Once registered with the webinar software you will receive a reminder e-mail 1 hour beforehand. \nSubsurface Focused Fluid Flows\nPresented by Dr Tayallen Velayatham  \nAbstract \n\nSubsurface focused fluid flows are occurrences whereby fluids migrate from deeper to shallower depths through a focusing mechanism\, such as overpressure venting or flow driven by buoyancy drive travelling via permeable migration pathways. Evidence of these phenomena primarily manifest on seismic data as fluid pipes/gas chimneys and pockmarks on surfaces. This presentation will review research completed on this topic and demonstrate how studying these occurrences can provide insight into subsurface fluid dynamics and contribute to better assessing petroleum systems elements.

Once registered with the webinar software you will receive a reminder e-mail 1 hour beforehand. \n2024 Exploration Year in Review\nPresented by Sue Slater \nAbstract \n\nPetroleum exploration expenditure increased both offshore and onshore compared to 2023 numbers\, however this does not equate to a commensurate increase in activity. Onshore jurisdictions dominate the exploration and appraisal activities. In total 82 exploration and appraisal wells were drilled in 2024 (spud date after 31 December 2023). Sixty of these were appraisal wells\, and this was dominated by coal seam gas appraisal drilling in Queensland. Despite the release of the Australian Government’s Future Gas Strategy\, there does not appear to be much in the way of tangible actions to increase exploration. All jurisdictions make land available for exploration via competitive tender\, but in 2024 there were no land releases. Seismic activity in offshore jurisdictions is being limited with new Commonwealth awards being granted without the right to acquire new seismic. Carbon sequestration (CCS) activity continued offshore with the grant of eight of the 2023 land release areas occurring in 2024. While Western Australia\, South Australia and the Northern Territory are taking steps to create the framework for CCS exploration\, in Queensland a sudden announcement saw the cessation of all CCS activity in the Great Artesian Basin\, and importantly also the underlying strata. This ban applies to the use of CO2 in enhanced oil recovery as well. South Australia continues to take lead in natural hydrogen exploration.

Once registered with the webinar software you will receive a reminder e-mail 1 hour beforehand. \nNew Insights into Depositional Modelling of the Permian Kingia Sandstone in the Perth Basin Using Ichnology\nPresented by Dr Fiona Burns (Task Fronterra) \nAbstract \n\nHistorically\, sedimentological interpretations of the Kingia Sandstone in the northern Perth Basin have relied heavily upon conventional sedimentary facies analysis of a limited dataset integrating core with well-log data. This paper however provides invaluable insights into the high-resolution depositional modelling of the Kingia Sandstone using sedimentary facies analysis integrated with detailed ichnological studies. Historic cored wells have also been re-evaluated utilising an ichnological approach\, while newly released cored wells have been interpreted\, also using this integrated approach. Cores from a variety of wells including but not limited to West Erreguella-4\, South Erreguella-1\, Mountain Bridge-1\, Corybas-1\, Waitsia-1\, Waitsia-2 and Waitsia-3 have been included in this study. \nThe results allow the subdivision of the Kinga Sandstone into numerous sub-environments reflecting marginal to fully marine  sub-environments. The Kinga sandstone is interpreted to represent deposition in a wave-dominated deltaic system\, with trace-fossil assemblages key to the evaluation of stress levels (e.g. freshwater dilution) in the system. Local sharp-based shoreface packages\, abruptly overlying shelfal deposits\, are interpreted to represent forced regressive events during overall highstand progradation of the Kingia shoreface system.

Once registered with the webinar software you will receive a reminder e-mail 1 hour beforehand. \nKenmore: A Case Study for Static Modelling in a Mature Oil Field\nPresented by Talline Zarzavatjian \nAbstract \n\nThe Kenmore field\, located in the Cooper-Eromanga Basin\, has been producing oil since 1985 and is moving into late field life. At the time of the project several work-over opportunities existed in the field\, with Kenmore-43\, a previously cased and suspended but yet to be completed well\, identified as one of the best candidates to potentially improve field production. Focusing on the Jurassic Basal Birkhead and Hutton intervals\, a geological model was built to capture a range of possible static outcomes\, test each case dynamically and once matched\, forecast the potential production if Kenmore-43 were to be perforated. The modelling work was closely integrated with the simulation results and was continuously refined to obtain the best possible history match. In all cases that achieved a match\, Kenmore-43 was identified as a viable economic opportunity which followed through with a very successful workover. The project highlighted the value of integrated static and dynamic modelling and how this not only improves understanding of the field but also has wider implications for other opportunities both within Kenmore and analogous fields in the basin.

The International Energy Agency has warned that new development of fossil fuels is incompatible with limiting warming to 1.5 Celsius degrees above pre-industrial level\, which was the strongest target that countries signed up to in the 2015 Paris Agreement. \nHowever\, President Donald Trump rejects the evidence for climate change as a “hoax” and has withdrawn the United States from international action on climate change. He is attempting to thwart domestic action and encouraging fossil fuel companies to “drill baby drill”. Should PESA members also pretend that climate change does not exist\, and support President Trump’s goal of American Energy Dominance? Once registered with the webinar software you will receive a reminder e-mail 1 hour beforehand. \nPredicting the Distribution and Connectivity of Fluvial Deposits in the Subsurface Using Scaling Relationships From Present Day River Systems\nPresented by Adrian Hartley (University of Aberdeen) \nAbstract: \n\nPresent day fluvial systems display well established scaling relationships between channel width to depth\, channel belt width to depth and point bar width to channel depth. These relationships are important as they provide a potential mechanism for predicting channel body dimensions from one-dimensional subsurface datasets such as wireline logs or core. Scaling relationships can also aid in reducing uncertainty associated with estimating fluvial channel body width in the rock record\, which\, for a given thickness can vary by between 2 and 5 orders of magnitude.\nLinking present day channel and channel belt dimensions to preserved channel belt sandstone bodies is difficult\, as preserved channel belt stacking patterns are not easily observed in modern day basins. Stacking patterns are related to spatial location in basins and the type of fluvial depositional systems (distributive\, axial or valley). I will show how dimensional data can vary depending on the type of different fluvial depositional systems. Whilst dimensional data from modern day channels and channel belts are not directly transferable to the preserved rock record\, this approach does provide generic relationships that could potentially form the basis for more accurately predicting sandstone body dimensions for subsurface fluid extraction and/or storage.

Once registered with the webinar software you will receive a reminder e-mail 1 hour beforehand. \nHybrid Contourite-Turbidite Systems from the Guyana-Suriname & Cote d’Ivoire-Ghana Deep Water Margins: Impact on Slope Channel Complex Stacking\, Frontal Splay Stacking\, Mass-Wasting\, Stratigraphic Trapping\, and Field Development and Planning\nPresented by Bryan Cronin \nAbstract: \n\nDeep-water slope and proximal basin floor turbidite systems along both the Guyana-Suriname and Cote d’Ivoire-Ghanaian margins have been strongly affected by contour currents since the latest Lower Cretaceous. These contour currents were (and are) usually counter-directional to surface ocean currents and longshore drift patterns that so strongly affect the distribution and movement of sand on the modern and geological pene-contemporaneous shelf areas. The latter longshore vector of sediment transport has thought to be the principal agent for sediment reworking\, sorting by mechanical segregation and movement towards the heads of deep-water systems in both areas\, with the wider shelfal areas contributing more to the reservoir-grade material going through the ‘spin cycle’ that ultimately controls primary fabric when it is resedimented through channels onto the slope and into deeper water. In the northern Gulf of Guinea\, the sediment transport is and was to the east\, whereas offshore Guyana and Suriname it was primarily to the west. \nContour currents\, however\, move in the opposite direction in slope and proximal basin floor settings. These currents impact on the down-slope moving turbidity currents by dislocating the fine suspended load from the flows and depositing them as sediment drifts or enlarged levees or sediment wave fields (or a combination of both) on the western sides of deep-water systems in the northern Gulf of Guinea\, and the eastern parts of deep-water systems on the Guyana-Suriname margin. The impact is profound. Slope channel complexes that are the principal feeder systems to lobe systems outboard on both margins have highly asymmetrical constructional levees in the contour current direction\, and subdued levees in the opposite direction. This impacts on slope channel complex behaviour by showing a steady westward or eastward stacking of the complexes (only one is active at any one time)\, in the direction of the subdued levee. Channel stacking patterns also reflect this asymmetry\, with systematic high-angle lateral offset stack of reservoir channel elements towards the subdued levee. The second impact of the contour current generated asymmetric levee/flanking sediment drift fields is to increase local slope gradients at and near the levee crests\, and this generates lateral channel complex margin collapse into the channel beltways (the highest gradient in the area\, higher than the background slope gradient). It also promotes largescale MTD wasting of the outer levee flanks\, and all slope channel complexes have associated MTDs on the same levee flanks (eastern on the Guyana-Suriname channel complexes for example). \nThe third impact of this channel complex asymmetry because of progressive stacking of channel elements within the beltway\, and progressive stacking of the entire channel complexes in the same direction\, is a mirrored progressive stacking of the outboard lobe complexes\, both on intra slope terraces and on the basin floor. The overall behaviour is completely contour to notions of accommodation space controlling systematic stacking of deep-water channels and lobe complexes. \nExploration\, development and production from a range of prospects and operating fields along both conjugate margins has yielded a fascinating repository of these types of behaviour from mixed turbidite-contourite settings that extend the observations seen on lobe shifting in the Rovuma Basin offshore Mozambique\, and indeed outboard towards the Comoros. Designing line-developed injector-producer wells has necessitated very high angle well design predicated by the channel or lobe element stacking direction to maximise the sand face along hole\, and this has been entirely as a result of the mixed turbidite-contourite influenced behaviour of the slope channel complexes and both intraslope and basin floor lobe complexes. The subsea infrastructure architecture: location of manifolds and the like\, again controlled by the original geology\, needs early alignment to capture the program and reduce cost of facility design and well trajectory complexity.

Generated naturally by geological processes within the Earth\, hydrogen may migrate through the subsurface and accumulate in geological reservoirs. Growing exploration activity\, new drilling programs and evolving regulatory frameworks have attracted increasing interest from the energy\, resources and investment communities. \nThis webinar will provide a general introduction to natural hydrogen and an overview of the current state of this emerging industry.
