Basin-floor fans; from outcrop to seismic – talk and workshop

Wednesday, 24 February, 2021 @ 5:15 pm - 8:00 pm (Australia/Adelaide time)

Free – $30.00

Guest Speaker(s): Rob Kirk

Rob Kirk is a consultant living at Yankalilla. He has 40 odd years of seismic and well interpretation experience and spent some 30 years with SA Oil and Gas, Occidental, BHP and Woodside living in Adelaide, Melbourne, Perth, London, Bogota, Colombia and Bakersfield, California, with the remainder consulting from Tasmania and South Australia. He has worked in around 20 countries in some 40 different basins in many different geological environments.

Rob specializes in seismic stratigraphy and sequence stratigraphy. He runs a 1 week Operational Sequence Stratigraphy course around the world.

Rob Kirk has put together a series of presentations examining the various different components of a stratigraphic sequence in outcrop and in the sub-surface. Each of these talks will be given as part of a mini-workshop. Rob will kick off each session with a presentation looking at outcrop and sub-surface examples, and then attendees can examine and interpret real-world examples from Rob’s collection. Attendees are also strongly encouraged to bring along their own seismic and / or well data for the group to review and discuss.

The first workshop will look at basin-floor fans, and the cost includes a selection of canapes. For simplicity, and because some attendees may be driving home afterwards, alcoholic or soft drinks will be available for purchase from Henry’s Bar but are not included in the price.

Rob and the SA-NT Branch plan to run the follow-up sessions on a regular (monthly?) basis throughout 2021 to look at other aspects of the depositional system, such as basal transgressive sands, incised valleys, deltas and fluvial systems etc.. Attendees at the first session will be asked for their input on the best timing for subsequent workshops e.g. lunchtime sessions, late afternoon sessions (starting at around 3 pm) or after-work sessions.

This series of talks will use the basic geological model in the Download Flyer link below. We will work from youngest (LST bff) to oldest (HST fluvial). If you are not familiar with such a model it would be useful to print this out and bring along
