn against horses drawn out of another hat;\n1/ If the number of exercised options is equal to the number of starters in the Melbourne Cup\, then every exercised option will receive a horse in the sweep;\n2/ If the number of exercised options is less than the number of starters\, then all the names of the registered persons attending will go back into the draw for the remaining horses;\n3/ If the number of exercised options is greater than the number of starters\, then not all exercised option owners will receive a horse in the sweep;\nOnce the owners of all the horses in the field are known\, then the call of the card and the normal Calcutta bidding process can begin as usual based on the declared pot. \nBest advice is to bring along some cash (no credit card facilities available in the Adams Room)\, a willingness to have a lot of fun and front up at the Masonic Club (also known as the Castlereagh Boutique Hotel) on Tuesday 7 November 2023 and get together with all your old friends for a great days entertainment.

Although a voluntary system\, the intent is that regulators\, government departments\, and financiers will be able to draw upon the experience of managing petroleum resources to advise on the management of carbon dioxide storage resources. \nThe SRMS is modelled on the Petroleum Resource Management System (PRMS). This was a deliberate choice aimed at making the development of storage resources clearer by drawing parallels with the well-known and well-understood process of maturing petroleum resources. The need to show that injected CO2 can be contained in a geologic formation is the key difference between exploring for CO2 storage resources and exploring for petroleum accumulations. \nAccording to the SRMS\, a CO2 storage resource is defined as the quantity (mass or volume) of CO2 that can be stored in a geologic formation. This storage can be in geologic structures (e.g.\, an anticline) or in regionally extensive dipping geologic formations. The storage mechanisms are geologic (structural and stratigraphic)\, residual\, solubility\, and mineral trapping\, and an inherent consideration in any storage resources is that displaced fluids (e.g.\, brine or hydrocarbons) are managed. \nA significant case study from Santos’ Moomba CCS project in the Cooper Basin is provided to demonstrate incorporation of SRMS in storage resource assessments. The Moomba project is the world’s first commercial CCS project to incorporate the SRMS system and to include the CO2 resource in a company’s annual report.   As more experience is gained through the development of commercial projects such as Moomba\, the SRMS and Guidelines undoubtedly will be updated. \n  \n\nEvent Details:\nThursday\,  October 26th\, 2023\nLuncheon: 12 pm for a 12:30 pm start \nPlace: Ayer’s House\, 288 North Tce\, Adelaide \nIncludes a 2-course lunch and drinks \nBookings close 1 pm Monday\, 23rd August\nAny late bookings will incur an additional $20 fee. The concept of an Enviro-Pad 3D is to provide 3D imaging over a proposed lateral well path faster and cheaper than traditional 3D surface seismic. Recent advances in both source and receiver technology have facilitated higher density surveys with lower operational footprint and lower impact on affected parties. \nAn overview of the design concept\, operational execution\, and initial results will be presented to highlight the multi-faceted benefits the technology brings to the exploitation of unconventional resources and the potential to make seismic commercially and operationally viable where it may not have been otherwise. \n  \n\nTickets for the Technical Luncheon can be purchased below: \nFinal numbers to venue required by Monday\, 16 October 12:00 PM – To avoid disappointment please register before that date and time. SUMMARY:PESA WA October Technical Lunch: Why understanding hydrodynamics is critical in petroleum exploration\, appraisal\, development and production.
DESCRIPTION:Hosted with thanks to our Platinum sponsor SLB \n  \n \nGold Sponsors Katalyst Data Management\, Applied Geoscience\, Delft Inversion\, DUG and IKON Science \n              \n                                                \n \nand Silver Sponsor Qeye \n              \n  \nPESA WA invites you to our technical luncheon on Thursday 17th October\nWhy understanding hydrodynamics is critical in petroleum exploration\, appraisal\, development and production. \nPresented by Robert Seggie & Peter van Ruth \n\nWater flow occurs in ALL sedimentary basins from higher pressured to lower pressure areas.  Flow occurs via permeable beds away from meteoric intake areas or from over-pressured mudstones that are de-watering.  Another source of pressure variation is aquifer depletion due to hydrocarbon production\, or aquifer pressurisation due to fluid injection. To understand fluid flow\, pressure must be expressed as over-pressure variation\, the variation in potential\, equating to over-pressure above hydrostatic gradient or head (the height a water column would rise above MSL in a pipe intersecting the point of measurement).  Variation in fluid potential within the aquifer beneath a hydrocarbon field results in a variation in FWL over a field (tilted or stepped contacts).  This is not evident in most fields due to the small size of fields relative to the small variations in potential which are routinely interpreted as measurement error.  However\, when the variation is higher\nthese tilts or steps can be very significant\, due to: \n\nLarge field areas\nFaults causing baffling\nLower permeabilities\nHigher water flows\nHigh density hydrocarbons where minor variation in potential causes\nsignificant tilting.\n\nIn this talk concepts such as overpressure\, potentiometric maps and sections and compartmentalised reservoirs are discussed.  Examples from all over the world are presented along with the impact on failed exploration wells and sub-optimum development plans.  Vertical variation in potential within fields is also discussed. Finally\, publicly available pressure data from the Perth Basin is reviewed and discussed to consider whether Perth Basin Fields are compartmentalised\, or have complexly stepped contacts. \nEvent Sponsors: \n  \nTicket Prices: \nMember (Early Bird): $69.00 \nConcession Member [Retired\, Graduate or Hardship] (Early Bird): $59.00 \nStudent Member (Early Bird): $39.00 \nNon-Member: $99.00 \nMember (Non-Early Bird): $79.00 \nEarly bird pricing ends Thursday (1 week prior) at 5pm (AWST). All ticket sales close at 5pm Tuesday (2 days prior). \n

SUMMARY:PESA ACT/NSW October Technical Lunch
DESCRIPTION:Seismic in the 60s\nTwo clapped out vessels\nOne drunken skipper\n100 ton of Nitramon \nAn explosive combination!\nPlus Discussion Forum: The future of the PESA NSW Branch\nPlease complete the membership survey by clicking here \nSummary:\nSet in the early days of marine seismic in Australia\, December 1966 to February 1967 \nI spent 3 months as a summer student. It was a 2 boat survey – both clapped out coastal freighters MV Merino and MV Paul Markson. \nAn incident filled trip. \nBallasting the kerosene filled streamer with lead and gaffer tape at midnight on a pitching deck 30ft above the water with no rails whatsoever (OHS was an unknown acronym). Deck awash with kero which rotted all our footwear (and feet). \nSkipper was a drunk\, Party Chief was an idiot. \n8500 foot streamer cut in half by a freighter because the skipper couldn’t signal properly with his Aldis lamp (he could hardly hold it!). \nStreamer sections blown up because the shooting boat couldn’t keep position. \nStreamer sections bitten by sharks. \nSpanish deckhand almost dead from carbon tetrachloride poisoning because he couldn’t tell anyone what was wrong. \nDrunk found down in the hull complete with wine flagon just before we headed to sea. \nHeading back to Portland in a Force 10 gale knowing that the Sedco 135G had slipped its tow and was somewhere out in front of us. \nAnd to cap it all\, we found that 50% of our powder (about 25 tons) would sometimes not explode so it was jettisoned overboard – 1\,000 yellow canisters bobbing off into the Tasman Sea.
